“Hoo-hoo…” A stout snake lay curled beneath the blanket, fast asleep, a tiny snot bubble inflating from her nostril.
Rrrrumble~
Pop!
The snot bubble burst.
Bai Jiujiu opened her small, red-bead eyes, lifting her head with a hint of confusion.
‘Where am I?’
The ceiling was unfamiliar.
She pushed herself up, groggily surveying her surroundings. A thin blanket covered her, and in the nearby stove, the Demon-Binding Rope and Flowing Shadow Sword were bound by several chains, engulfed in a roaring flame that warmed the entire room.
‘Did I return to the inn?’
Under the glow of the fire, Bai Jiujiu’s consciousness cleared slightly, yet an intense ache persisted in her snake head.
The sensation was similar to when she had awakened in Lianlin City a few days prior, though she didn’t feel quite as weak this time.
She shook her snake head, trying to recall her memories from before she fell asleep.
Bai Jiujiu vaguely remembered going to the Drunken Dream Pavilion with Tong Qiu that morning, where they encountered Little Wu, a Great Demon of the Demon Mansion realm.
Then, she had seemingly, with a touch of jealousy, asked… why Tong Qiu kept calling her ‘senior.’
Her fragmented memories returned slightly, but she couldn’t recall anything beyond that point. So, she simply decided to skip over the missing details.
“Ptui, ptui, ptui! What is this in my mouth… huh?” Bai Jiujiu felt something stuck in her throat. She writhed her body, forcefully expelling the piece of fabric that had been lodged there.
It was a familiar piece of clothing.
Embroidered upon it were the characters for ‘Lost in a Dream.’
‘Wasn’t this the poem from Tong Qiu’s clothes?’
Yet, when she flicked her forked tongue, she couldn’t sense Tong Qiu’s aura anywhere in the room.
‘Oh no, what if Little Tong Qiu thinks I’m a perverted monster? If I scare her away and have to go to Qingqiu alone, facing the vicious human world by myself, I’ll definitely end up as snake soup.’
She was a clueless snake, notorious for getting lost around a mountain for an entire year. Forget reaching Qingqiu in ten years; it would be a personal breakthrough for Bai Jiujiu if she didn’t walk in the opposite direction.
Bai Jiujiu was well aware of her own stupidity and terrible sense of direction.
‘Since I can’t find the way anyway, maybe I shouldn’t bother saving that troublesome disciple Su Ling’er. Let that little fox fend for herself. I’ll just head back to Cloudfall Mountain and sleep for a hundred years to avoid disaster.’
The thought barely surfaced in Bai Jiujiu’s mind before she quickly dismissed it after a moment’s consideration. Simultaneously, she mentally tapped a wooden fish.
‘What a sin, what a sin. How could I, as a master, have such a thought?’
And just to be clear, it absolutely wasn’t because Bai Jiujiu didn’t know the way home, while Su Ling’er did.
‘I’m not that utterly unprincipled… am I?’
“Oh, Senior, you’re awake?”
Just as Bai Jiujiu was contemplating finding a new partner on the streets, the inn door opened. Bai Jiujiu immediately sensed a familiar spiritual energy fluctuation through her forked tongue.
Tong Qiu pushed the door open, holding a sharp blade that appeared to be of extraordinary quality.
“Little Tong Qiu! So you didn’t abandon this snake and run off alone!”
A stout white snake leaped from the bed, opening her gaping maw to reveal rows of sharp, terrifying teeth, and lunged towards Tong Qiu, who had just entered.
‘Oh, hell no!’
Tong Qiu flinched in fright. As she instinctively closed the door, she bent to dodge Bai Jiujiu’s vicious snake pounce. Her experience that morning was something she absolutely never wanted to repeat; it had become a complete psychological trauma.
Bai Jiujiu missed, falling heavily to the floor. She turned to look at Tong Qiu, her expression utterly wronged.
“No love left.”
Tong Qiu stood in place, letting out two dry, expressionless laughs. The teeth marks on her thigh were still stinging fiercely!
“By the way, how did we get back to the inn? Weren’t we at the Drunken Dream Pavilion?”
Bai Jiujiu quickly transformed back into her human form, dressed herself, and sat on the edge of the bed. She then pulled two steaming hot buns from her storage ring and stuffed them into her mouth.
It was already late evening outside. If not for the lingering scent of her presence in the room, Bai Jiujiu might have thought she had transmigrated again.
She only remembered the beginning of what happened in between; the entire process had completely vanished from her memory.
Tong Qiu rolled her eyes at Bai Jiujiu with a sidelong glance, giving her a look that clearly said ‘I don’t want to deal with you.’ She then sat down, took out her handkerchief, and began wiping the newly purchased weapon.
“Is that a new weapon? Is it also a magic tool? How much did it cost?”
“I bought it at the black market. It’s barely a sword inscribed with a sharpness enhancement, far from a genuine magic tool. Five hundred silver coins.”
Her previous weapon had been utterly destroyed by the golden-eyed Bai Jiujiu back in Chongxi Town. Combined with the morning’s events, Tong Qiu had promptly added the five hundred silver coins to Bai Jiujiu’s tab.
She planned to settle the accounts with Bai Jiujiu once they returned to Cloudfall Mountain.
“Did the Demon-Binding Rope and Flowing Shadow Sword offend you again?”
“They really like fire. I was just kindly helping them.”
Bai Jiujiu looked at the two magic tools in the stove with a questioning gaze. They seemed to see her as a savior, struggling with even greater intensity, causing the stove fire to sway from side to side.
‘This doesn’t seem like ‘liking’ it at all…’
For the sake of a pleasant partnership, Bai Jiujiu chose to ignore the two magic tools’ cries for help, setting her vision to one-sided suppression.
“How does it compare to the Flowing Shadow Sword and the others?”
“Senior, isn’t that obvious?”
How could a temporary emergency item compare to a genuine magic tool? If magic tools weren’t restricted to sales in places certified by the Seven Great Sects, requiring a citizen’s permit to enter, Tong Qiu would never have resorted to buying such an overpriced, makeshift weapon from the black market.
Thinking this, Tong Qiu, seething internally, stealthily poked Bai Jiujiu’s waist with the sword hilt, muttering to herself.
‘Partnering with you is truly the worst luck imaginable.’
However, the moment she recalled that all this sacrifice was for the gold ingots needed to help the orphanage through its crisis, she felt it was all worth it.
“Stop poking, it tickles.”
“Bad snake, bad snake.”
“How did this snake become a bad snake again?”
“You always were. A bad snake who bullies people when drunk.”
“I accuse you of slander! You’re slandering me! When did I ever drink? This snake would never touch that flammable oolong tea!”
Tong Qiu looked at Bai Jiujiu oddly, unsure whether to laugh or not.
It was her first time witnessing someone who could get drunk just from smelling alcohol.
“What kind of look is that? Did I do anything before I passed out? And why did I pass out anyway?”
“Come on, we’re going to see Little Wu now, to see if she’s willing to take us to Qingqiu by water,” Tong Qiu replied stiffly.
“Don’t change the subject!”
Tong Qiu put away her weapon and used her spiritual energy to unfasten the chains binding the Demon-Binding Rope. The two liberated magic tools swiftly flew to Bai Jiujiu’s side, automatically returning to their proper positions.
Unable to get an answer about whether she had done anything embarrassing during the day, Bai Jiujiu could only purse her lips and sulk inwardly.
Sometimes, this was the annoying thing about Tong Qiu; she always liked to keep things hidden, unlike her five disciples, who never concealed anything from their master.
‘Then again, those five probably hid plenty of bad things from this snake too.’
One human and one demon quickly tidied their belongings. Then, both donned masks, concealing their auras, and headed towards the Drunken Dream Pavilion.
“Hmm?”
Even though it was night, someone should still be on duty at the inn’s counter. Even small towns like Chongxi Town had staff; a large city like Zhuocheng shouldn’t be empty.
Bai Jiujiu and Tong Qiu sensed something was amiss, their eyes sharpening with vigilance. Bai Jiujiu, in particular, with her scarlet vertical pupils visible through the veil, exuded an oppressive aura. Her flicking forked tongue confirmed that only she and Tong Qiu were present in the entire inn.
‘Where were the other guests?’
