Chapter 37: The Girl Who Can’t Stand Fire and Water

During the break, Yuxiu was a little thirsty, so she ran to the school’s convenience store to buy a drink.

‘I should buy one for Youyou too.’

The girl planned happily.

The convenience store was far more bustling than she had imagined.

It took her a while, and it was almost time for class, before Yuxiu finally returned to the classroom holding two freeze pops.

Then, she saw an infuriating scene.

The detestable Zhao Xixia was “bullying” Lin You again.

Tap, tap, tap.

The girl angrily quickened her pace and arrived at Lin You’s desk in a flash.

“Youyou, here’s a freeze pop for you.”

She first gave the snack she had bought to the boy, then immediately shot a fierce, warning glare at Zhao Xixia, telling her not to go too far.

“Thank you, Yuxiu!”

Lin You readily accepted his good friend’s kind gesture. He would repay her next time he had an allowance.

Bang!

Zhao Xixia was annoyed. Whether it was Yuxiu’s provocation or Lin You’s attitude, she was extremely displeased.

When annoyed, one slams the desk. A crisp sound echoed.

“What are you slamming for? Trying to scare someone on purpose?”

Yuxiu already held hostility towards her. A little spark was all it took to light the powder keg.

“What’s wrong with me slamming my own desk? If you don’t like it, then suck it up. Who do you think you are?”

Zhao Xixia was intentionally looking for trouble, so of course she wasn’t going to back down.

And just like that, the two little girls started arguing over a small matter.

“Yuxiu, and Classmate Zhao, could you two please calm down? Don’t argue anymore.”

Lin You was speechless. This wasn’t the first time the two had fought.

In less than a week of school, Yuxiu and Xixia were like cats and dogs, unable to stand the sight of each other. They had argued at least four or five times.

“She’s the one who started it.”

“You’re the one making a fuss.”

The two girls stopped glaring at each other and simultaneously turned their gazes to Lin You, wanting him to be the judge.

“Hey, class is starting, the teacher will be here any second. Everyone, back to your seats.”

Lin You’s head was about to explode. Thankfully, the class bell rang just in time, saving him from a major dilemma.

“Don’t let me see you bullying Youyou.”

Yuxiu tossed out a threatening line before reluctantly returning to her seat.

The usually quiet girl had become increasingly impulsive recently, her emotions closely tied to matters concerning Lin You.

“What a meddlesome person. You should just break off with her.”

Zhao Xixia had been in a good mood, but Yuxiu’s behavior had immediately soured her expression.

“Classmate Zhao, if you hadn’t slammed the desk just now, you two wouldn’t have argued.”

Deep down, Lin You was biased towards Yuxiu, but he didn’t say it in front of both of them. He waited until Yuxiu had gone back before whispering it to his deskmate in private.

“Hmph, so you’re blaming me, are you? That Zhong Yuxiu just can’t stand me. Even if I hadn’t slammed the desk, she would have found some other reason to cause trouble.”

After Yuxiu left, Zhao Xixia’s emotions stabilized a lot. Even when the boy chided her, she just snorted and retorted.

If Yuxiu had been there, the situation would have been different.

“Sigh…”

The boy sighed. He actually felt that Yuxiu was partially responsible too; there was no need to confront Zhao Xixia so directly.

“You’re just taking Zhong Yuxiu’s side. Her expression just now looked like she wanted to slap me. I got angry and slammed the desk, is that not allowed?”

Zhao Xixia continued to argue with the boy, a hint of grievance in her voice.

“Then I’ll apologize to you on her behalf. Yuxiu was only fierce with you because of me.”

Lin You didn’t want to argue anymore and took the initiative to humbly apologize for his good friend.

“That person who shouts at the drop of a hat, and you’re still apologizing for her? Only an idiot like you would play with her.”

The more Zhao Xixia spoke, the angrier she got, so angry that she didn’t even want to eat lunch.

How could she break up this pair of friends?

Watching them talk and chat was super annoying.

“Yuxiu usually… the teacher’s here.”

Lin You had wanted to defend his good friend, but the teacher had already reached the classroom door, so he reminded his deskmate instead.

Class began.

This period was math.

After nearly a week of diligent study, and because the first-grade curriculum was relatively simple, Lin You had basically caught up with his peers and could understand the lessons.

The boy sat up straight, his gaze fixed on the podium. His attitude towards learning was definitely the best in the class.

As his deskmate, Zhao Xixia appeared much more lax, propping her cheek on one hand and yawning from time to time.

Not only was Zhao Xixia inattentive in class, but she also liked to cause trouble.

Her restless foot always crossed the line, bossily pushing Lin You’s foot to the edge.

“Classmate Zhao, you should really listen carefully.”

Lin You was a little distracted by his deskmate and couldn’t help but remind her in a low voice.

“This stuff is so simple. Only an idiot would need to listen carefully.”

Having successfully made Lin You speak up, Zhao Xixia took the opportunity to start slacking off.

Their seats were very close to the front, making it easy for the teacher to spot them. An ordinary student would be on edge, not daring to speak.

But Zhao Xixia’s background was special. As long as she didn’t go too far, the teacher would turn a blind eye.

“Then can your foot be a little quieter?”

Lin You glanced down under the desk. A little foot in a white shoe was fidgeting restlessly.

“My foot is going numb from sitting. What’s wrong with me moving it a little? If you don’t like it, then go tattle to the teacher.”

At first, Zhao Xixia tried to find an excuse, but then she simply acted like a rogue.

“I won’t tattle. Then you can do as you please.”

Lin You was at his wit’s end with his deskmate and could only let her do as she wished.

However, after he mentioned it, Zhao Xixia did restrain herself a little. Her foot was no longer moving around restlessly, but it remained right up against Lin You’s shoe.

The teacher was lecturing at the front. From her perspective, she could see all the students’ little movements.

“The teacher will put two math problems on the blackboard. Are there any students who would like to come up and solve them?”

Every teacher would have students answer questions, and the math teacher did so often.

As soon as her words fell, the slightly noisy classroom immediately quieted down a lot.

Yuxiu was the first to raise her hand.

“Let’s have Classmate Zhong solve the problem on the left. Is there any student willing to come up for the one on the right? It’s okay if you get it wrong, the teacher will show you how to solve it.”

The math teacher decisively called Yuxiu up to the board, then encouraged the other students to be more active.

‘It’s always Yuxiu. She’s so amazing!’

Lin You didn’t raise his hand. He looked at his good friend’s back with admiration.

‘Always showing off. What’s so great about that?’

Zhao Xixia originally had no interest in answering questions, but after seeing Lin You’s little gaze, she immediately changed her mind.

She raised her hand high.

“Then the problem on the right will be for Classmate Zhao…”

As she wished, she was called up to the board by the teacher.

The rectangular blackboard was now occupied by the two girls, one on the left and one on the right.

“Don’t think you’re the only smart one in the class. I’m just too lazy to compete with you. Today, I’ll show you my true strength.”

Zhao Xixia didn’t rush to answer the question. Instead, she provoked Yuxiu, who was not far from her.

“Whether you’re strong or not has nothing to do with me.”

When Lin You wasn’t involved, Zhong Yuxiu’s behavior was very calm, without much competitiveness.
