To avoid seeming too deliberate, Na Naya tossed in other topics before pausing the conversation.

After chatting so long, asking about Meng Linna’s family should seem natural, right?

Just as Na Naya steeled herself to ask, Meng Linna, usually passive, spoke first.

“You’re actually talking to me today. I’m happy.”

The cautious blonde flashed a warm smile.

Na Naya froze for a moment.

Seeing her silence, Meng Linna pressed.

“Can I take it you want to make up?”

That snapped Na Naya back.

This woman had fooled her once.

No falling for it again.

Her face cooled.

“Sorry, I just wanted to understand what happened. Not forgiving you.”

“Oh.”

Meng Linna gave an awkward, bitter smile.

“My bad for assuming.”

Her humble look tugged at Na Naya’s heart.

Just for a second.

She deserved it, right?

But that fleeting pity reminded Na Naya of her goal.

She was supposed to get closer, convince Meng Linna to return to her family.

After that exchange, good luck with that.

Na Naya covered her face, annoyed at her impulsiveness.

***

Back in Yanan, it was nearly dinnertime.

Na Naya got off the carriage.

Meng Linna’s lukewarm goodbye left her unable to say what she wanted.

No deadline from the duke, anyway.

Comforting herself, Na Naya went home.

***

Meng Linna didn’t rush to her dorm.

She wandered the guild first.

Her long absence halted Marigold Potion sales.

Demand didn’t vanish, though.

A physician studied her potions, producing a weaker knockoff.

Cheaper, but less effective.

Now, Meng Linna stood before the biggest knockoff seller, slamming the table.

“Miss Miao Miao, copying my potion without permission and selling it under my brand? Doesn’t your conscience hurt?”

Caught red-handed, her pupils slit.

“My conscience aches. I’m so sorry, Little Meng, sob…”

“Cut the crap.”

Meng Linna held out her hand.

“Compensation. Licensing fees. Pay up.”

Guh!”

At the mention of money, Meowmeownia’s cat tail puffed up.

Seeing her reluctance, Meng Linna pressed.

“Don’t think I don’t know. Guild rules say a receptionist like you doing this gets fired.”

Cat girl trembled.

“Don’t scare me, you little adventurer…”

“Per guild employee code, section three, article forty-two…”

Before Meng Linna finished, Meowmeownia shoved a coin pouch at her.

“Sorry, Great Teacher Meng! My mistake! Please take this small sum!”

Meng Linna weighed the pouch.

Nice, over ten gold coins.

“That’s more like it.”

She tucked it into her belt, smiling.

“By the way, what’re Stone Fang and Kelly up to?”

“What do adventurers do? Work for the guild.”

Miao Miao flipped through the log.

“Exploration mission today. Should be back soon.”

Speak of the devil.

They burst through the guild doors.

“Here’s today’s map…

Great Teacher Meng, you’re back!”

Stone Fang, usually deadpan, lit up.

Without Meng Linna, she’d been stuck drawing maps.

Tough for a muscle-bound warrior.

“Yup, I’m back.”

Seeing familiar faces, Meng Linna relaxed.

“I knew you didn’t do anything bad They let you go unharmed.”

“Of course.”

Meng Linna nodded, keeping her Flame Giant fight quiet.

The church tightly controlled such heresy news.

“Adventure tomorrow?”

“Definitely.”

With plans set, Meng Linna returned to her dorm.

***

(Flashback)

“Sister Meng Linna, come out.”

A stern monk appeared at the door.

Na Naya’s heart sank.

They were after Sister Meng Linna again.

Half a month ago, Meng Linna started acting out, wanting to leave the monastery.

Like eating pork on fasting day.

She’d done it before, but secretly.

This time, she openly ate pork, arguing with the dean that pigs were aquatic, so pork wasn’t meat. (TN: I don’t even know how that argument would work)

She even stole Na Naya’s panties from the clothesline.

They were close enough to just ask.

Did she need to steal?

Was she that broke?

Young Na Naya didn’t get it.

She only knew Meng Linna was often scolded by the dean lately.

For such blasphemous acts, any other nun would’ve been expelled.

But Meng Linna?

Nothing happened.

She was the Meng family’s heiress.

This monastery was practically Meng property.

For some reason, Italy and thus the Catholic Church considered fish to not be meat, thus the rule were stretched to allow aquatic mammals like beaver. Pigs definitely aren’t aquatic though.
