Chapter 19: Lunch, Liana, and the Plan

“Then please come again at lunchtime,” Aisha slowly stood up. “I’ll gather everyone for you, and you can announce your plan.”

Aisha had never opposed Landon’s plan from the start. Whether it was finding people to repair the road or returning to the town to explore, both were normal choices.

Whether they were correct or not, these two choices could indeed relieve the current pressure.

Whispering Town’s isolation largely came from the break in its only road, a fissure nearly a hundred meters deep. No human effort could cross it.

The northern part of the Western Ring City-State was already high in elevation. Once the road broke, there was no way around it.

So repairing the road was only a matter of time. If there was a road that could barely transport the wounded down, it would reduce a considerable number of problems.

As for going back to Whispering Town to gather supplies, they could only hope that some supplies might have been preserved intact.

“Lunch?”

Landon remembered she had just said one meal a day. He hadn’t expected there could still be lunch.

“Ah, the wolf you brought back yesterday was quite fat… How should I put it? We barely managed to divide it into three meals.”

Aisha scratched her cheek, looking a little embarrassed.

She actually couldn’t quite accept splitting meat, bones, and organs into three meals, but in special times, everyone was satisfied just to smell a bit of meat.

A wolf didn’t have much meat on it. The kitchen cook had strained every effort to break it down, completing this “great feat.”

“You guys really are something!”

Landon was genuinely impressed.

“Then let’s leave it at that for now. I should go back…”

“Uh, wait… Please wait a moment…”

Landon hesitated again and again, but in the end he called out to stop her. Actually, ever since he first met Aisha, he had wanted to ask.

“What is it?”

Aisha turned back to look at Landon.

Seeing Landon’s slightly awkward expression, Aisha seemed to understand something at once. She thought for a moment, then sat back down on the bench.

“Oh… Is it about Liana?”

Aisha tapped her index finger lightly against her lips, thought briefly, and immediately added:

“Liana’s physical condition is very bad.”

“Specifically?”

“You might not have seen it, but she has a large scar on her back. Her legs are paralyzed from heavy pressure, and finally, the psychological trauma is probably severe.”

After all, she was a nurse. She still knew basic medical knowledge, though by the time she met Liana, it was already too late. Treatment wasn’t even possible.

“Do you know what happened to her?”

It would be a lie to say Landon wasn’t curious. As for whether he could or should know, he could only take it one step at a time.

“But I’m sorry. To be honest, I’m not particularly clear about what happened to Liana either.”

Aisha let out a long breath.

“I haven’t known Liana for very long, but I know she was originally a cheerful girl. At least in Whispering Town, I’ve never seen anyone more striking than her.”

Aisha tapped her cheek lightly, as if trying to leaf through her memories.

“At the time, I only knew her as the amiable mayor’s daughter. She should have lived a beautiful, happy life. But during the earthquake, she and quite a few others were trapped together…”

Hearing this, Landon suddenly drew a sharp breath. His back felt cold, and his breathing almost stopped.

Among those people should be the one Hunter Lancaster said was killed by Liana. As for who that person was, Landon didn’t know.

But Aisha’s next words somewhat exceeded his expectations…

“I remember it was thirty-six people. Three weeks after the earthquake, they miraculously survived from under that ruin.”

“They all say Liana saved everyone, but Liana was severely injured. I don’t know much about it. I only know that group still refuses to talk about it.”

Aisha always found it strange when she recalled what happened five months ago. Something had clearly happened to that group. Every one of them kept silent, unwilling to explain.

As one of the survivors, Acting Director Hunter Lancaster clearly knew something, but he wouldn’t say either.

So Aisha didn’t know much about it.

“I only know that I was responsible for pulling Liana back from the gates of hell. To be honest, I originally thought she wouldn’t survive. It was too severe. Yet after two months of recuperation, she woke up!”

Aisha found the experience absurd whenever she thought about it. A person left with only faint breathing, how could anyone survive in such harsh conditions?

Not to mention that the medical supplies in the church at the time could not possibly save a dying person.

But Liana survived.

“As for the rest, Liana doesn’t want to talk about it. Since she woke up, she seems to have developed post-traumatic stress. Seeing everyone in town makes her physically uncomfortable.”

Aisha said softly. Just then, the back door opened, and a nun came to find Aisha. After the two exchanged a few words, Aisha had to stand up.

“I’ll go first. When it’s about lunchtime, please come to the chapel again.”

As a nurse, Aisha was probably the backbone of this group of nuns. They chose to wear nun’s robes, perhaps not because they had joined the Goddess Church, but because they had no other clothes.

After all, the church only had nun’s robes.

After watching Aisha leave, Landon also prepared to return to his room. Helentine was still absent, so he packed his things, stuffing various weapons and equipment into his tactical bag.

What he was about to do was not something that could be spread around.

At noon, he came to the church fully armed. Facing the one hundred and thirty-two townspeople who had been gathered, he stood on the platform that might originally have been used to lead prayers.

“I am Landon, a child who grew up in the church orphanage. Everyone should know me. I am a city hero, the twenty-first captain of the guard. Now I’m back.”

Landon’s voice was still loud and clear, just as resolute as when he had left Whispering Town.

The crowd below all turned their eyes to him. Those who knew Landon began to whisper. They seemed surprised that Landon had returned here.

Some were also quite curious about Landon’s presence, because someone had been very generous to them.

But just as Landon stood up, Helentine actually appeared quietly.

So Landon could only take the opportunity to make an introduction:

“This is my respected teacher, the Empire’s Great Mage, Lady Helentine. The teleportation array in the center of the Western Ring City-State came from her hands.”

The townspeople had basically never encountered magic, but if you mentioned the teleportation array of the Western Ring City-State, they had more or less heard of it, or even seen it from afar.

“The Reconstruction Team will not come. You should all be clear about that after the past half year. So we must save ourselves.”

Landon knew the Reconstruction Team’s plans all too well. Before the severely damaged Western Ring City-State could be rebuilt to a self-sufficient state, it was impossible for them to come help Whispering Town.

True, they could use magic to directly transport the people here out, but Helentine didn’t want to do it, because she didn’t care.

To be honest, although Helentine was very good to him, she had no emotional attachment to Whispering Town. If she didn’t want to help, no one could force her.

So Landon didn’t overstep by trying to control his master. He only asked her to help.

She agreed.

“Starting tomorrow, Lady Helentine will use magic to provide clean water and repair the road to the Western Ring City-State…”

“I will travel back and forth between the mountains, the forest, and the town. I will clear out heretics, hunt, and search for the town’s supplies and the remains of our people.”

Landon wasn’t just drawing a pie in the sky. He truly intended to do this.

“So if anyone has ideas and wants to contribute, you can come find me anytime, regardless of gender or age.”
