KAIST’s personal statement for admission.
The first question.
During your high school years, what efforts have you made in relation to your career path? Describe it focusing on
meaningful learning experiences and extracurricular activities.
To this cliche question, which is always included in any university application,
Amae Shizuko started her answer like this.
I am a sinner.
Saying that she is a sinner.
“……Uh, huh?”
The admissions officer rubbed his eyes at the first sentence of the personal statement, which no one had expected.
Like an indelible stigma, even if I dare to atone, there is an unpardonable original sin flowing in the lineage of my blood.
But he hadn’t seen it wrong.
But when he was reading that sentence, for some reason, his heart began to tickle.
Something I feel like I know………… but not specified………………
The sin called history.
A sin that cannot be erased, even if it is recorded and distorted.
The history of denationalization completed by taking away sovereignty under the name of a treaty and assassinating
the queen of another country
Because of that Japanese colonial period, I, who was born in Japan, have a duty to atone.
As most of the people with the same nationality as me ignore, distort, and even act brazenly, saying that they did not
directly shed blood,
I must atone.
“Ugh……?!”
Of course, he knew history properly, but he was tired of the mindless anti-Japanese movement and bullying of the
older generation.
But for some reason, as if he couldn’t avoid being Korean.
A certain Japanese girl’s confession, which was close to a confession, stimulated the heart of the admissions officer
Park, which had already hardened.
‘……Ah, no! I’m not going to be caught by this emotional appeal………… But, but why……………!’
It should no longer be ignored.
It should no longer be avoided.
Therefore, even if it’s just me, I want to step forward.
If there is a path set for me, it is only atonement, that’s all.
Therefore, I take this opportunity,
Although I am merely a girl from Wakoku, with no representation or qualifications, please accept my apology
without forgiveness.
I’m sorry.
“……Why am I now…………! imagining the appearance of a Japanese girl taking off her kimono in real time and
performing a naked dogeza?!”
That’s probably because you…………….
Nevertheless, Korea, the Republic of Korea, overcame all these adversities on its own, and has become a world-
leading country that stands tall above the spirit of Wakoku.
Especially under the name of the Miracle on the Han River, the GDP of the Republic of Korea in just half a
century…………… The only country to go from receiving aid to giving aid…………… Ah, for reference, aid here is not an
abbreviation for compensated dating♡
On the other hand, we did not learn the lessons of the Pacific War, and as a result of coveting the United States
again during the bubble economy, we lost 30 years through the Plaza Accord……………(omitted)…………… So our
Wakoku has become a country that cannot even maintain its economy without the Korean semiconductor market,
and just barely makes a living from the remainder of overseas infrastructure and real estate investments during the
bubble.
“……Uh, huh? Something suddenly feels a little lame………… This is a familiar scent…………….”
“Sob! That’s right, this is it! Korean materials, parts, and equipment! G-SOMIA! White List or whatever, anyway,
those Japanese guys can’t do anything without us Koreans?!”
“……Te, Team Leader?”
I suddenly remembered.
While taking a break during lunch time and watching Vtuber Mutube, the team leader suddenly saw it and said, ‘I’ll
teach you anti-Japanism’ and showed it to me…………… That terrible thumbnail of a nationalistic Mutube…………….
For some reason, I smelled that smell in the middle of this Japanese girl’s personal statement.
But as such,
“Even I, who only watches Mutube (nationalistic), knows this! That kid is 100 times, 1,000 times better than their
president! She should be the president of Japan!!”
“No………… Japan is a prime ministerial system, not a presidential system…………….”
“What?! Do you think I’d say that without even knowing that?! Are you pro-Japanese?!”
“……Ah, no.”
“Try to object to Shizuko-san’s words one more time, okay?!!”
“Ye…….”
‘…….The one who’s being pro-Japanese right now is you, you bastard!’
The team leader had already been completely captivated by this girl, Amae Shizuko.
Den
…………In addition, under the name of K-culture, that is, Hallyu, its intangible influence is also…………(omitted)………….
Especially, I visited the National Cemetery before, and then I saw the Statue of Peace in front of the embassy in
Jongno-gu, Seoul, and I cleaned it with a feeling of atonement.
Korean women are all so pretty, beautiful, and tall that I was even more ashamed and bowed my head.
Why are Korean unnies so pretty? Is it innate?
“Of course, everyone gets plastic surgery…………….”
“Oh my~ What do you mean unnies~ Why are they all so pretty~ It’s because only pretty people go outside, oh ho ho~!”
“……”
“Besides, she came all the way to Korea on her own to personally clean the Statue of Peace………… How can there be
such a wonderful child in Japan? Sniffle, right? Mr. Park.”
“……Ah, yes. That’s right.”
‘Ah, no. Has this woman also completely fallen for it?!’
It wasn’t just the team leader, but also the female colleague admissions officer.
Just by looking at her eyes, admissions officer Park could tell.
That look is the look of looking at a ‘close younger sister’ who is ‘on her side’.
“……Ye, everyone! First……………! Let’s look at things like grades and skills! Well, if you look closely, this has nothing
to do with learning experience or extracurricular activities, right?!”
“Ah, well, that’s true.”
“I know! That’s why all the young men these days are like Mr. Park, with good specs but no personality…… tsk tsk.”
Thanks to the strong argument of admissions officer Park, the atmosphere that was about to go to a first-round
document screening pass without any rhyme or reason was barely stopped.
“But to do that, we have to read all those proofs of excellence, right? Isn’t it better to just leave it to the professors?”
“Yeah! If you really want to check, Mr. Park, you can find it and tell us. I’m going to the bathroom for a moment
to………… Sob! wash my face………… Sob…………! Ah, the spirit of Korea!”
“……Ah! I forgot! I have a limited edition Hermes new product………….. No, I have an important business call to
make, so I’ll be away for a moment. Then I’ll leave the rest to you~”
Of course, at the cost of making admissions officer Park’s work life a little harder.
‘Ugh…………! I’ll somehow reveal the true nature of this silver-haired, blue-eyed, unnecessarily-one-strand-of-black-
hair-in-the-front loli-god middle school girl who looks like she’s doing compensated dating, ranking 7th, mesugaki!!’
‘And then I’ll make her do a naked dogeza in front of me wearing only stockings………… Ah, no. I’ll just drop her,
that’s all………….
Admissions officer Park suddenly lit a fire in his eyes, but then calmed down.
‘…….No matter how good her personality is, in the end, if she doesn’t have the skills, she can’t survive in this school.’
Excluding nationalism and Hallyu-ism, and the apologies of ‘I’m sorry’ that were inserted in between when you were
about to forget them, from the personal statement,
only the content for judging only ‘study skills’ was selectively viewed.
Despite having come this far, you♡ who still have a gleam in your eyes to FAIL me.
“Gasp.”
Admissions officer Park suddenly looked behind him.
There was no one.
He looked back at the part of the personal statement he was looking at.
You’re really amazing♡ Most Koreans would have already fallen for it, but you didn’t even read this
Ah, don’t worry~ You don’t have to look back, this is already written, it’s not like it’s a Hogwarts newspaper.
There’s no way I wrote this while monitoring you in real time, right?
Gulp.
Admissions officer Park unknowingly swallowed hard.
Ah, but admissions officer Park.
My teacher is very close to you in many ways~ so I heard a few things………….
“…………..Ho, How did you know that I, I’m Mr. Park………… Gasp, gasp…………”
This unidentifiable fear rising from an unknown place.
After seeing the news about the part-time job checking 500,000 hidden cameras in public restrooms in Seoul, I
definitely thought it was stupid,
but now, for some reason, I felt like I was starting to understand the feelings of the people who advocated it, in real time.
Surely, with your personality, hmm~ you’re still suspicious of my skills, right? That’s right………… Surely you’re
someone who knows KAIST in 2011…………….
Amae Shizuko.
I understand. It must have been like that. Back then, it was like that. Especially for you, who was practically a party
involved at that time, class of ’11.
That Japanese girl, as if,
But please bear with it now~ If you really can’t accept it, those unnecessarily sent, my back was about to break, those
archive papers,
be sure to show them to Professor Seo Anguk~
already knew.
Actually, they’re all uploaded on the archive, so you can just look at them…… My back……… Are you going to take
responsibility? I’m upset
Please
Admissions officer Park, who he is.
Ah, and this is a message from my teacher,
“Teacher…..?”
The mountain path stairs leading to the professor’s hall on the north side of the computer science department N1 in
the Basic Science Building, the place behind the central warehouse where we used to smoke and goof off
together………
And,
Do you still hate menthol and only smoke Amber, which tastes like burning paper?
“…?!!”
Surely even the belief that someone would notice that fact.
-Thump!!
It was right after that.
“Hmm, I should buy about three of these new products and resell them later when they’re matured……………
Kyaaak?! Yo, This bastard! Ho, How did you know that I always goof off here-!!”
“……Let’s accept her unconditionally!”
-Yes……?”
