“Wife, be careful, the lake water is cold. You’ve just given birth to Soul’er; your body is still weak.”
“I am from the Qingqiu fox demon clan, after all. I’m at least at the Yin God Realm; I won’t freeze so easily.”
‘Where am I?’
Bai Jiujiu opened her eyes once more. Having fallen unconscious numerous times, she was clearly becoming more accustomed to this recurring sequence.
This time, there was no familiar ceiling above her. Instead, she gazed up at a clear blue sky and a pair of chubby, tender little hands?
Bai Jiujiu brought the tiny hands, pale from the cold lake water, before her eyes, scrutinizing them closely.
“Yaya.”
Immediately after, she made a babbling sound and brought the hands to her mouth, chewing on them with gusto.
“Oh yeah.”
It didn’t hurt at all.
It seemed these weren’t her snake-form’s small hands.
Bai Jiujiu, ever the master of self-deception, thus comforted herself.
Just then, a splashing sound of water reached her ears. Bai Jiujiu first felt a jolt, as if the box beneath her had been tugged.
Then, a pair of slender hands embraced Bai Jiujiu’s small body, holding her close to a warm chest.
So, so warm.
It was like stepping from the depths of winter into a sun-drenched spring, soft and comforting, with a faint, delicate fragrance.
“Husband, look! This is also a baby girl! See, she’s even gnawing on her fingers.”
“Wife, quickly put on my clothes. You’ll catch a cold.”
“It’s fine. I’m a demon; my body is naturally robust. But husband, your cultivation is shallow; you should keep your clothes on.”
“No matter how robust, you are still my wife.”
‘Wow, is this the sickening sweetness of marriage?’
‘But are they, a human and a demon, together?’
Bai Jiujiu continued to gnaw on her fingers. Before she knew it, her gnawing had moved from her fingers to her palm, and then, with a single bite, onto her arm.
Her arm, however, was not numb from the cold lake water. Her sharp white teeth bit down without reservation, causing Bai Jiujiu to wail in pain.
“Husband, look, the child is crying! Did she get too cold in the lake water?”
“Yes, let’s quickly take her home.”
“Alright.”
‘No, it’s because a certain silly little snake bit herself until she cried.’
It was fortunate that Bai Jiujiu’s true form carried no venom; otherwise, the little snake might have poisoned herself to death on Cloudfall Mountain.
Despite her internal monologue, Bai Jiujiu still wanted to understand what had truly transpired. Wasn’t she just confronting Scarlet Soul in an inn? How had she suddenly shrunk and become an abandoned human infant?
‘Could it be that the little snake was already killed by Scarlet Soul?’
‘Is this the third rebirth?’
‘No way!!!!’
“What have you done to Senior? You monster!”
“Heh, we are both demons, yet you favor one demon over another? According to the memories I’ve absorbed, isn’t this snake demon also a wanted criminal on your Demon Suppression Bureau’s bounty list?”
Perhaps feeling certain of victory, or having achieved her set objective, Scarlet Soul did not immediately deliver a killing blow to Tong Qiu.
Instead, she looked at Tong Qiu with considerable interest.
‘So similar.’
‘Truly so similar.’
“Senior is different from you. She has never harmed any innocent person.”
“Have you seen it with your own eyes?”
“Ah!”
“Have you personally witnessed Bai Jiujiu not harming humans? You’ve only known each other for about ten days. If she were hiding something, do you truly believe a mere Core Formation Realm cultivator like you would know?”
“Ultimately, you are but a twenty-year-old cultivator, while Bai Jiujiu is a demon who has lived for eight thousand years. Do you honestly believe trust can exist between humans and demons?”
Scarlet Soul clearly articulated the past between Bai Jiujiu and Tong Qiu.
‘How could she know?’ Tong Qiu’s face registered utter surprise.
“Why would I know? Hahahaha, you’re a constable, haven’t you seen the bounty warrant you issued for me?”
‘The bounty warrant!’
Tong Qiu used her uninjured arm to support herself against the wall, suppressing the wound on her left arm with spiritual energy to stop the gushing blood. She struggled to stand up, inch by agonizing inch, her mind racing.
‘Could it be that Scarlet Soul saw our memories?’
‘But when?’
‘When did she say she saw our memories?’
Thud…
Scarlet Soul instantly appeared beside Tong Qiu, gently prying her hand from the wall and then releasing it.
Losing her support, Tong Qiu, who had only just managed to stand, once again tumbled to the ground with a splash.
Her left arm struck the floor, tearing open the wound even further. The blood, which had just been suppressed by spiritual energy, began to flow out again, causing Tong Qiu to shriek in pain.
“Ah!!!!”
“If this were two hundred years ago, I might have admired you. Unfortunately, it is not now. Hmph, now die!”
But Scarlet Soul had lost all interest in lecturing Tong Qiu further. She sneered mercilessly, her sharp claws poised to pierce Tong Qiu’s body.
Tong Qiu was utterly incapable of resisting. Her hand, barely raised, was pinned under Scarlet Soul’s foot. The pervasive pain prevented her from even gathering spiritual energy to cast a spell; the disparity in their strength was simply too vast.
Boom!
Scarlet Soul wasted no words, raising her half-beast claw and striking down.
The floor was pierced by Scarlet Soul’s immense power, followed by a powerful impact that blasted a large hole through it.
Scarlet Soul remained expressionless, turning to look behind her. As expected, the unconscious snake that should have been lying there was gone, leaving only a puddle of water.
Even the magical artifacts had vanished.
‘Did someone come to rescue them?’
Scarlet Soul lowered her head, her demonic energy beginning to surge restlessly. She opened her mouth slightly, laughing wildly throughout the inn.
“Hahahaha, this is the first time, besides Bai Jiu’er, that someone has dared to snatch my prey right before my eyes!” She stopped laughing, a smile playing on her lips, revealing her fangs, as her eyes turned malevolent toward the doorway.
Her blue, burning pupils flickered. The events that had just transpired suddenly appeared before her in a phantom-like flash.
She had seen Little Wu stealthily approach, use a piece of cloth to sweep over Tong Qiu’s face, wrapping her within it. Then, she quickly moved to Bai Jiujiu, enveloping her in the cloth as well, and likewise with the surrounding magical artifacts.
Finally, carrying everything, she swiftly exited through the main door.
“But it’s a pity, in this space, you won’t escape!”
“Daddy, Mommy! You’re back!”
“Soul’er, guess who Mommy brought for you?”
“Wow, this is, this is!”
“Haven’t you always wanted a little sister? Mommy brought you a sister!”
“Yay!”
“Wife, you take the children inside to warm up. I’ll go make some rice porridge for the baby; she must be starving after drifting on the lake for so long.”
“Alright. There’s plenty of rice left in the jar. You can also add the sweet potatoes I dug from the mountain today; that will make it more filling. Oh, don’t forget to bring some for Soul’er too!”
“Got it!”
Bai Jiujiu blinked her large eyes, taking in her surroundings: a slightly dilapidated small wooden cabin. It was clearly self-built, with craftsmanship far superior to Bai Jiujiu’s own attempts on Cloudfall Mountain.
‘So, was I pulled into a Dreamfall by Long Zhi?’
Bai Jiujiu recalled Long Zhi’s final words, realizing she hadn’t transmigrated three times, but rather been drawn into a Dreamfall by Long Zhi.
Although she didn’t understand what Dreamfall truly was, being in this tiny infant’s body felt incredibly uncomfortable!
Her arms and legs were short; she couldn’t even stand up!
Bai Jiujiu then used the light from the hearth to get a clear look at the woman who was holding her.
Her face was gentle, possessing a beauty that made it impossible to dislike her. Her red hair, braided and draped over one shoulder, framed soft, pale yellow eyes that looked down at Bai Jiujiu.
‘This appearance, it feels so familiar…’
A pair of fox ears topped her head, while a large, fluffy fox tail was wrapped around her body, serving to warm Bai Jiujiu.
So warm.
Bai Jiujiu’s gaze flickered away from the woman; she wasn’t particularly fond of this ‘mature woman’ type.
‘Wait, that wine gourd?’
Bai Jiujiu turned her head, spotting a familiar wine gourd hanging above the fireplace. A rhomboid red gem was embedded in the gourd.
‘Isn’t that Bai Jiu’er’s gourd?’
The woman noticed Bai Jiujiu’s eyes fixed on the wine gourd hanging by the hearth. The infant’s tiny hands reached out towards the small gourd, occasionally letting out a babbling sound.
Believing Bai Jiujiu liked the wine gourd, she took it down and handed it to her.
It truly was Bai Jiu’er’s wine gourd. ‘Why would it be here?’
“Mommy, Mommy, does little sister have a name?”
“A name, you ask? Mommy hasn’t chosen one yet. How about we wait for your daddy to come back? He was a top scholar; his knowledge is definitely richer than Mommy’s.”
“Mommy, can I name little sister?”
“Uh, of course you can! But it depends on whether little sister likes the name.”
“Yay!”
The little girl who wanted to name Bai Jiujiu bounced three feet high, then eagerly flopped down in front of her.
At this moment, Bai Jiujiu was examining the wine gourd in her hands, confirming it was indeed Bai Jiu’er’s. Yet, deep in her heart, she was utterly confused: ‘Why was her wine gourd here?’
“Mommy, look, little sister loves wine just like Daddy.”
“How about we name little sister…”
“Bai Jiu’er.”
