Chapter 2: I’m Sorry

On the edge of the valley, on the cliff.

Lin Lan was covered in blood and smoke, his left arm was roughly hung with a blood-stained bandage, and his face was as pale as paper.

Sitting beside the cold boulder, her amber eyes dimmed in a trance as she looked down at her homeland, ravaged by the flames of war…

The once prosperous settlement is now in ruins and scorched earth, and the air is filled with the strong smell of blood and gunpowder.

When the wind blew, a thick and foul smell that made people vomit came towards them, making it difficult to breathe.

More than half of the residents of the Oasis were killed or wounded, and only one in ten soldiers survived.

The brutal defensive battle almost exhausted all their manpower, and they barely managed to kill the group of attackers of unknown origin, making the other side also pay a painful price of all being buried here.

There was a young nurse, still carrying a rifle that had exploded, and she was carefully treating a wound on Lin Lan’s back that was so deep that the bone was visible.

The stinging pain from the wound soaked by the medicine made her body tremble slightly, but she frowned, bit the cloth, and didn’t say a word.

“Sister Lin…water…” The nurse handed over a water bag, her voice choked with sobs.

Lin Lan took a deep breath, his face covered with sweat. He glanced at her but didn’t answer, still looking at the ruins below.

That place was once the place of hope for her and countless others who were forced to wander but longed for life…

At this moment, a personal guard who was once responsible for escorting Mi Li stumbled over from a distance, covered in dust and black ash, with despair and panic on his face.

He knelt down beside Lin Lan with a plop, and bowed his head deeply to the ground:

“Commander-in-Chief! It’s my fault! Miss Mili-Miss Mili-she’s…missed!”

Lin Lan’s body suddenly stiffened.

She slowly turned her head and stared at the guards.

“What… did you say…?” Lin Lan’s voice was low and hoarse, like a peeling rust shell.

“We followed your instructions and sent Miss Mi Li to the designated safe location…”

“But along the way, we encountered… a group of unidentified armed men, who were well-equipped…”

“We fought desperately… and had no choice but to put Miss Mili down at the edge of the neutral zone and hide her…”

“But when we escaped the pursuit and returned to look for it… there was nothing… We searched everywhere in the slums outside…”

The guard burst into tears: “The young lady was taken away by them! Their emblem! They belong to Aisenburg’s people!”

Eisenberg…

Seraphina!

Lin Lan felt a sweet and fishy taste rising up her throat, and her vision went dark.

The blood feud with [Oasis] has not yet been avenged, and the little girl whom she regards as her own sister has fallen into the mouths of another group of evil wolves!

It felt as if all my internal organs were being ripped out alive, then stomped on and crushed…

The promise he made to her in person while holding her hand has now become the most acute irony.

She suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood, which splashed onto the mud in front of her, causing a shocking sight.

“Seraphina—!” Lin Lan clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging deep into his palms, oozing blood.

“Prepare the car! Prepare the car for me!!!”

“Sister Lin…your injury…”

“Don’t mind me!”

The Steel-Shelled Hyenas stopped in a row in the fortress.

Mi Li was almost pushed off the carriage, hitting the uneven stones and groaning in pain.

She stumbled to her feet, but everything in front of her made her feel dizzy.

This place and the slums are two completely different worlds…

It didn’t even resemble any wasteland scene she had imagined.

The towering metal walls rise from the ground like mountains, surrounding the factories and buildings in the center, making them indestructible.

The guards in charcoal-black combat uniforms stood like sculptures, their eyes sharp and the weapons in their hands gleaming coldly in the thin light.

Mi Li was escorted by guards with guns pressed against his shoulders as he passed through a series of heavy gates.

The sound of each door closing was like a meteorite falling, making her ears hurt and completely isolating her from the outside world.

Finally, they came to a magnificent building.

But it is more like a palace rising from the ruins than a building.

It seemed to have been rebuilt from a huge public building from the old days. Its endless outline was filled with the weight of history, and now it was given a solemn military atmosphere…

Mi Li had heard from other refugees in the slums that the White Night Queen of Eisenburg lived in a museum in the ruined city.

Have I met the real person?

Seraphina?

Is it really such a coincidence?

She was taken inside the palace.

The spacious hall has a high dome, and you can vaguely see the remains of wall paintings and artworks from the old civilization period.

The air was filled with a strange smell, including disinfectant, a hint of rust, and the subtle fragrance of burning incense, which made the throat and lungs feel cool.

The guards took her into a room.

Although it is a room, it actually looks more like a suite.

The room had a private bathroom, a bed that looked very soft, and even a small bookshelf with a few books with worn covers neatly stacked on it.

However, the windows were sealed, and there was only a heavy metal door connecting to the outside world.

She understood immediately.

This is not hospitality, but house arrest.

Mi Li was left here by the guards. After they glanced at her again and again, they all retreated.

The heavy door closed silently behind her, but was not locked.

There’s no need to think about it, there must be heavy guards outside the door…

That heavy door, slightly open, was countless times more solid than any locked tin house in the slums.

She knelt on the ground, her thin body still trembling slightly.

The surroundings were so clean and cold that she felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

This carefully crafted “comfort” actually served to intimidate her – she was being kept in captivity.

Mi Li sighed, patted her dirty, rough clothes that were frayed with lint, curled up in the corner of the room, and didn’t dare to sit on the clean bed.

I don’t know what Seraphina, the devil-like woman, wants to do by bringing me here.

Anatomy?

Research?

or……

She doesn’t want to die so miserably!

hateful!

She has only been in this world for less than half a month!

Sister Lin Lan…when will you come to save me…

She still remembered the sight of the Oasis being completely engulfed by artillery fire…

I still remember those tearful yet resolute eyes of Sister Lin Lan when she pushed her into the car…

[Wait for me…Mi Li…]

I’ve finished my business…

We will pick you up as quickly as possible!

Sister Lin Lan’s voice seemed to be right beside my ears, but now…

“I shouldn’t have run around…”

“sorry……”
