“Nothing happened!”

Meng Linna shook her head, flustered.

She did like Na Naya’s, and little Na Naya was pretty.

But their relationship wasn’t that close.

‘Haha, come on.’

‘Was I really expecting her to do something?’

Na Naya just smiled, saying nothing.

The topic had gotten too heated.

Silence fell again.

They focused on their desserts.

“No follow-through?”

The evil fire god’s voice rang in Na Naya’s mind.

“Why not do something bold with her?”

“I’m a decent person.”

Na Naya replied mentally, face stern.

To Meng Linna, the white-haired loli eating dessert suddenly looked serious, even angry.

The blonde sweated nervously.

“Uh, you okay?”

Anyone would tense up at that expression.

Seeing Meng Linna’s panic, Na Naya realized her emotions had shown too much.

She quickly explained.

“No, just thinking about something important.”

“Oh?”

Meng Linna raised a brow but didn’t pry.

‘Must be saintess candidate stuff.’

‘Best not disturb her.’

She stood to leave.

“Well, then I’ll—”

Na Naya stopped her.

“Wait.”

“It’s about you.”

“Me?”

Meng Linna pointed at herself.

“For real?”

Perfect chance to probe Meng Linna for the duke.

Na Naya spoke thoughtfully.

“You know your father’s my main backer for saintess candidate. I have to consider his feelings. Meet his reasonable requests.”

Meng Linna nodded.

“Mm.”

She wasn’t a kid.

Having been a bishop in her past life, she knew church politics.

Many bishops rose with noble backing—like herself back then.

Some were nobles with fiefs.

Her father backed Na Naya partly to clean up her mess.

But sponsoring a saintess candidate was a good investment.

Plus, the Meng family held leverage over Na Naya.

But what use was a saintess candidate?

No authority over a diocese.

No power for reforms.

Meng Linna couldn’t imagine what her father wanted Na Naya to do.

“Your father asked me to check. You really don’t want to return to your family?”

“Huh?”

Na Naya’s words caught Meng Linna off guard.

Expected, yet not.

Na Naya, a peer, was perfect to probe her stance.

But to Na Naya, Meng Linna’s shock meant something else.

She gestured for calm.

“Just asking. Your father and I aren’t forcing you. He was mad about your actions, but that’s it. Kicking you out minimized the fallout. If you return, nothing changes. You’re still the Meng family’s youngest daughter.”

Funny coming from Na Naya, the one most hurt by Meng Linna’s actions.

But it was true.

If bullying a saintess candidate didn’t risk huge backlash, Meng Ming wouldn’t have exiled his precious daughter.

Meng Linna’s face darkened.

“Nothing changes? Then what’s the point?”

‘Are you kidding?’

She’d bullied Na Naya, risking criminal status, to escape her bishop fate.

Now her father wanted her back as a regional bishop?

No way she’d agree.

Na Naya was confused.

“You’re unhappy with your dad?”

Realizing it was Na Naya, not her father, Meng Linna softened.

Her irritation lingered in her eyes.

“I can’t say if my dad’s a good person. But he’s a good father, literally and socially.”

“Then why…”

Meng Linna waved her off.

“But he’s too good. Like arranging your saintess path. He planned my life from nun to cardinal. If he had his way, I’d be pope by fifty.”

“Pope…”

Even Na Naya hummed softly.

“So you don’t want to be pope?”

It sounded far-off, but as the empire’s top duke, Meng Ming could make it happen.

Meng Linna shook her head firmly.

“Not the life I want. Hard pass.”

Her reason was vague but resolute, as if it carried weight.

‘I can’t say I’ve lived it.’

‘Being a bishop’s a dead end.’

Na Naya didn’t know where to start with that.

She wanted to call it nonsense.

But Meng Linna’s seriousness made her hesitate.

“Fine.”

Na Naya gave in.

“If you don’t want to, that’s that. I’ll tell the duke your stance.”

Meng Linna exhaled, leaning back.

“Thanks.”

Na Naya stayed serious.

“Thanking me’s premature. Your father will definitely keep pushing me to persuade you.”

“Welcome anytime, then?”

“Heh.”

Task done, no need to say more.

Next steps depended on the duke’s reaction.

Honestly, even if becoming bishop didn’t lead to death, she would of still abandoned that path.
