âMmmâŠâ
Vegaâs soft moan snaps me back to reality.
âDid I justâŠ?!?â
Iâve been trying to build rapport and comfort her, and instead of thanking her, I just blurted out some cringey nonsense.
âI-Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have said thatâŠâ
ââŠDonât use formal language if youâre sorry.â
âHuh?â
âCall me Vega.â
With that, she quickly left. Am I dreaming? My favorite villainess told me to call her by her name? If this is a dream, I never want to wake up.
âJaehan, where should I put these?â
âOh, those need to be dried before we sell them. Leave them over there.â
âOkay.â
ââŠSomethingâs different.â
Vega Spica, the defeated heroine, stands beside me, working diligently. While this is still dream-like, itâs real. After I carried her to the bench, she started helping with the farm work. I didn’t ask her to, butâŠ
âHonestly, sheâs amazing!!â
She mastered my years of cultivated farming expertise in no time. Crop care, cultivation, even managing the green slimes, which I still struggle with. I wanted to comfort her, but sheâs the one comforting me. But the most important change isn’t her helpâŠ
âVega, I can handle this. You should restâŠâ
ââŠâ
âIs there something on my face?â
ââŠNo.â
She sometimes stares intensely at me, then quickly looks away when our eyes meet.
âWhy?â
Ever since my ill-advised attempt at flirting after seeing her in pain, sheâs been acting strange. Itâs not hostility; sheâs helping too much for that. But her gaze⊠a mixture of emotions⊠too intense to be affection.
âBut weâre closer than when she first arrived, so it’s a positive sign⊠right?â
Three weeks into this ambiguous relationship, delivery day arrives.
âOkay, the produce is ready. Anything elseâŠâ
âHey! Jin Jaehan!â
Mr. Kimâs grating voice interrupts me. Heâs here for the crops.
âComing!â
I rush outside with the crates.
âWhy are you so late? Always slacking offâŠâ
âHahaha⊠Please check the produce firstâŠâ
âUgh, move!â
Annoyed by the slight delay, he shoves me aside and inspects the crates.
âHmm? HmmâŠâ
âAre they alright?â
âWell⊠the quality is still poor.â
ââŠIs that so?â
He tosses my carefully grown produce around like theyâre defective.
â500 gold should be enough.â
ââŠâ
âWhatâs with that face? You donât want the money?â
ââŠNo, sir.â
I know these crops, my hard work, are worth more than this paltry sum. But I have no other way to make a living. I was lucky to get this abandoned land and cabin, but itâs too remote to easily transport goods to Horizonâs central region, and I donât have the funds for that.
âActually, Iâm short on cash. Iâll pay you later.â
âThatâs a bit difficult, sir. You havenât paid me for the last batch either.â
âI just said I donât have the money! Why are you so inflexible?â
âThis isnât right. Letâs postpone this delivery. Please pay me for the previous batch firstâŠâ
Thwack!!
He kicks my shin.
âUghâŠâ
âYou think youâre funny? I said Iâll pay you! Canât you wait a little longer?â
Poke. Poke.
He pokes my shoulder condescendingly.
âYou should be grateful I even buy these crops! Donât get ahead of yourself!â
ââŠâ
âThese uneducated
ers⊠give them an inch and they take a mile. You need to learn your place!â
ââŠâ
Iâm used to the insults. Iâm about to give in and end this conversation whenâŠ
âJaehan?â
A chilling voice, filled with killing intent, echoes from behind me.
Life in the cabin was peaceful for Vega Spica, unjustly imprisoned after being abandoned by the First Prince, Urs. She experienced a comfort she never knew in Horizon, where sheâd been constantly subjected to schemes and assassination attempts. Yet, her heart was in turmoil.
ââŠUgh.â
Once, sheâd wanted nothing more than to escape the pain, to give up on life. Sheâd also been consumed by the desire for revenge. But nowâŠ
ââŠThis is strange. So strange.â
It wasnât the betrayal or the hatred for Urs that occupied her mind, but Jaehan, an ordinary man.
She was still wary of him. He could be hiding his true intentions, waiting to exploit her vulnerability.
âI canât trust him yet. I need to keep watching him.â
She stayed close, hoping to uncover his true nature.
âThese need to be driedâŠâ
He wasnât particularly handsome, yet she found her gaze drawn to him. Especially his eyes⊠the eyes that clearly saw her, Vega Spica, the person hidden behind the powerful, beautiful magic that no one else seemed to see.
ââŠBewitching.â
âVega? Is there something on my face?â
âWhat am I thinking?!â
ââŠN-no.â
She quickly looked away, embarrassed.
As she grappled with these confusing emotions, justifying her constant presence as âobservation,â time passed.
Thump. Clatter.
âHmmâŠâ
The sound of moving crates wakes Vega. She follows the noise and finds Jaehan diligently preparing for delivery. He straightens, takes a breath, and carries the crates outside.
Thump.
ââŠI should help him.â
No longer bothering to hide her intentions, she smooths her clothes and follows him with a flutter of anticipation.
What she finds isâŠ
ââŠUgh.â
âYou think youâre funny? I said Iâll pay you! Canât you wait?â
âŠa greedy beast harassing Jaehan.
âJaehan?â
âWho is this woman? Iâve never seen her before.â
The beast snarls.
âHey, whatâs going on here? Did this beggar bring some naive rich girl? Hahaha!â
It barks incessantly, a greedy creature biting at a human, unaware of its own insignificance. Vegaâs mind clears, and her dormant rage awakens.
Crackle⊠sizzleâŠ!!
âW-what is thisâŠ?!â
The ground trembles, echoing Vega Spicaâs fury. The beast stumbles back in terror, but it’s too late.
RumbleâŠ!!
âAaargh! Help me!â
Black magic, the color of pre-dawn skies, erupts from Vegaâs slender fingertips, ensnaring the beastâs limbs. Her cold logic presents options, none of them offering the quick release of death.
Crack⊠crunch!!
Bones grind. The beastâs arm doesn’t just break; it melts.
âAaaaagh! My arm! My arm!â
Vega ignores its screams. Her eyes glow red as her magic flows.
ââŠNext, the legs.â
She wonât let this disgusting creature touch Jaehan again. She won’t let it hurt the one who sees her.
ââŠIâll crush them allâŠâ
âVega!â
A voice calls out, and warmth returns to her cold eyes.
The air froze, and I couldn’t think. The pressure was suffocating.
âAaaaagh! Help me!â
I don’t care if that pig of a shopkeeper lives or dies, but I need to stop Vega.
Even in this frozen moment, my eyes are drawn to her arms and hands. The magic seeping from her unhealed wounds⊠My instincts scream at me to quell her rage.
The magic in the air makes my skin tingle and my senses numb, but I fight through it, calling out to her.
âVega!â
â!!!â
As she looks at me, her rage subsides.
Thud.
âP-please forgive me! Iâm sorry for lying about the crops, for saying I didnât have the money when I did! Greed blinded me⊠please spare meâŠ!â
Mr. Kim collapses, sobbing and confessing his misdeeds. I want to beat him myself, butâŠ
ââŠJust go. Before you get hurt any further.â
I let him leave, worried he might discover Vegaâs true identity.
âTh-thank you! Thank you so much!â
He scrambles away, clutching his broken arm. I approach Vega, who looks lost.
âVega, are youâŠâ
ââŠ!!!â
Her eyes tremble. Not with physical pain, but with fear⊠fear of rejection, fear of disgust, fear that I, like everyone else, will finally see her as the âVillainess,â the ugly, wicked creature they believe her to be.
The ruby light in her eyes fades.
âJ-Jaehan, IâŠâ
She clutches her bleeding arm, her body shaking.
ââŠVega.â
All I can do is reach out and hold her.
âThank you for getting angry for me. You donât have to be afraid.â
ââŠâ
âIâll always be here for you.â
ââŠJaehan.â
Her trembling slowly stops. But I hold her, until sheâs calm, until she knows I wonât abandon her.
