Chapter 15: Selas Democratic Republic

The Selas Democratic Republic is a powerful nation on the Sun-Returning Continent.

There is much to describe.

Its economic strength is immense, playing a vital role globally.

Selas rulers employ capable talent wisely, the main reason for economic success and orderly governance.

Selas order thrives not only through wise staffing, but also through its unique democratic-republic system.

Under this system, Selas has no singular ruler or prime minister.

Power is jointly maintained by national public organizations and strong regional noble factions.

Some question why poverty and wealth differ widely if Selas is democratic.

This, in fact, is the true reason for Selas’s comprehensive strength.

Selas does not impulsively eliminate class differences or forcibly elevate the poor.

Its leaders understand such actions would cause conflict and interest division.

Selas prioritizes peace as its guiding principle in diplomacy and internal affairs.

Through this principle, many complex problems are resolved, including territorial and international disputes.

Militarily, Selas follows the rule:
“If others do not attack us, we do not attack.
If others attack us, we attack in return.”

Any nation that attacks Selas, regardless of reason, will be countered.

Selas military strength is far above the world average.

Its military spending is second only to the Northern Mong Empire.

This is why Northern Mong covets Selas’s rise.

But such behavior cannot be called proper diplomacy.

Selas experienced many uprisings and changes of national title throughout history.

Yet in each era, citizen life remained average or stable.

Today Selas citizens enjoy quality of life far above global levels.

Its military influence was clear in the “Conquest Era,” when small nations sought Selas for protection.

Getu-Tartar Khan feared attacking Selas, and therefore Selas became one of the few Sun-Returning nations he did not defeat.

Aside from the dictatorship of the Tiantong era, Selas remained orderly and peaceful.

Today, two regions remain unreturned: Jieshi City in the northeast and Eastern Selas, which previously gained independence with Northern Mong support.

Both should return to Selas territory.

Northern Mong’s enthusiasm for dividing other nations is perplexing.

The empire once fought only unjust forces, yet now behaves differently.

May Northern Mong reform itself and learn from Selas.

Then it will grow stronger and maintain its international standing.

While writing this chapter on Selas, I constantly thought of the future of our world.

The Selas chapter is my most carefully written work in Root of the World.

Thus its length exceeds even the chapter on Northern Mong, for I wished to explain Selas comprehensively.

I sincerely respect this nation, long worthy of our study.
