Chapter 4: Peggy Wants to Make Big Money Too

“Speaking of making big money, Miao has a lucrative job here. Wonder if you two are interested?”

Miao Miao Niya licked her paw with her tongue.

But the smile on her face made Meng Linna uneasy.

“So, what’s the job?”

Though wary of Miao Miao Niya’s offer, Meng Linna needed money now.

How could she make big money without taking some risks?

“Yeah.”

Peggy, beside her, grew serious.

“Tell us a bit more.”

In Yanan, you could skip earning money, but you couldn’t avoid spending it.

Even for a local like Peggy, without a steady income, she’d just burn through her savings.

“Recently, a dungeon appeared near Yanan.”

Miao Miao Niya pulled out a map.

“The monsters inside have mostly been cleared by adventurers. But the mineral resources haven’t been surveyed at all.”

“So you need us to prospect?”

Meng Linna waved her hand.

“That’s not really our thing. We’re adventurers, not geologists!”

“Miss Xiao Meng, can you let others finish speaking before you interrupt?”

Miao Miao Niya didn’t hold back.

She landed a cat-paw punch on Meng Linna’s head.

A bump instantly formed.

“Ouch…”

Peggy quickly diverted Miao Miao Niya’s attention.

“So what exactly is our job?”

“Of course, it’s not prospecting minerals.”

Miao Miao Niya pulled out a commission.

“Professionals will handle the professional stuff. The guild has organized a geology team to survey the dungeon. They just need some bodyguards.”

“Us?”

Peggy pointed at herself in disbelief.

“But we’re only D-rank adventurers, right?”

“It’s not just you two as bodyguards. And Peggy just mentioned Xiao Meng was at the convent, right?”

Meng Linna, called out, was caught off guard.

“That’s true.”

“Then you must know some healing spells, right?”

Seeing Miao Miao Niya’s expectant look, Meng Linna understood.

So they were recruiting a healer here.

“I do know some. But don’t expect too much. I only know the basics.”

This was a lie.

In her past life as a regional bishop, Meng Linna mastered advanced healing spells.

But now, her magic power couldn’t support casting them.

Plus, she couldn’t explain how she learned them.

To avoid the Tribunal’s attention, it was better to pretend she knew nothing.

“No worries.”

“The stronger monsters in the dungeon have already been cleared.”

Miao Miao Niya waved her hand.

“So this job is yours!”

“Wait a sec.”

Meng Linna grabbed Miao Miao Niya’s hand.

“But this commission seems risky. We need to think it over…”

“Paid daily, one silver coin per day, meow.”

“We’ve thought it over. We’re definitely signing!”

Seeing Meng Linna’s quick change of heart, Miao Miao Niya raised her paw.

She smirked and chuckled.

“Then get ready fast, meow. We leave early tomorrow from here, meow.”

***

The next morning, the two met the leader of the survey team.

“Hello, I’m Elim, the geology team’s captain.”

Miss Elim was a typical hands-on scholar.

Her tanned skin showed she often did fieldwork.

“I’m Meng Linna, a D-rank faith warrior. This is Peggy, a magic swordswoman.”

“Nice to meet you both.”

“Xiao Meng’s the healer Miao Miao recommended, right? We’ll be relying on you for this trip!”

Though their ranks were low, Elim’s attitude didn’t change much.

This surprised Meng Linna.

She’d thought scholars were all arrogant types.

“I’ll do my best.”

Somehow, she was being led along by Elim.

Scholars really had their own skills.

Meng Linna glanced around, seeing most people had arrived.

She couldn’t help but ask, “When do we leave?”

“One more person hasn’t arrived. She’s our strongest fighter for this mission.”

Elim winked playfully at Meng Linna.

“She’s from the convent too, like Xiao Meng.”

“Convent?”

Meng Linna pictured a petite white-haired figure.

‘It couldn’t be…’

“Sorry, I’m a bit late.”

A familiar voice came from behind.

Meng Linna turned.

As expected, it was Na Naya.

“No worries, we haven’t waited long!”

Elim clapped her hands.

“Let’s head out!”

Their eyes met.

Meng Linna felt she should say something.

But her brain was slow, and she said nothing.

Missing the best moment to speak, there was no chance for conversation.

With everyone present, there was no need to linger in the hall.

The group loaded their luggage and boarded the waiting carriages outside the guild.

The team wasn’t large.

The so-called professional geology team was just Professor Elim and her three graduate students.

As for bodyguards, it was just the three who were supposed to form a team.

The group naturally split into two.

Professor Elim and her students took one carriage.

The three adventurers, meant to be teammates, took another.

Na Naya sat across from Meng Linna.

With no outsiders around, she crossed her legs.

She looked at Meng Linna with irritation.

“Are you doing this on purpose, Scumbag Sister?”

“Huh? On purpose?”

Already nervous and avoiding Na Naya’s gaze, Meng Linna fidgeted with her fingers.

Being rejected by Na Naya yesterday was bad enough.

Now working together on a commission was a huge challenge.

Seeing Meng Linna’s distracted state, Na Naya sighed lightly.

Then she explained, annoyed.

“You knew I took this commission. Did you take it on purpose?”

Before Meng Linna could respond, Peggy spoke up.

“We were just pressured by the receptionist to take it. We didn’t mean to.”

“I don’t know what happened between you two. But Miss Na Naya, please don’t make things hard for my teammate, okay?”

“Oh?”

Na Naya narrowed her eyes.

Her gaze shifted between the two.

“Looks like you two get along pretty well?”
