She came out with her arms crossed. The loose clothing made the girl look even smaller and thinner, her pale little face appearing utterly colorless against the blue fabric.
The following series of tedious procedures made Mili feel both unfamiliar and fearful.
The nurse took her through various tests:
Blood routine, ECG, urine test, chest X-ray…
Each one made her so nervous her palms sweated.
The slight prick when the syringe pierced her vein, the cold chill of the stethoscope pressed against her chest, and the buzzing sounds from medical devices she didn’t understand—all frightened her.
“Don’t be nervous, it’s just a routine check,” the nurse comforted her.
But her voice sounded cold and indifferent.
“Your blood type is quite special,” the doctor drawing blood whispered to Seraphina.
“Is that good or bad?”
“For the surgery, it’s good. Your recovery ability will be stronger.”
“Is that so.”
After a long time, she was finally brought to lie on a stretcher and pushed into a room filled with all kinds of precise instruments.
It was Mili’s first time entering a room with the atmosphere of an operating theater, and her fear reached its peak.
The shadowless lamp emitted a dazzling white light, various medical devices she couldn’t name were arranged around, and monitors on the walls flickered with green data lines…
“Wh-what is this…?” she nervously asked Seraphina.
She definitely didn’t want to be in a place like this.
But after the earlier death threats, she no longer dared to show any defiance toward Seraphina.
The woman noticed her fear, sat beside the bed, and gently stroked her hair:
“This is Eisenberg’s top medical room, my personal facility.”
“It’s just a minimally invasive surgery, to fix some small problems inside your body.”
“I…I have some small problems with my body?” Mili mustered courage to ask, turning her head.
“Some endocrine disorders caused by malnutrition.”
“…”
Seraphina’s tone was gentle, like comforting a frightened little animal: “Don’t be afraid, I’ll be with you.”
The girl felt something was off.
But she didn’t understand much about this and couldn’t argue.
Although still uneasy, she could only nod in agreement.
The operating room door opened. When the lead surgeon came in, Mili could hardly believe her eyes.
Evelyn?!
The silver-armored adjutant who often accompanied the queen had now changed into a standard surgical gown, wearing a mask and gloves, carefully checking the surgical instruments with her assistant.
Her movements were professional and skillful, completely unlike a military commander, but rather like an experienced surgeon…
She’s still a doctor?
What is there that this person can’t do?!
“She… she…”
“Evelyn was an outstanding graduate of the Military Medical University, a versatile talent,” Seraphina noticed Mili’s confusion and briefly explained:
“Besides military command, she is also skilled in medicine, engineering, intelligence analysis—mastering them all.”
“Before becoming my adjutant, she already had six years of surgical experience.”
The girl wanted to say more but hesitated: “So… now…”
“About ten-plus years now.”
“But she looks quite young, doesn’t she? It’s impressive.”
The woman smiled softly.
Evelyn looked up and nodded coldly: “Miss, please rest assured, this is just a very simple surgery.”
To Mili’s surprise—
Not long after, Seraphina also changed into sterile clothing and stood right beside the operating table…
Her silver hair fully covered by the surgical cap, only a pair of heterochromatic eyes visible, letting the girl grasp her hand tightly.
“It will be over soon,” her voice soothing, “With me here, nothing will go wrong.”
Mili’s emotions were complicated.
Conflicting feelings tangled in her heart, leaving her unsure how to face this person in front of her.
The shadowless lamp shone too brightly for the girl to open her eyes. The local anesthetic was injected, causing numbness around the injection site. Within minutes, she lost consciousness.
The surgery proceeded quickly, just as they said, not taking much time.
Mili occasionally felt slight pulling and pressure sensations on her body.
She didn’t even know where exactly the surgery was performed…
The anesthesia blurred her senses, and she didn’t feel any dull pain.
When she woke up again, the bright shadowless lamp had been turned off, and the surgery was long over.
The girl saw Evelyn take off her mask, revealing that cold yet gentle and serene profile.
Even in this environment, Evelyn maintained a kind of ethereal beauty completely different from Seraphina’s, making one want to look twice.
Under the top light, the adjutant’s features looked especially sharp, with an almost masculine heroic beauty between her brows and eyes.
“The surgery was very successful,” Evelyn reported briefly. “The implanted device is working normally, no rejection reaction, no sequelae.”
Implanted?
Mili listened to their conversation drowsily.
But the anesthesia made her too groggy to think deeply.
She only felt a bit sore, not as bad as she had imagined.
But… what exactly did they implant in her body?
After surgery, the girl was pushed to the observation room to rest.
Seraphina sat by the bedside, like a child with a new toy, holding a portable handheld device and studying it with delight.
The device’s screen displayed various pulsating numbers and waveform charts, looking quite complex.
“What is this?” Mili asked weakly, lying in bed and staring at the blinking numbers.
“Your physiological monitoring data,” Seraphina murmured to herself while observing the real-time data, her face beaming with satisfaction, “Everything is clear at a glance… Perfect.”
The girl looked at her focused, joyful expression and tried to relax but couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
“Why… monitor… all this?”
“To take better care of you,” Seraphina lifted her head, smiling beautifully, “Now I can know your physical condition at any time.”
“For example, you’re nervous right now; your heartbeat has sped up, and your blood pressure has risen.”
She pointed at the rapidly flashing red numbers on the screen, as if showing off some impressive discovery.
“…”
“See? Your adrenaline secretion is increasing too,” the woman continued to watch the data changes with interest, “The body is really honest.”
Mili propped herself up, wanting to sit up and look at her wound, but the woman pressed her hand down:
“Don’t move, you just had surgery.”
“I want to see…”
“What’s there to see? The incision is very small and will heal soon,” Seraphina said casually, but her gaze never left the device in her hand.
“Your Majesty, we can leave now,” Evelyn said softly at the door, having finished tidying the surgical instruments and gently knocking to notify.
“Is it time?”
“No need to rest, you can get up once the anesthesia wears off.”
“Phew… alright then.” The woman reluctantly put away the device.
The adjutant roughly tested Mili’s remaining anesthesia effect, and after confirming she could walk normally, quickly left the observation room.
Seraphina pressed down on Mili’s hand, which was trying to lift her clothes to look at the wound: “It’s rare you’re out, want to take a walk with me outside?”
“Mm…”
“Come on, I’ll show you other parts of Eisenberg,” the woman helped the now mobile Mili up and soon left the medical area with her.
“You should get to know your future home.”
