Part One

August 2, 2025, Saturday.

The alarm blares the weather forecast, paired with the soft patter of rain outside, tempting one to burrow into the blankets and doze all day.
The alarm stops, but the doorbell keeps ringing. Half-asleep, Cola thinks it’s part of a dream until she rolls on the tatami, smacks into the tea table, and realizes it’s real.
In her mind, she plans to get up and answer, but she only dreams of opening the door. When she jolts awake, the rain has stopped, clouds parted, revealing a bright sun.
Was the doorbell just in her dream? Why did it stop?

Crawling up, Cola suspiciously opens the door. The hallway’s empty—no one.
“No one rang the bell…”

“Cola!”

“Ah! You scared me! Why’re you hiding behind the door?!”

“You didn’t open it, so I played on my phone for a bit.”

“You could’ve gone home…”

“Thought about it, but I got lucky pulling cards here, so I kept going.”

Cola sighs helplessly, rubbing her messy hair.
“Come in. How long you been waiting?”

“Mm… half an hour? The rain stopped.”

“Why’re you here so early? Yawn… Thought you pulled another all-nighter.”

“I need one more summer diary entry but don’t know what to write, so I wanna go out…”

“Then go.”

“B-But… alone…”

“Got it. Scared to go alone, want me to tag along?”

“Mm-hmm!”

“How’re you so sure I’d say yes?”

“Eh?!”

“Haha, that panicked face—love it. I’ll take it.”

“C-Cola—!!”

“Alright, alright, I’ll wash up and change. Yawn… You eat breakfast?”

“Mom and Dad went on a date, so no breakfast.”

“They still go on dates? Old married couple and still romantic…”
Cola smacks her lips.
“Let’s grab something to eat outside, or we’ll be too hungry to walk.”

“Okay… Cola, your trash bin’s full.”

“Oh, I’ll take it out later!”

“But today’s not burnable trash day… That was yesterday.”

“Huh? Yesterday was… right, Friday. Damn, missed it…!”
Cola slaps her forehead.
“Ugh, so annoying.”

“Better not let it pile up. It’ll stink in summer…”

“When’s the next burnable trash day?”

“Mm… Tuesday.”

“Three more days, huh? Good thing I don’t cook much…”

“Made a meal on a whim yesterday?”

“Nah, Class Prez made it. Oh, there’s leftover fried chicken in the fridge, but no microwave… Re-frying’s too much work this early.”

“Eat it later then? Wait… you and Class Prez are that close?”

“Huh? Not really, but she’s kinda forward… She takes care of me, sure, but it’s still awkward.”

“Eh? Forward? Class Prez? Those words don’t go together…”

“How’s she at school?”

“Mm… a lone wolf. She organizes class stuff perfectly but doesn’t talk much unless necessary.”

“Is she bad at expressing herself or just aloof? But aloof people don’t just visit others’ homes…”
Cola clutches her head, shuffling to the bathroom, squeezing toothpaste onto her brush.
“Ugh… too much. Whatever, I’ll brush with it…”

Liuli peeks into the fridge at the plastic-wrapped fried chicken, then eyes the chilled cola.
“Cola—can I take one to drink?”

“Mmph…! Talking to me or the cola?”
Cola jokes, mouth full of toothpaste.

“Eh? Um… maybe both?”
Liuli giggles.
“I’ve been loving cola lately…”

“Vampire side effect, huh? Still better than sucking blood.”

“Blood-sucking’s cool, but yeah, it’s a hassle. Gotta hunt people daily…”

“Cola-drinking vampires are perfect for shut-ins. Plus, no gaining weight—it all turns to magic.”

“Not even vampires anymore—Cola Clan!”

“Sounds so uncool!”

“Mm… yeah, kinda.”

Part Two

Before leaving, Cola triple-checks her keys, locks the door, and squints at the breeze.
“So nice after rain, but it’ll get hot by noon… So, how we getting there?”

“Walking!”

“Walking, huh? Where to?”

“Gunma Prefectural Office… Ever been, Cola?”

“Nope.”

“It’s like the provincial government building.”

“What for? Getting a marriage license?”
Cola teases.

“Eh?! N-No! It’s for the observation deck!”

“Can regular people go up?”

“Yup, anyone can!”

“For real? It’s a government building.”

“Mm, but it’s open to the public, just certain floors.”

“Alright, we walk then?”
Cola opens her parasol.
“It’s cool, but the sun’s still harsh…”

“It’s 20-30 minutes on foot. The bus stop’s a minute or two away, but then it’s a 10-minute walk from the stop, so might as well walk.”

“No complaints.”

“Yay!”
Liuli, now downstairs, opens her own parasol—a fancy black one, unlike Cola’s.
“Look, Cola, my treasured bat umbrella! It’s got bat wings on top!”

“Whoa, really? What, a kindergarten graduation gift?”

“W-What! I bought it myself! Never used it ‘cause I couldn’t bear to!”

“It’s kinda small…”

“Small’s convenient! Yours is small too!”

“Uh, I just grabbed one. Oh, wait, Class Prez gave it to me.”

“N-Next time, I’ll give you one!”

“Huh? No need, what do I do with so many umbrellas?”

“I’ve got a bright red one!”

“No, no, I mean I don’t need more umbrellas!”

“Cola-san—! It’s rude to reject a bestie’s gift!”

“Ha?! Fine, fine…”

“Mm, I’ll bring it over then!”

“Thanks in advance…”

Part Three

At the convenience store, Cola lingers at the shelves for five minutes, unable to decide on breakfast.
Sushi looks good but too little. Onigiri are cheap but boring. Yakisoba looks decent but cold—gross. A bento at 8 a.m. feels weird.

“Cola~ Decided yet?”

“Nah, not yet.”

“Eh, can’t choose?”

“Bit torn…”

“Onigiri’s easiest for eating on the go.”

“What’d you get, Liuli?”
Cola tilts her head.

“Tuna onigiri and oolong tea~”

“Oolong tea, huh…”

“Want one? I’ve got a coupon—second bottle half price!”

“Oh, I’ll take an oolong tea then… and a braised pork onigiri. Never tried it.”

“Heat that one up, it tastes better!”

“How do you know?”

“Eh? ‘Cause… I ate a cold one once, and it wasn’t great…”

“You were too shy to ask the clerk to heat it, huh?”

“W-Why don’t convenience stores have self-service microwaves!”

“Lawson’s got ‘em. Maybe others will catch up.”

“If they do… does that mean more social anxiety in the future?”

“Sounds like a sad society.”
Cola smirks, heading to the counter, shouting to the clerk sorting shelves, “Yo, buddy, time to ring us up!”

“B-Buddy?”
The clerk pauses, then laughs.
“Haha, coming… Together?”

“Yup, together.”

“Eh? I-I can pay for mine…”

“We’re out together, why split it?”

“S-Splitting’s… normal, right?”
Liuli hides behind Cola, blushing.

“Is it?”

“Y-Yeah… avoids trouble…”

“Calculating’s the trouble.”

“T-Then I’ll treat you next time!”

“No need to keep score.”

“Haha, the silver-haired girl’s from %@, right?”

“Eh, how’d you guess?”

“Experience! So—together?”

“Together, together.”
Cola nods.
“It’s just an onigiri and oolong tea. I can afford it.”

“W-Wait!”
Liuli, flustered, holds up a receipt with both hands.
“H-Here… c-can you use this…!”

“Lemme see… Yup, second oolong tea half price, right?”

“Y-Yes!”

“Whoa, relax, you were just talking to me fine…”

“Ugh…”

“Not saying anything bad, don’t be sad…!”

“Here’s your change. Come back soon!”

“We’ll swing by if we pass.”
Cola waves lazily.

“Pass by often, silver-haired miss!”

“Talk later—”
Cola replies halfheartedly, stepping outside with Liuli.

“Phew… that clerk’s the type I’m worst with…”
Liuli clutches her chest, exhaling.

“What’s different about him?”

“H-He talks about stuff beyond shopping… It’s scary…”

“That’s just being friendly, not scary.”

“I-It’s too friendly, so it’s scary!”

“Can’t wrap my head around what social anxiety’s scared of…”

“C-Cola-san… do you hate me now?”

“Huh? Not at all.”

“Ugh…”

“Okay, maybe I’m starting to get what social anxiety’s about…”
