Chapter 53: The Price of Perfection

Under a brilliant Sunday sky, the amusement park hummed with a vibrant energy. Colorful flags fluttered in the breeze, while the air resonated with the joyous laughter of children and the thrilling roars of its many attractions.

Jin and Xia Yue, however, moved through this festive scene like anomalies. They adhered strictly to Xia Yue’s meticulously crafted ‘Amusement Park Optimal Experience Guide V1.2,’ a plan so precise it accounted for every minute of their visit.

‘According to the guide, our next destination is the Rapid River Ride,’ Xia Yue announced, her voice as precise as if delivering a military briefing. ‘The queue is projected to be at its absolute minimum park-wide, ensuring peak efficiency for our experience.’

In her hands, a tablet displayed a dynamically updating park map alongside a wealth of data. Though she still wore the somewhat incongruous sweet-style dress, her expression had already sharpened, shifting into a familiar, work-focused intensity.

Trailing behind Xia Yue, Jin observed her friend meticulously execute the self-imposed itinerary. A complex cocktail of emotions swirled within her.

They had already conquered the Roller Coaster, where Xia Yue impassively logged every shift in gravitational acceleration. Next came the Pirate Ship, prompting her analysis of the swing cycle’s physiological impact, followed by the Carousel, where she diligently assessed the artistic merit of each sculpted animal and its potential influence on children’s aesthetic development.

With every attraction, Xia Yue invariably discovered an angle for ‘optimization’ or ‘analysis.’ Yet, through it all, one crucial element remained conspicuously absent: the simple joy of ‘playing.’

‘Xia Yue,’ Jin ventured, her voice a hesitant plea, as they disembarked from the Rapid River Ride, both of them somewhat damp. ‘Could we… perhaps… deviate a little? Not adhere so strictly to the guide?’

Xia Yue halted her meticulous cleaning of her glasses, her gaze turning to Jin, filled with palpable confusion. ‘Spontaneous?’ she questioned. ‘The guide, after all, is formulated using big data analysis and optimal path algorithms. Its purpose is to ensure we maximize attractions within our limited timeframe and eliminate unproductive waiting.’

‘To act ‘spontaneously’ would inevitably lead to inefficiency, thereby failing to achieve our optimal experience objective.’

Jin was speechless. Meeting Xia Yue’s earnest gaze, she silently swallowed the retort forming on her tongue: ‘But playing isn’t meant to be about efficiency.’

True to form, they proceeded to several more attractions with methodical precision. Xia Yue never once wavered from her acute ‘efficiency consciousness.’

Even when Jin expressed a desire for ice cream, Xia Yue would swiftly call up queue times and cost-benefit analyses for nearby vendors. ‘This particular stall boasts the shortest wait,’ she would declare, pointing, ‘and this brand of ice cream offers the relatively optimal ratio of milk fat and additives.’

As Jin held the ‘optimally’ chosen ice cream, she couldn’t shake the feeling that even its taste had become rigidly formulaic.

As dusk deepened, the amusement park ignited with a dazzling display of lights, imbuing the clamor with a touch of dreamlike magic. Jin, feeling a pull, finally halted her steps.

She gazed upward at the colossal Ferris wheel, which revolved with unhurried grace. Its vibrant gondolas, like luminous pearls, studded the deepening twilight, creating a serene and romantic tableau.

‘Xia Yue,’ Jin murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, laced with an almost imperceptible plea. ‘Could we… ride that?’ She gestured towards the Ferris wheel.

Xia Yue’s gaze tracked Jin’s finger. Her brows immediately drew together in a familiar furrow as her fingers swiftly navigated the tablet’s screen. ‘The Ferris wheel?’ she began, a hint of disapproval in her tone. ‘Data indicates a single cycle for this attraction takes approximately fifteen minutes, with an estimated twenty-five-minute queue.’

‘During that forty-minute window, we could experience at least two other attractions boasting shorter wait times and significantly higher thrill factors, such as the adjacent Crazy Mouse and Haunted House. The Ferris wheel’s ‘pleasure output ratio per unit time’ is demonstrably low, rendering it an inefficient choice. According to the guide, we are slated to—’

‘Let’s just ride this one,’ Jin interjected, her voice soft but imbued with a rare, unwavering persistence. She turned to face Xia Yue, her eyes holding a complex plea. ‘Just for a little while, can’t we?’

Xia Yue’s carefully articulated words abruptly ceased. Her gaze shifted from Jin’s eyes to the slowly ascending Ferris wheel—an attraction she inherently viewed as a pure ‘waste of time’ through her efficiency-driven lens.

Then, her eyes dropped to the cold, relentlessly optimizing data flickering across her tablet. It was as if her core processing unit had encountered a command utterly resistant to logical parsing.

[Target has expressed a strong, unambiguous desire.]

[This desire conflicts with the principle of maximum efficiency.]

[Core directive: Prioritize fulfilling target’s needs to enhance relational intimacy.]

[Conflict resolution: …?]

After a brief, charged silence, Xia Yue’s fingers finally lifted from the tablet screen. She raised her head, and for a fleeting instant, a flicker of what might have been ‘compromise’ crossed her icy blue eyes. It was, however, swiftly subsumed by the resolute determination of ‘executing a new directive.’

‘…Very well,’ she conceded, tucking away her tablet. ‘We shall ride the Ferris wheel.’

As the Ferris wheel’s gondola slowly ascended from the ground, the clamor and dazzling lights of the park receded beneath them. Within the confined space, a peculiar stillness settled.

Only the low, rhythmic hum of the machinery broke the silence, alongside the almost palpable, unspoken tension between the two women.

Xia Yue remained rigidly upright, her hands clasped precisely on her knees. Her gaze pierced through the glass window, fixed on the distant city skyline, as if she were still subconsciously dissecting the architectural layout and light pollution within her field of vision.

Jin, meanwhile, watched the panorama of the night unfurl beyond their window. The amusement park below had shrunk into a tiny, luminous, dreamlike diorama, while the distant city lights shimmered like scattered constellations.

A profound sense of tranquility, at long last, temporarily dispersed the weariness and stifling pressure that had relentlessly pursued her throughout the day, all in the name of ‘efficiency.’

She drew a deep breath, then slowly turned her head. Her gaze settled on the figure opposite her, who remained taut and unyielding even in this moment of presumed relaxation.

‘Xia Yue,’ Jin uttered, her voice a mere whisper, yet it resonated with startling clarity within the hushed gondola.

Xia Yue instantly retracted her gaze from the distant cityscape, her attention snapping to Jin. Her posture subtly stiffened, becoming even more rigidly upright, as though bracing for a critical directive.

Jin observed Xia Yue’s ready-to-‘problem-solve’ demeanor, and a fresh wave of guilt washed over her. She pressed her lips together, carefully formulating her words.

‘I’m sorry.’

Xia Yue froze, utterly taken aback. Her pupils constricted almost imperceptibly, and a distinct flicker of confusion marred her features. ‘Why apologize?’ she questioned, her voice tinged with genuine bewilderment.

‘While today’s itinerary, influenced by the Ferris wheel, didn’t quite reach the guide’s projected peak efficiency, the overall completion rate remains within acceptable parameters. Perhaps the flaw lies within my own meticulously crafted guide, for failing to adequately account for your—’

‘No, it’s not about that,’ Jin interjected, shaking her head gently. She met Xia Yue’s icy blue eyes, which, in their confusion, seemed strikingly pure. Summoning her courage, Jin confessed, ‘I’m apologizing for… for the words I spoke before.’

She paused, her voice dropping to a near whisper, laden with deep regret. ‘At that time… I never intended for you to become like this.’

Xia Yue’s body visibly stiffened.

Jin pressed on, her words tumbling out, somewhat disarrayed, yet undeniably from the heart. ‘I never wanted a Xia Yue who… based everything on my standards, sacrificing her own thoughts and preferences. Nor did I wish to see you… compel yourself to wear clothes you disliked, or undertake tasks you weren’t adept at.’

‘Even your speech seems to be a constant calculation of my preferences.’

She lifted her head, bravely meeting Xia Yue’s unwavering gaze. ‘When I spoke those words then… I simply wished… for you to occasionally… treat me as an equal, someone capable of genuine dialogue, rather than a program requiring an ‘optimal solution’ for every interaction.’

‘What I truly longed to see was… the authentic you. Even if that authentic self is a little cold, a little distant, that is still Xia Yue, after all.’

A faint catch entered Jin’s voice. ‘Seeing you this way now… it truly pains me,’ she admitted, her eyes shimmering. ‘I feel… it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have uttered those words, pushing you to become like this…’

As her words faded, a profound and lingering silence settled over the gondola.

The Ferris wheel had now ascended to its zenith. The world below seemed to have been muted, its vibrant clamor replaced by the silent, shimmering cascade of dazzling lights.

Xia Yue remained utterly motionless, her head bowed low. Her silver-white hair cascaded forward, completely obscuring her expression. Jin could only discern the slight, inward curl of Xia Yue’s fingers, resting still upon her knees.

A protracted silence stretched between them, so extensive that Jin began to believe Xia Yue would never speak again. Then, at last, Xia Yue murmured in a voice so faint it was almost swallowed by the low thrum of the machinery:

‘The real… me?’

Her voice carried an unprecedented, profound bewilderment, a vast emptiness.

She had always believed that by correcting errors and fulfilling the other’s needs, the objective would be met. She had painstakingly learned to imitate, to transform herself, even to suppress her inherent nature, all because Jin had once expressed a desire for ‘equal treatment’ and the ‘feeling of being needed.’

Yet now, Jin was telling her that everything she had done was wrong? That becoming ‘unlike herself’ was, in fact, the problem?

This outcome lay entirely beyond the scope of her logical comprehension.

If the fundamental directive of ‘fulfilling the target’s needs’ was flawed… then how, precisely, was she supposed to proceed?

The bedrock principles she had relied upon for so long crumbled around her. For the very first time, Xia Yue felt a panic akin to ‘being utterly lost.’

She lifted her head, her gaze finding Jin’s. In her icy blue eyes, there was no longer the usual composure or deliberate softness. Instead, they brimmed with a childlike helplessness and… a subtle, almost imperceptible vulnerability.

‘I don’t understand…’ she whispered, a trace of unfamiliar grievance in her voice. ‘What, then… is the correct way?’
