Chapter 29: True Form of the Evil God

After the sub-personality had had enough, the knocking on the door finally stopped.

With Zhang Sen’s intellect, it was easy to guess why the sub-personality hadn’t opened the door sooner.

Footsteps could be heard moving away from the door—gradually, cautiously—until they returned, this time accompanied by the jingle of keys.

A moment later, the sound of a key sliding into the lock.

The sub-personality had too much to say. Even with his mouth sealed, even with the main personality dreaming, he couldn’t help but boast.

“So what if you know we have a death password too? It’s too late,” the sub-personality said to the sleeping main personality in his mind.

He could read Lin Kuo’s thoughts.

The moment Lin Kuo had stood behind Lin Zhi, watching her move the small-leaf red sandalwood, he had figured everything out.

Lin Zhi desperately searched for Lin Kuo’s death password. To her, it was paramount. But if there was one thing more important than finding Lin Kuo’s death password—it was hiding her own.

Lin Zhi represented the power of the evil god.
Zhang Sen represented the mind.
The Black Shadow was the form.
The sub-personality was the five senses.

Together, the four of them could form the prototype of an evil god. But they hadn’t. Something was missing.

The evil god’s main body.

Lin Kuo envisioned a corresponding chart in his mind:

  • Human strength — Evil god’s power — Lin Zhi
  • Human wisdom — Evil god’s mind — Zhang Sen
  • Human five senses — Evil god’s senses — Sub-personality
  • Human shadow — Evil god’s form — Black Shadow
  • Human limbs and body — Evil god’s main body — Small-leaf red sandalwood

Small-leaf red sandalwood: tenacious vitality, long life, evergreen in all seasons.
Doesn’t this match the characteristics of an evil god perfectly?

Tenacity aligned with the evil god’s self-healing.
Longevity matched its near-immortality.
Evergreen in all seasons—the evil god’s omnipresence.

Lin Kuo could now see through the fog.

Lin Zhi didn’t care about the other rewards. She looked down on them.
Her repeated line: “Isn’t it better to die at my hands?”
It wasn’t arrogance—it was truth.

She was no reward.
She was the core.
The main body that housed the evil god’s power.

So why the real world?
The instance could’ve created a virtual setting. Why recreate reality?

Because how could a brother, who raised his little sister, bear to kill her with his own hands?

The instance forced him into a tragedy.

And Lin Kuo knew Lin Zhi’s death password.

Direct sunlight on plants burns their leaves, drains their water, wilts them.
Her death password: burned to death.

But Lin Kuo couldn’t bear to kill her.
So instead, he spent all afternoon sharpening a knife—while Lin Zhi watched.

Then he turned the blade not on her, but on Zhang Sen.

He had his suspicions about Zhang Sen’s death password, too.

Sleep shuts down the brain.
Zhang Sen feared that.

So his death password must be: brain death.

Lin Kuo repeatedly struck Zhang Sen’s head. But Zhang Sen didn’t bleed.
Was he dead? Uncertain.
So Lin Kuo dumped him in the bathtub.

Then there was the Black Shadow.

Its restriction: it couldn’t appear under human gaze.
A hint. Perhaps it feared the meaning of being seen.
Just like Lin Kuo’s own death password.
Being stared at with intent—under scrutiny, exposed.
All darkness shrinks from sunlight.

The Black Shadow’s death password: die upon seeing sunlight.

He had finished with Zhang Sen at 5 p.m.
Sunset was nearing. Dusk loomed.

He chose to rest, to build strength, and tied himself up to prevent interference.
He worried the sub-personality might tip off the Black Shadow in his sleep.

Everything seemed under control.

The sub-personality sneered.
“Zhang Sen only had a brain. Do you think he’d really keep it in his head?”

The lock turned.

Sheng Wen, watching via livestream, prepared to set off fireworks.

Suddenly, the person in the video stirred, looked at him.

“Ah Wen… thank you.”

The main personality awakened.
Lin Kuo opened his eyes.

The sub-personality panicked.

Lin Kuo bit through the knot, freed a hand, and ripped the rope off in swift motions.
He grabbed the knife and slashed at Zhang Sen the moment the door opened.

Zhang Sen screamed, filled with venomous rage.
He tried to curse, but his body turned to black smoke before he could speak.

Lin Kuo rubbed his wrist. “I’m very sensitive to the sound of water,” he muttered.

The sub-personality froze.

In the depths of Lin Kuo’s mind was a sealed memory—one even he had hidden.

Lin Zhi had once fallen into a lake.
A kind stranger performed CPR.
But then turned to Lin Kuo and shook his head in regret.

Lin Zhi had been Lin Kuo’s last remaining family.

Ever since, Lin Kuo had become hyper-aware of water sounds.
So he had filled the bathtub, not only to hide the body but to wake if Zhang Sen stirred.

The sub-personality had missed that.
He could read Lin Kuo’s thoughts, but not what Lin Kuo himself buried.

“I heard everything you said,” Lin Kuo said softly.

Zhang Sen’s brain wasn’t in his head.
It was in his chest.

So his death password—brain death—still held true.

Lin Kuo tossed the knife aside and picked up his phone.

“Ah Wen, I…”

Before he could finish, Sheng Wen smiled faintly.

“Okay. See you later, brother.”

The call ended.

Lin Kuo glanced at the 7-hour call duration and rubbed his face.

He had passed the instance just to repay points… yet his debt only deepened.

But there was no time to worry.

He walked out, then turned back.

In the darkness, the Black Shadow formed again and began to chase him.

Midnight had passed.

Lin Kuo ran into an emergency stairwell.
Behind him, light vanished wherever the Black Shadow stepped.

The sub-personality laughed.
“Even if the sun rises at 6, it’s only midnight. You’ll chase each other for six hours. 60% chance of survival—not bad.”

Lin Kuo ignored him.

He couldn’t head for the night market—too crowded.
Couldn’t go somewhere remote—too empty.

So he ran to a park. A 24-hour lovers’ spot.
Maybe, just maybe, someone would pass by if he needed help.

Luck was on his side.

He ran, paused, ran again.
When dawn broke, he turned around and watched the Black Shadow die in sunlight.

The sub-personality applauded.

Then whispered, “Next is… Zhizhi.”

Lin Kuo sat on a bench, exhausted.

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, he walked home.

“You know,” the sub-personality said, “you don’t have to kill her. Just bind your body again at night. She can’t hurt you. When you miss her, you can always sneak a look. But if you kill her and kill me, you return to the Walled City. You’ll never see her again.”

“Shut up,” Lin Kuo said.

“You just want to see Ah Wen,” the sub-personality pressed.

“She’s my sister,” Lin Kuo corrected. “Not yours.”

“…Is there a difference?”

“There is. Mine is human. Yours is not.

Silence.

Lin Kuo hailed a cab. The sub-personality sighed.

“Goodbye, then, main personality.”

“No see.”

Fifteen minutes later.

He stood before his door.
He unlocked it.

Lin Zhi was crawling frantically on the floor.
Seeing him, she snapped, “Where’s the death password?! I waited all night!”

“It’s in your room.”

She narrowed her eyes. “What trick is this?”

“The most dangerous place is the safest, isn’t it?”

That convinced her.
She scrambled to her room.

Lin Kuo watched, then closed the door behind her.

He moved the small-leaf red sandalwood to the balcony, gathered flammable objects, and lit them.

The green leaves shriveled and blackened. Papa. Papa.

From the room, Lin Zhi’s screams echoed.

“Lin Kuo!”

Black smoke seeped from under the door.

She was gone.

But Lin Kuo didn’t stop.
He threw more into the fire.

The sub-personality’s death password: physical death.

Flames surged.

In the livestream, only Lin Kuo’s outline remained, then even that vanished.

[Holy crap holy crap holy crap]
[He’s burning himself?!]
[I could never do this. He’s insane.]
[This can’t be just a 2-star instance.]

Lin Kuo felt no pain.
Then—

A mechanical voice: Viewer “Like Sweet Wind” has cast the ‘Numb’ item on the streamer. Item grade: 1.

Lin Kuo: …

I might never pay Ah Wen back at this rate.

His soul drifted.

He watched 119 extinguish the fire.
Watched neighbors gossip.

“Poor brother. Raised her alone.”
“Only 22… she’s under 18. Now she’s all alone.”
“Her brother must’ve protected her. She’s unscathed.”

As long as she’s okay…

Suddenly, light surged.

Congratulations. You have passed the instance ‘Death Password.’

10 seconds later:

*[Instance: “Death Password”
Difficulty: ★★
Players: Lin Kuo 2 (survived)
Points: 500 + 500]

The live stream will close in 10 seconds.

[I bet his next instance is in three minutes]
[Scummy streamer is insane and amazing]

Countdown complete. Teleporting…

Lin Kuo opened his eyes.

He was back.

Sheng Sheng’s eyes welled with tears.
“Brother Lin Kuo, you’re back. That’s great.”

He pulled out a bucket of instant noodles.

“Are you hungry? I bought these for you.”

“Not hungry.”

Lin Kuo noticed the bruises, the torn clothes.

“…Were you beaten?”

Sheng Sheng hesitated.

“…I don’t know who he is.”

Then quietly added, “He said he was under S-shen’s protection.”
