Part One
At noon, the scorching sun bakes the streets, punctuated by the intermittent chirping of cicadas.
Japan’s summer is nearing its end, and even the insects seem to be running out of steam.
A silver-haired girl rolls over on the floor, haphazardly wiping drool from her mouth. Like a caterpillar, she wriggles from the sunlit patch streaming into the room to the cool breeze of the air conditioner.
The sunlight’s so intense that even in the AC, she’s sweating buckets.
“Phew…” Her long lashes flutter as the petite girl raises a pale arm, gently scratching her cheek with a delicate nail. After some effort, her ruby-red, gem-like eyes finally open.
Paired with her flawless face, she looks like a fragile, exquisite doll.
Her unfocused gaze settles on the unfamiliar ceiling, sleepiness slowly fading.
She tugs at her oversized men’s shirt, scratching her navel, then touches her toes, sniffing them—clean, not smelly, almost sweet.
A dull ache in her abdomen snaps her back to reality, reminding her she’s been a girl for over half a month.
“Ha… ugh… I want cola…” Cola yawns widely, dragging herself up.
Same routine as always—wash up, clean the place. But today, there’s an extra task: changing her sanitary pad.
The damp stickiness is just too uncomfortable otherwise…
By the time everything’s done, it’s past 12:30.
Sitting at the low table, she sips the tea Liuli brewed yesterday. It’s cold now, but still tasty. In this heat, hot tea’s the last thing she wants.
Since becoming a girl and making friends, Cola’s morning phone routine has shifted from checking QQ to LINE.
The pinned chat is, of course, the band group.
To keep things fair, all four members have admin rights, so the group name often changes slightly overnight.
Today’s name: “Writing Lyrics Today Too?”
No idea who changed it, but it feels like a jab at Liuli.
“Probably Byakuya’s doing? Just a joke, I bet…” Cola mutters, opening the chat and scrolling through today’s messages.
Mahong Byakuya, the chattiest, loves sharing photos or funny videos. Today, she’s extra hyped, spamming dozens of messages about the Maebashi Fireworks Festival—start time, location, and her excited ramblings.
When no one replies, she resorts to emoji spam. You can almost picture her pouting.
“Morning,” Cola types.
Byakuya replies instantly, like she’s been glued to her phone: “Captain! You’re finally up!!”
“Why’re you calling me Captain…”
“Everyone’s probably asleep. I’m so bored talking to myself!”
“You? Bored?”
“Forget that—fireworks festival, you going?”
“A festival, huh.”
“Yup, yup!”
“But I’ve got work with Liuli tonight.”
“Just take the night off!”
“I took yesterday off. Back-to-back’s not great…”
“Didn’t you get the message? Natsuki-nee said we’re closed today.”
“Little Liuli’s awake too!”
“I just woke up,” Liuli chimes in.
Even in text, Cola can sense Liuli’s guilty tone—probably dodging Byakuya’s enthusiasm by staying silent.
“Festival? You going, Liuli?”
“What about you, Cola…?”
“If there’s no work, I’m in.”
“How’s your body? Still hurting?”
“A bit.”
“Cola’s sick? You okay? No problem, right!?”
“Fine, fine, just that monthly thing,” Cola sends an Ayanami Rei covered-in-bandages emoji.
“Then you gotta eat yakisoba!”
“Huh?”
“Yakisoba makes you feel better!”
“Ha—?”
“Fireworks festivals call for yakisoba, right?”
“Your brain jumps too fast…”
“Festival yakisoba’s different from regular yakisoba! It’ll cheer you up, and you won’t feel bad!”
“Got it…”
“Meet up tonight? Where?” Yuki Matsuhisa, usually lurking, pops in.
“Little Yuki’s going too! Awesome, full band meetup!”
“Maybe I’ll get some lyric inspiration…” Liuli adds.
Cola snickers, screenshotting the group name and sending it.
Byakuya copies it, reposting.
Surprisingly, even serious Yuki joins in, reposting like a “repeater.”
“Haven’t written…” Liuli sends a pitiful emoji, followed by a long, keigo-heavy apology, basically “super, super, super sorry.”
“The more you stress, the harder it is to write. It’s fine,” Cola comforts.
“Inspiration comes anytime, no problem!” Byakuya adds.
“If you don’t finish before summer break ends…” Yuki reverts to her usual deadpan seriousness.
Liuli responds with a dogeza emoji.
“When do we meet?”
“4 p.m. at Cola’s place, downstairs?” Byakuya suggests.
“Works for me,” Yuki replies.
“I’m good too… My place is close to Cola’s…” Liuli says.
“Fine,” Cola agrees.
“Fireworks festival, huh…” Cola stretches, locking her phone. “First, gotta find something to eat…”
Part Two
Cola steps out, wandering aimlessly down a small street.
Flanked by houses, she has no real destination—just hoping to stumble on a hidden eatery.
It’s her first time trying this in Japan.
Even if she finds nothing, the search itself is fun—the thrill of the unknown.
“Oh, a shaved ice shop… But ice might make my stomach worse. Nah, forget it…” She eyes a shop tucked in a house, licking her lips.
Even with an umbrella, the blazing sun makes her swelter. A plain shaved ice, no toppings, would hit the spot.
“Want ice so bad…” she mutters, smacking her lips.
“Hey! Isn’t that Cola?!” A thrilled voice calls from the corner.
Looking up, she sees a blonde girl with flowing hair running toward her—Byakuya.
“Yo, Byakuya, out in this sun?”
“You’re out here too!”
“I’ve got an umbrella.”
“I’m looking for food.”
“Really? Thought you’d eat at home or hit some fancy restaurant…”
“Nah, alley shops are more interesting! I’m wandering to find something good!”
“Huh, guess we’re on the same page.”
“See? Small shops in alleys have stories, real life vibes!”
“Find any good spots yet?”
“Nope. You checked over there?”
“Kinda—wanna head that way? Might find something.”
“OK~! Wait, wait!” Byakuya grabs Cola’s shirt hem. “Selfie first!”
“For what…”
“To mark our random meetup! Bumping into each other without planning—doesn’t that feel awesome?”
She raises her phone, snapping a pic of them under the blazing sun.
“Pfft, little Cola closed her eyes!”
“Sun’s too bright…”
“No biggie, it’s cute like this! Super adorable—I’m sending it to the group!” Before Cola can respond, Byakuya posts it with a cutesy kaomoji.
“Met the Captain on a food hunt!”
“Out in this sun, you okay?” Yuki asks instantly.
“Got an umbrella, I’m fine…”
“Take care of yourself.”
“I know my limits.”
“Eh, where are you guys?” Liuli asks.
“No clue, just wandered for 30-40 minutes without a map,” Cola replies.
“We’re hunting for a hidden gem eatery in the alleys!” Byakuya adds.
“You eaten, Liuli?”
“At home… Should’ve gone with you guys.”
“You’d starve with us—we haven’t found a place yet,” Cola says.
“We’ll find one!” Byakuya insists.
Part Three
It’s hot, but Byakuya enthusiastically links arms with Cola, dragging her forward.
There’s no sense of distance with her—sometimes too close, too eager.
If Liuli only gets this excited about her passions, Byakuya’s like this all the time, her energy boundless.
“Found it! Cola, look! This place!”
“Huh? Oh?” Dizzy from the heat, Cola squints, then Byakuya gently turns her head.
“This way!”
It’s an old, modest one-story house, maybe 20-30 square meters. A white wooden sign reads “Veggie Kushiage,” with smaller text noting dine-in options.
“Kushiage, huh…”
“All-veggie kushiage! Sounds unique!”
“Let’s try it. Hope it’s not too pricey.”
“I just hope they’ve got AC.”
“Same…”
