“As expected, I ended up here.”

Walking through the black market, Meng Linna’s eyes dazzled.

Despite the name, it was like any city night market.

Stalls everywhere, just with more varied goods.

Lost in the sights, someone tapped her shoulder.

“Hey, it’s that girl from last time!”

Turning, Meng Linna saw Blue Dragon Hagi, the drunk who gave her the Marigold Potion recipe.

“Hi.”

She raised a hand shyly.

“Didn’t expect to run into you here.”

“I’m not some shut-in dragon. Coming out to wander is normal.”

Hagi rubbed her nose.

“Tried that recipe I gave you? How’d it work?”

“Pretty good. Super popular.”

Thanks to Hagi’s recipe, Meng Linna made a fortune.

Though the five gold coins for it only just broke even.

“So what’re you here for? Honest earning too boring? Want to go big?”

“Wow, that’s a dangerous comment! Are you some stock-trading college kid?”

Recalling Hagi’s drunken state last time, Meng Linna felt this dragon had issues.

“No way.”

Hagi waved it off.

“Just saw a familiar face and said hi. If you’re good, I’ll head out.”

“Wait!”

Meng Linna stopped her.

“I’m here to buy something. You seem to know the black market. Can you help me find stuff?”

“Find stuff?”

Hagi tilted her head.

“What do you need?”

“I want to buy a holy seal…”

Meng Linna spilled her need for a spell-casting holy seal.

“I see.”

Hagi nodded.

“You need a holy seal as a spell catalyst.”

“Exactly!”

Seeing Hagi get it, Meng Linna nodded eagerly.

Hagi thought for a moment.

“Holy seals are rare at night market stalls. But there’s bound to be a few in the city. I know there’s an auction in the black market tonight. Wanna come? You might find what you need.”

“Sounds great, I’m in!”

Having read novels, Meng Linna knew auctions had rare goodies.

She might snag a deal.

In Yanan, holy seal users were few.

Just her, Na Naya, and Miao Miao Niya.

If a seal was up, no one would outbid her, right?

“Good.”

Hagi grinned.

“Follow me.”

She led Meng Linna to a tavern door.

Before they got close, a bouncer spotted Hagi.

“Hey, you here to drink again? You don’t have a reservation today, do you?”

Meng Linna looked at Hagi curiously.

“Drinking needs reservations?”

Seeing a new face, the bouncer’s tone softened, unlike with Hagi.

“Not for most. But this one drinks a ton. Causes trouble. To protect our tavern’s image, she needs to book ahead.”

“Huh?”

Meng Linna stared at Hagi, shocked.

Hagi just laughed.

“Haha, you’re embarrassing me.”

“Uh.”

Meng Linna was floored by Hagi’s shamelessness.

“I don’t know what you’re embarrassed about. If you dragged me here to get free drinks, forget it.”

She turned to leave.

“Since your auction’s fake, I’m out.”

“Wait, dear lady.”

The bouncer stopped her.

“We do have an auction tonight.”

“For real?”

Meng Linna glanced at Hagi skeptically.

“I told you there’d be one. You just didn’t trust me.”

Hagi shrugged, looking innocent.

“If you’re interested, I’ll guide you.”

The bouncer was extra polite to the new guest.

Meng Linna’s goal was the auction.

She agreed readily.

“Lead the way, please. I want to join.”

“Here you go.”

The bouncer led them to the tavern’s basement.

The auction was already underway.

The dim basement lighting hid details.

Maybe to keep the items mysterious.

After brief auction instructions, the bouncer left.

Unlike her expectations, the venue was crude.

No VIP rooms.

People sat on barrels.

Less an auction, more like drunks watching a bartender water down booze.

Forcing herself to ignore the details, Meng Linna looked at the stage.

A caged werewolf was being auctioned.

Just then, the host announced.

“Congratulations to this gentleman for winning the werewolf for one gold coin!”

“Huh? They sell slaves here?”

Meng Linna hadn’t expected much, but live people?

She froze.

“Slaves? You got it wrong.”

Hagi shook her head.

“Most buyers here have one goal: medical research.”

“Medical research?”

“Experiments. Drained to death is a good outcome. This is Yanan, the medical city. Health is pricey; lives are cheap.”

“Forget I asked.”

During their talk, the next item came up.

“A healing potion by an anonymous master. Heals wounds rapidly, highly effective. Starting at one gold coin!”

Meng Linna looked closely.

Wasn’t that her Marigold Potion?

How’d it end up here, starting at one gold?

What a rip-off!

Black markets probably have lots of fake hoods don’t they.
