A moment later, the guild master handed Lucy a wooden pendant engraved with her pseudonym and the guild’s emblem.
An adventurer’s pendant.
It served as an identification card, proving one’s status as an adventurer.
The guild master then explained the adventurer ranking system, stating that there were seven ranks:
Lucy had been given the rank of Apprentice Adventurer, the designation for beginners.
As she examined the pendant, her thoughts drifted to Liriel—the woman she had seen earlier. Her pendant had been platinum, the highest rank, and there were said to be only seven platinum-ranked adventurers in the capital.
Just how powerful was she?
Even when Lucy asked the guild master, he only replied, “She’s amazing.” There was no way to confirm Liriel’s strength at the moment.
Setting aside her curiosity, Lucy put the pendant around her neck and exited the reception room. Her goal was now accomplished—she had officially registered and had asked the guild to search for the player. All that remained was to wait for news.
However, Lucy had no intention of heading back yet.
Since she was already at the Adventurer’s Guild and still had time, she decided to take a look around. She soon found herself in front of the guild’s bulletin board, where various requests were posted:
Seeing these familiar tasks brought back memories of Ragnarok.
‘Now that I’m an adventurer, I might as well take on a request to get some experience.’
With that in mind, Lucy grabbed a request form and brought it to the desk, handing it to the guide.
The same guide from before greeted her warmly. “I heard from the guild master. Are you already looking to take on a request?”
“Yes.”
“Please wait a moment…”
However, as soon as the guide glanced at the request form, her expression stiffened.
Lucy had chosen [Minotaur Subjugation], a high-risk extermination mission. The request required a Silver-rank party at minimum.
For an apprentice adventurer to attempt this alone was suicidal.
Awkwardly, the guide hesitated before explaining, “Um… This request is above your rank. Would you like to choose a different one?”
Lucy frowned. “So, there are rank restrictions.”
She had thought of it as a simple warm-up for the night, but even that was out of reach for an apprentice. Clicking her tongue in disappointment, she sighed.
The guide, growing more suspicious of Lucy’s attitude, pointed toward a separate bulletin board in the corner.
“All beginner-level requests for apprentice adventurers are posted there.”
“Oh?”
“Yes, most of them are simple tasks like finding lost cats or cleaning drains.”
“…??”
Lucy fell silent.
A former Demon Lord, reduced to finding lost cats?
Her pride rebelled against the idea. It was almost comedic.
Yet, there was little she could do. She didn’t have a party, and she lacked the time to recruit one. Just as she was contemplating her options, an old man who had been watching from nearby approached her.
“I heard you’re struggling to find a request,” he said. “How about taking on my escort mission?”
Lucy raised an eyebrow at the sudden proposal.
The old man, hunched over and about her height, seemed suspiciously eager to entrust her with an escort mission. “What kind of escort mission?” she asked cautiously.
“I need to deliver military supplies to a nearby village, but I can’t find someone to escort the carriage.”
Lucy frowned. “Why me?”
It was a reasonable question. Why would someone hire an apprentice-ranked adventurer, who also looked like a child, for a protection job?
The old man narrowed his eyes. “I saw you easily break the wrist of an adventurer earlier. And judging by your attire, you’re a wizard, right?”
“That’s right.”
“A wizard breaking a warrior’s arm? Your rank might be apprentice, but your skills are clearly much higher.”
Lucy was unimpressed. “That’s quite a leap in logic. Why not hire a stronger adventurer?”
The old man gave a sly smile. “I’m short on money. I can’t afford to hire high-ranked adventurers, and then I noticed you.”
In short, he wanted to hire strong talent at a cheap price.
Apprentice adventurers had lower commission fees, and Lucy fit his needs perfectly.
“So, what do you think?” the old man asked. “I’ll pay you the same as a Stone-rank adventurer.”
Lucy considered it. “How long will it take?”
“Four hours one way.”
Four hours.
It was still early, and she could fly back quickly if needed. A night walk sounded like a nice change of pace.
“Alright, I’ll accept.”
The old man formally registered the request at the desk, and soon, Lucy had her first official adventurer request.
Helgen Stables
The old man’s carriage was waiting at the outskirts of the city. A sturdy two-horse carriage.
As Lucy arrived, the old man attached a flag with the guild’s emblem to the carriage.
“What’s that?” she asked.
“A flag issued by the guild when hiring adventurers. Most thieves won’t bother attacking when they see it.”
“I see. Are we leaving right away?”
“Everything is loaded. Please board the cargo compartment.”
Lucy climbed into the covered cargo hold.
Inside, she was greeted by a young girl nestled among the boxes.
“Hello!” the girl said brightly.
Lucy blinked. “Who is she?”
“My granddaughter,” the old man replied. “She’s coming with us, so please look after her.”
The girl had pigtails, freckles, and looked to be around Lucy’s age. Too young for a coachman’s assistant.
“You bring your granddaughter on work trips?”
The old man sighed. “She lost her parents in the war. These days, war orphans are often kidnapped, so I keep her with me.”
“I see… I shouldn’t have asked that.”
“It’s time to go. Please take a seat.”
The old man closed the door, and soon, the carriage began moving.
A bumpy and uncomfortable ride commenced, as she felt it through her butt.
Clack-Clack.
Is it the road that’s rough or is it the bad wheels? She wondered.
The ride was terrible.
Lucy was already missing the asphalt.
She sat in a corner while the girl sat across from her, stealing glances.
When Lucy looked at her, she quickly looked away.
When Lucy looked elsewhere, she glanced at her again.
Realizing the girl wanted to talk, Lucy finally broke the silence.
“Hello? Do you have something to tell me?”
“No, it’s not that… I just find the mask interesting.”
“This is… because it’s a unique custom of our village.”
“Oh is it because you can’t show your face to outsiders?”
“Yes. How old are you again?”
“I’m turning 11 this year. I follow my grandfather around, helping him carry and guard the carriage.”
The girl was timid, and soft-spoken.
Her speech was calm, unusual for her age, and her mood was bright for a child who had lost her parents.
Lucy, who felt some sort of kinship with the child, answered her questions.
In their short conversation, Lucy observed that the girl seemed to be particularly interested in the word ‘adventurer.’
Her eyes lit up as she asked, “You’re an adventurer, right?”
In reality, the girl had always longed for adventure, adventurers of similar age aroused her curiosity.
She seemed to want to hear about Lucy’s adventure stories, but Lucy, being cautious , held back her words.
“I’m still a rookie, so do you have any other questions?”
“Then can you use magic?”
“Of course, I am a magician after all.”
“Then…”
“Do you want to see magic?”
The girl nodded shyly.
It wasn’t a difficult task, Lucy readily accepted.
Should I make a bird to surprise her?
Lucy clasped her hands together and chanted.
As she was about to summon birds out of thin air, a screeching sound was heard.
Heeeek!!
The carriage stopped with the horses neighing loudly.
Lucy felt a bit strange, as their destination was still a long way to go.
Lucy sensed immediate danger. “Don’t go out of the carriage.” she said to the girl.
Feeling the need to step out, She jumped out of the carriage to check what caused it to stop.
