Join the ServerAfter the embrace, Gu Qingnan did not indulge in that moment of emotion, quickly returning the little rabbit to Wei Yeban.
His attention no longer lingered on the gravestone, shifting instead toward Wei Yeban.
“Does baby still remember Grandpa and Grandma…?”
Holding the little rabbit in one hand and the plush beast in the other, Wei Yeban’s expression softened somewhat.
Today was overcast, and being up on a mountain in the suburbs, the temperature was unusually pleasant.
Following the tension, Wei Yeban soon grew drowsy.
He usually had the habit of taking an afternoon nap.
Gu Qingnan had originally intended for him to sleep in the car on the way over, which would have made things much easier, but the boy had remained tense throughout the ride and had not slept.
Gu Qingnan did not stop him, watching his head nod rhythmically for a while before he finally dozed off against the little plush beast.
Waiting a bit longer to make sure he was sound asleep, Gu Qingnan quickly packed their things, wanting to head home while he was still sleeping.
A few minutes later, laden with bags and carrying Wei Yeban, he walked down the mountain.
Down in the parking lot, Shen Qing had been keeping an eye out, immediately getting out of the car when she saw Gu Qingnan’s movements.
Gu Qingnan had not walked far before she came up to meet him.
“How did it go?”
“Pretty well.”
Gu Qingnan recounted the incident with the little rabbit.
Shen Qing had been caring for Wei Yeban for some time now, and hearing this, she was visibly delighted.
“That’s a good sign; it shows he really does take in what you say, so you can talk to him more often…”
“Mm.”
After handing the luggage to Shen Qing, Gu Qingnan carefully tightened his embrace around Wei Yeban, who was resting against his chest.
This was his baby.
His only and most precious treasure in this world.
Shen Qing went ahead to clear the back seat, and once Gu Qingnan arrived, he placed Wei Yeban directly onto it.
Wei Yeban disliked prolonged physical contact, and the spacious back seat was more comfortable for sleeping.
Shen Qing took the wheel again on the way back.
By the time they reached home, Wei Yeban had just woken up.
With one cheek flushed from sleep, messy hair, and that dazed, just-awakened look, Gu Qingnan felt his heart melt completely.
It was already dinnertime when they arrived home.
Shen Qing hurried to prepare food for Wei Yeban.
Gu Qingnan turned to the new helper.
“Is Wei Nianxi home?”
“Mr. Wei has not returned yet.”
A little later, after Gu Qingnan finished his dinner, he went to feed Wei Yeban.
Likely famished from the day’s outing, Wei Yeban ate quite eagerly this time.
However, having napped later than usual in the afternoon, Wei Yeban also fell asleep later than usual that night.
Even when Gu Qingnan went to sleep, Wei Nianxi still had not returned.
***
The next morning, when Gu Qingnan went downstairs, there was only breakfast for one on the table.
“Did Wei Nianxi not come back last night?” Gu Qingnan asked the helper.
“Yes…”
After thinking it over, Gu Qingnan pulled out his phone and typed up yesterday’s progress with Wei Yeban into a text message to Wei Nianxi.
Wei Nianxi was Wei Yeban’s other father after all, and his encouragement and affirmation were crucial for the boy.
He hoped their strained relationship would not affect Wei Yeban, at least not at a time like this.
Wei Nianxi did not reply.
After finishing breakfast, Gu Qingnan headed upstairs.
Wei Yeban was still asleep.
Seeing him enter, Shen Qing looked over with concern.
“Are you alright?”
“What’s wrong?” Gu Qingnan asked, puzzled.
“You don’t know yet?” Shen Qing paused in surprise.
“Know what?”
Shen Qing hesitated, but ultimately said, “Didn’t the Wei family have a product launch yesterday?”
“There was a reception afterward, and your uncle’s family went as well, but apparently they didn’t have invitations, so they were thrown out halfway through…”
The commotion had been huge, and the domestic staff were all gossiping about it.
Gu Qingnan was surprised for a moment, followed by a cold sneer.
This was indeed something Gu Shenghai’s family would do.
And most likely, Wei Nianxi was definitely behind how it played out.
Gu Qingnan knew about that press launch; the new product was the Wei family’s primary upcoming release, directly tied to their revenue for the next two to three years.
For the banquet afterward, the people invited by the Wei family were naturally no ordinary folk, with likely most of Weicheng’s high society attending.
At such an important event, it was impossible for anyone without an invitation to slip in unnoticed.
Wei Nianxi had deliberately let them in only to throw them out.
Gu Shenghai’s family cared about saving face above all else.
Back when they secured the resources promised by Wei Nianxi, the first thing they had done was not seize the opportunity to develop their company, but change cars, buy luxury housing, and spruce up their appearance to squeeze into the upper class.
This would undoubtedly make them lose face entirely.
To them, it was sheer torment.
Yet Wei Nianxi’s goal was definitely not just to humiliate them; more importantly, it was the message Wei Nianxi conveyed through this incident.
Over the past three years, Gu Shenghai’s family had frequently thrown their weight around by boasting of their in-law status with Wei Nianxi.
Many had looked down on them, viewing them as buffoons, yet no one wanted to offend Wei Nianxi.
Now, however, things were different; Wei Nianxi clearly no longer gave any regard to ties with the Gu family…
The Gu family was going to suffer some harsh blows now.
“No need to pay it any mind.”
Gu Qingnan was in a good mood.
Pausing, he instructed, “If you run into them in the future, ignore them, and under no circumstances let them near Wei Yeban.”
Shen Qing was somewhat surprised and asked instinctively, “Are you on bad terms?”
The moment the words left her mouth, she realized she had overstepped, quickly adding, “Sorry, I was just asking offhand.”
Although she had been here for half a year, she had only arrived after Wei Yeban’s incident, so she knew nothing about what had happened prior.
She had heard bits from others, but she had never taken it to heart, because the Gu Qingnan in their rumors was clearly an entirely different person from the one she knew.
In their gossip, Gu Qingnan was a social climber, calculating, tyrannical, and malicious.
Yet the Gu Qingnan she saw was repressed and lonely; he was like an isolated island, ostracized by everyone around him, with no one caring what he thought or whether he was happy.
Just watching such an existence made her want to flee, yet Gu Qingnan did not even possess the right to escape.
Gu Qingnan roughly summarized his history with the Gu family.
“It’s indeed not very good…”
He shared this merely to give Shen Qing a head-up.
Unable to get anything out of Wei Nianxi, knowing the nature of Gu Shenghai’s family, they would likely come seeking him out again very soon.
There had actually been another condition in his arrangement with the Gu family back then.
The Gu family would give him what he demanded, he would marry Wei Nianxi, and once Wei Nianxi delivered the promised resources to the Gu family, he would sever all ties with the Gu family from then on.
Wei Nianxi was extraordinarily generous, providing resources worth at least thirty million yuan, and that was just the face value; with the backing and guarantees from the Wei family, proper management could turn that into hundreds of millions.
Yet now he and Wei Nianxi even had a child, and the resources promised by Wei Nianxi had long been fully delivered, but the Gu family had never intended to let go.
After all, a prized piece of meat like Wei Nianxi was a prize that everyone in Weicheng eyed hungrily.
Yet they probably never anticipated that Wei Nianxi handled matters without the slightest shred of mercy.
And he himself was not someone they could control either.
After listening, Shen Qing was clearly moved, with a touch of concern lingering in her eyes.
Gu Qingnan merely smiled.
Just as Shen Qing was about to say more, a noise came from beside them.
Wei Yeban had woken up at some point and was searching for his little rabbit.
Gu Qingnan hurriedly handed him the rabbit from the bedside table.
“The little lazybones is finally awake.”
Freshening up and washing Wei Yeban took some time.
By the time Gu Qingnan carried Wei Yeban to his own room after finishing, it was nearly ten o’clock.
Downstairs, the helper was leading a man roughly Shen Qing’s age toward the guest room.
Catching sight of Gu Qingnan, the man stopped in his tracks.
“Is that him?”
The man was looking at Wei Yeban in Gu Qingnan’s arms.
“Yes, he is Mr. Wei’s child,” the helper hastily explained.
Hearing this, the man picked up his suitcase and strode straight upstairs.
Seeing a stranger, Wei Yeban grew visibly uneasy, clutching his little rabbit tightly and turning his head away.
Gu Qingnan hurried to carry him into the room.
Moments later, when Gu Qingnan stepped outside again, the man was already standing at the door of Wei Yeban’s room.
Shen Qing was talking to him; they seemed to know each other.
“And you are…?” Gu Qingnan asked after pulling the door half-shut.
“Hello, I am the new doctor hired by Mr. Wei, Xia Gaosen.”
“You should have heard my name.”
The man confidently extended a hand toward Gu Qingnan.
“You can call me Dr. Xia from now on.”
Gu Qingnan was stunned, his brows furrowing uncontrollably in the next instant.
‘A new doctor hired by Wei Nianxi?’
‘Didn’t Wei Nianxi already agree not to replace anyone?’
He had already informed Wei Nianxi of the improvement in Wei Yeban’s condition, yet Wei Nianxi chose to replace the doctor at such a crucial moment?
‘What on earth is Wei Nianxi thinking?’
He could understand Wei Nianxi not caring about him, but Wei Yeban was a child Wei Nianxi carried for ten months and gave birth to—did he not care about his own child either?
Perhaps because the anger on Gu Qingnan’s face was so evident, Xia Gaosen’s brow furrowed slightly, though he recovered his confident smile in the next moment, his eyes tinged with greater aloofness.
He had done his homework before coming, and he knew about Gu Qingnan’s standing.
In this household, Gu Qingnan had no right to speak.
“I have reviewed all the child’s medical records, but as the attending physician, I would still like to see him in person first,” Xia Gaosen stated in a businesslike tone.
Gu Qingnan forcibly suppressed his anger.
“No.”
“He is very terrified of strangers right now; you just arrived, and meeting him directly will frighten him.”
He did not know how many prestigious titles Xia Gaosen held, but since Xia Gaosen had read Wei Yeban’s medical records, he ought to have known this much.
Xia Gaosen did not insist, turning instead toward Shen Qing beside them.
“Shall we talk first, then?”
He was quite surprised to find Shen Qing still here.
He knew of Shen Qing; they both belonged to the top tier in this field.
Doctors of their caliber would never co-treat a single patient, as each possessed their own established methodology.
Forcing them together would not produce a scenario where one plus one equals two, but would only complicate matters.
He had assumed Shen Qing was already dismissed.
Shen Qing’s expression was not pleasant either, but seeing that things had reached this point, she said nothing further, leading the way downstairs.
“This way.”
Watching the two go downstairs, Gu Qingnan peered through the crack of the door into the room, confirming that Wei Yeban was doing fine before pulling out his phone, finding Wei Nianxi’s number, and dialing.
