Listening to Bai Mengze’s words, Ji Wenyan immediately understood why she was so distraught.
It turned out she was thinking of her deceased parents.
“Yes, the doctor is very skilled,” Ji Wenyan murmured softly.
He raised a hand, gently patting Bai Mengze’s back, hoping to ease her pain.
He wished for her to stop crying.
“To come back and travel with me, they specifically worked overtime to finish their tasks,” Bai Mengze choked out. “They didn’t want to delay our plans again, but… it was precisely because of that that they had their accident. I wish… I wish I hadn’t let them come back. As long as they were safe.”
Bai Mengze’s body trembled uncontrollably as she wept. Ji Wenyan could clearly feel his clothes soaking through with her tears.
‘No wonder they say women are made of water,’ he mused. Despite how ferociously Bai Mengze fought when striking others, at this moment, she was fragile and weak, stirring a pang of pity in his heart.

The circumstances surrounding Bai Mengze’s parents’ deaths were truly unjust.
It hadn’t been a mere accident. Instead, a wealthy drunk driver had struck them, senselessly ending their lives.
If that were the only tragedy, Bai Mengze might not have been so utterly crushed. However, Liang Quan, the man responsible, showed no remorse after the incident.
He even gloated in front of Bai Mengze. Though his hands were stained with blood, he acted as if the fatal collision had never occurred.
Furthermore, he resorted to underhanded tactics against a high school girl like Bai Mengze. It was utterly despicable!
At this thought, Ji Wenyan’s impression of Liang Quan plummeted. He knew the man was nothing but trash.
Such individuals, who sullied the reputation of rich second-generations, deserved an early demise! He vowed that if their paths ever crossed again, he would ensure Liang Quan had a very unpleasant experience.
“Bai Mengze, this isn’t your fault at all!” Ji Wenyan declared firmly. “Your parents’ accident was entirely due to Liang Quan’s drunk driving; it has nothing to do with you! Don’t dwell on it so much. Instead, focus on slowly growing stronger now. Then, in the future, you can exact a hundredfold revenge!”
“Liang Quan… Yes,” Bai Mengze murmured, her voice laced with renewed resolve. “It’s all because of him that my parents died. I won’t let him live a good life!”
“Excellent, that’s the determination you need,” Ji Wenyan affirmed. “And you’ll have my help from now on!”
Confronted with Bai Mengze’s self-blame, Ji Wenyan refrained from offering empty platitudes or ‘chicken soup for the soul.’ He knew there was only one way to truly lift her spirits.
That was to drag out the person who had caused her such immense pain and utterly crush them. Only then could the knot of grief in her heart begin to unravel.
Therefore, making revenge against Liang Quan their shared objective was ideal.
It would not only resolve her inner turmoil but also provide Bai Mengze with a powerful motivation, preventing her from constantly falling into self-doubt.
Moreover, it would give him a legitimate reason to continue interacting with her. He wouldn’t just help Bai Mengze seek vengeance; he would also work to improve all her attributes.
‘Killing two birds with one stone,’ he thought. ‘I’m practically a genius!’
“Yes, I understand,” Bai Mengze finally spoke after a few minutes, once Ji Wenyan had finished. Her acknowledgment was brief.
She then gently pulled away from Ji Wenyan’s embrace, her red-rimmed eyes still glistening with unshed tears. Yet, her dark gaze now held an unwavering resolve.
It seemed to glow with a newfound inner fire.
Seeing this, Ji Wenyan’s expression momentarily froze in surprise. He hadn’t expected Bai Mengze to look like this.
He had imagined… that Bai Mengze, tear-streaked and weeping, would appear quite unsightly! But to his surprise, she was beautiful.
Her vulnerability, coupled with an underlying strength and an unyielding spirit, was incredibly captivating. Especially those obsidian-like eyes, shimmering like ripples on a lake, made it impossible for him to look away.
‘As expected of the one I chose to cultivate!’ he thought. ‘With such talent, becoming a goddess-tier beauty is only a matter of time!’
