Chapter 47: A Visit to the Cemetery

The next day, early in the morning.

Duan Yan disguised herself, holding a bouquet of small daisies; Song Jin silently accompanied her, like a shadow.

This was a cemetery with very good feng shui in the city. The evergreen trees on both sides of the bluestone path were lush with leaves; unknown flowering trees, their pink blossoms swaying gently in the breeze, gave off a faint fragrance.

Because it was a workday and early in the morning, there were very few people, and the surroundings were exceptionally quiet.

As they stepped on the ground, a rustling sound echoed in the silence.

Duan Yan walked silently to a tombstone and squatted down.

The tombstone seemed to be quite old. The photo inlaid on it had already turned slightly yellow, but the kind smile in the photo was still heartwarming. Below it was carved—The Tomb of Duan Xu.

In Song Jin’s memory, Duan Xu was as warm as her own grandmother. Back then, it was she who had tended to all of Song Jin’s wounds. It was as if she could still see those gentle hands applying ointment to her wounds, healing them, just yesterday.

Upon seeing the photo, an indescribable sadness welled up in Song Jin.

“Grandma, I’ve come to see you.”

Counting it up, this was the first time she had come to visit during the official memorial day. Usually, she would come the day before or the day after.

Duan Yan’s fingers gently rubbed the glass cover over the photo, wiping away the dust. She stared blankly at the tombstone, her eyes slightly red.

The morning light fell on the photo, plating it with a golden halo, as if that kind smile had become even more brilliant.

The tears that had been welling up in Duan Yan’s eyes couldn’t help but slide down her cheeks, blurring her vision.

Seeing this, Song Jin silently handed her a tissue, signaling for her to wipe her tears.

“Thank you.”

Duan Yan glanced at Song Jin, took the tissue, and gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes.

Song Jin knew that no words were needed now. What Duan Yan needed was not verbal comfort, but silent companionship.

Song Jin gently extended her fingers and hooked them around Duan Yan’s, feeling no resistance from the other side. She then boldly held her hand, their fingers intertwining.

Duan Yan spoke intermittently, while Song Jin listened silently by her side.

Time gradually passed. The originally thin sunlight gradually became hotter, its warm light shining down on the two of them.

Duan Yan squeezed Song Jin’s hand, stood up, and said in a hoarse voice, “Let’s go.”

Song Jin followed Duan Yan’s footsteps. Halfway there, she let go of Duan Yan’s hand and suddenly turned back.

“Sister Duan, I have a few words to ask Grandma. Wait for me a moment.”

After speaking, Song Jin turned and jogged back to the tombstone.

For a moment, Duan Yan couldn’t think of what Song Jin would have to ask, since Song Jin didn’t know her grandmother. She stood where she was, watching Song Jin’s figure hurry away.

Song Jin simply knelt before the tombstone, her gaze falling on the photo.

“Grandma, you once saved my life. Although I don’t know if you remember, I am with Sister Duan now. I will take good care of her. I hope you can agree.”

Song Jin gently picked up a scattered petal from the ground, placed it in front of the tombstone, and said softly, “Like this, I’ll place a petal here. If you agree, this petal will not be blown away within one minute.”

A gentle breeze blew, and the petal trembled lightly, almost being blown away. But for some unknown reason, the petal seemed to be held down by a strange force, stubbornly holding its position, lying there quietly.

“Since it hasn’t been blown away, I’ll take that as your agreement.”

Song Jin gazed at the smiling photo on the tombstone, joy welling up in her heart like a spring.

The face in the photo, with its gentle smile, seemed to be genuinely happy that Song Jin and Duan Yan could spend this life together. On the petals of the small daisies beside it, dewdrops glistened, sparkling dazzlingly under the sunlight.

Song Jin slowly stood up, bowed deeply, and then, with a heart full of joy, ran towards Duan Yan.

Duan Yan watched Song Jin run over with a smile on her face and asked curiously, “What did you say to Grandma just now? You look so happy.”

“I just asked Grandma if she agrees to us being together, and she said yes.”

Duan Yan’s brow raised slightly. Could Song Jin communicate with the dead?

“I placed a petal on the ground. If the wind didn’t carry it away, it means Grandma has agreed to our marriage,” Song Jin explained.

A gentle breeze brushed past Song Jin’s beautiful hair, a strand of black hair playfully slipping across her face.

Song Jin held Duan Yan’s hand tightly, her gaze firm. “It doesn’t matter if your mother doesn’t agree. Grandma has agreed. From now on, the two of us will be together forever, okay?”

The light shining in her eyes was like a sky full of brilliant stars, leaving Duan Yan mesmerized.

“Okay.”

For the next two days, Song Jin was busy with her career. After all, she had already promised Duan Yan that she would not let their relationship delay her work.

For two consecutive nights, Song Jin was very well-behaved and did not sneak in at night.

… pitiful, saying “I didn’t sleep well last night,” and then looking at her expectantly, waiting for her to say she was forgiven.

… Duan’s appearance, couldn’t help but feel pity, and even had a strange impulse to forgive.

But only three days had passed, and to just…

… firm, but she just couldn’t harden her heart.

Sigh…

Duan Yan opened her satellite messenger and contacted her best friend, He Qing, hoping to get some advice from her.

He Qing was experienced in relationships and should know what to do.

It was nighttime now, which corresponded to He Qing’s daytime, so it wouldn’t be a disturbance.

Duan Yan carefully considered her words. “I have a friend who’s been having some relationship problems recently. Her partner deceived her, and her partner is the type of woman who’s especially good at making people’s hearts soften.”

He Qing’s reply was direct. “Break up. Next question.”

Duan Yan fell silent. This answer was too difficult for her. She couldn’t break up with Song Jin.

After a long while, she finally typed out a line: “She can’t. She can’t bear to.”

He Qing seemed to have realized something, and messages immediately bombarded her like a cannonade.

[“‘A friend of a friend’? You’re in a relationship?”

“Alright, alright, you’re not even going to tell me, are you? This friendship might as well be over! (angry)”

“Call me in five minutes. If you don’t make it clear today, don’t contact me again.”]

Duan Yan looked at the words on the screen, an embarrassed smile appearing on her face.

It seemed she had indeed forgotten to tell He Qing. It was all Song Jin’s fault for making her so…

Duan Yan tried to explain, “Sorry, it’s that younger girl I told you about before.”

But He Qing didn’t reply to her message, instead calling her directly. “What exactly is going on?”

Duan Yan explained softly, blurring out the part about Song Jin turning into a cat and seducing her.

“You were deceived, but you can’t bear to break up? What are you thinking?”

“She’s really good, I…”

Duan Yan recalled all the ways Song Jin had cared for her, that sincerity and passion, which made her heart waver.

But He Qing wasn’t buying it, speaking up for Duan Yan. “Good for what? She lied to you. I think you’ve been completely played by her.”

She had to admit that her heart was indeed firmly held by Song Jin.

Duan Yan replied with a bitter smile, “Yeah.”

‘I can’t help it. She’s so good at acting cute, she looks just the way I like, and she has cat ears and a tail. How can I refuse that?’

The person involved is always confused, while the bystander sees clearly. It was normal for her usually calm friend to be blinded after falling into the river of love.

He Qing sighed helplessly and offered her advice. “Fine, if you’re not willing to break up, then give her the cold shoulder for a few days. Let her reflect on it properly. You should also go and clear your head. Maybe you’ll realize she’s not all that.”

“No matter what, you have to protect yourself.”

A warmth spread through Duan Yan’s heart. “Okay. Would I let myself be taken advantage of?”

The He Qing on the other end seemed to have more to say, but in the end, she didn’t say it.

After hanging up, Duan Yan began to consider He Qing’s advice.

‘Go out and clear my head?’

Duan Yan suddenly recalled the travel variety show her manager had sent her before. At that time, she had refused because she wanted to stay with Song Jin.

Now that she thought about it, if she wanted to clear her head, this would be a good choice.

Duan Yan looked through her chat history with her manager, asked him to contact the program team, and prepared to participate.

The next day, her manager gave her a reply. Because the show had already started, she could only join as a surprise guest parachuting in.

Duan Yan sent an “Okay.”

These past few days, Song Jin had been busy with her career and with investigating the past matter, leaving her quite exhausted.

Although she had really wanted to sleep with Duan Yan these past few days, she had held back.

The matter from over ten years ago was finally cleared up.

According to the perpetrator’s testimony, at the moment he fled, both Duan Xu and Duan Yan had no visible bleeding. Duan Xu did not die saving Duan Yan, but rather from a sudden heart attack after being hospitalized.

Although this was not entirely unrelated to Duan Yan, it was much easier to accept than someone trading their life for hers.

Now, she could confess everything to Duan Yan and free her from her inner demons.

However, it was now eleven o’clock at night. Duan Yan usually went to bed at ten. At this time, she was probably already deep in her dreams. It would be better to wait until tomorrow morning to talk.

Wait, she was asleep.

Recalling how Duan Yan’s attitude towards her had softened recently, Song Jin’s eyes darted around, a cunning light flashing in them.

‘Let’s test the waters first.’

Song Yu silently transformed into an orange cat, slipped out of her room, and stealthily arrived at the door of Duan Yan’s bedroom.

When she saw Duan Yan’s door, her heart skipped a beat—

The door was ajar.

What did this mean? Did it mean that Duan Yan had already softened her attitude towards her in private and had quietly forgiven her?

She didn’t know how many days the door had been like this. A pang of sadness welled up in Song Jin’s heart.

If only she had come sooner, wuwuwu…

After the regret, only joy remained.

Song Jin was incredibly excited. She gently pushed the door open with her paw and tiptoed into the room.

However, with a slight push, the door closed with a “click,” the sound exceptionally clear in the quiet night.

Song Jin’s heart leaped in shock. She quickly held her breath, her gaze fixed on the lump on the bed. The person on the bed didn’t seem to have been disturbed by her actions.

Song Jin secretly breathed a sigh of relief and continued to glide cautiously until she reached the side of the bed. She gripped the bedsheet with her claws and silently climbed up.

These few days of separation had been agony for Song Jin.

She missed the fragrant embrace of her Wifey, and longed to fall asleep in Duan Yan’s arms.

Song Jin couldn’t wait to burrow into Duan Yan’s embrace.

However, the gentle fragrance she had expected was not there. All she felt was a cold touch.

Song Jin was stunned—

‘Where’s Duan Yan?’

‘Where is my big Wifey?’
