Chapter 2: The Maiden in the Wheat Field

Xia Ni ambled through the wheat field, the stalks reaching almost to her height.

Her new body was so short… not even one meter sixty-five, a bit shorter than her sister, in fact. In Xia Ni’s previous world, this height would have been considered petite. She brushed a lock of silver-white hair from her face, the silky touch a curious stimulant to her nerves.

At her feet, a small puddle reflected her visage. A maiden of ethereal beauty gazed back at Xia Ni, her silver-white hair fanned across the ground, as captivating as an angel.

It was a little embarrassing to admit, but Xia Ni had fallen in love with this red-eyed, white-haired girl at first sight! ‘Damn it, why did that person have to be me?’

She was clad in a golden-red robe, though its style was ancient, reminiscent of a Roman ‘toga.’ ‘Senate, toga… could I really have transmigrated to Rome?’

Xia Ni’s right hand instinctively reached for the necklace hanging around her neck, turning it over in her palm. The necklace was exquisitely crafted, but only to that extent – perhaps Xia Ni simply couldn’t discern any hidden purpose in it.

These items had been provided by the Senate upon her transmigration, likely with some specific intention. She fiddled with it for a while, but it yielded no response whatsoever.

Speaking of which, it was incredibly quiet. Even Alice and Wuxu’s voices were absent from her mind. They must have returned to the Senate.

It was only when Xia Ni attempted to call out to them in her mind that she realized they no longer responded.

They had, at least, instilled a considerable amount of knowledge about this world into Xia Ni’s mind. Such as the Eledis Empire, the Principality of Saint Florus…

Surprisingly, apart from those perplexing nations, the other settings were highly similar to the game she knew. For instance, this world was currently in a medieval state and harbored various fantasy races.

And just like in the game, this was a low-magic world. The vast majority of magic was controlled by the Senate.

Beyond the Senate, a very small number of individuals could also use magic, but these people were often branded as witches or sorcerers and burned at the stake. Some were even hunted down by agents of the Senate.

Xia Ni belonged to the ‘Vampire’ race, a choice Wuxu had specifically made for her to ensure she wouldn’t perish midway through her endeavors. Vampires were exceedingly rare in this world and highly reviled by ordinary people. If her identity were exposed, let alone becoming a lord, she could easily be tied to a cross and burned by an enraged mob.
