Chapter 65: Assault on Yunxi Village

“Teams, has anyone detected any anomalies in your current areas?” Agent Guan’s voice came through the radio to Kexin. At this moment, Agent Guan was in the command center inside the Air Force base.

In front of her, multiple screens were transmitting real-time surveillance footage from satellites and drones. Behind her, agents and officers from different departments were discussing the details of the operation.

Although only the magical girls were directly participating in frontline combat, a considerable amount of resources had still been mobilized to support this mission.

To coordinate with the operation, the Air Force had even dispatched multiple fighter jets carrying special bombs to patrol the skies. If necessary, the entire Yunxi Village could be completely obliterated.

“Team A reporting, the site is very quiet… unnaturally so,” Kexin’s voice carried a hint of doubt as her eyes scanned the surrounding forest, wary of a possible ambush.

Agent Guan frowned slightly. “Explain the situation in detail.”

“Normally, Delta-2 level abnormal beings should have some perception ability, especially toward human targets. Even without using magic, nothing should have happened so far,” Kexin reported, while using her binoculars’ range-finding function to observe the village just a short distance away.

They were now only two hundred meters from the village. They could storm it at any moment if they wanted.

This was indeed unexpected.

Agent Guan’s gaze fixed on the drone footage as she fell into thought.

According to prior simulations, the magical girls would be quickly detected by the abnormal beings once they approached the village. In some simulations, the abnormals even actively attacked.

So why was the target still showing no reaction?

As Kexin awaited further instructions, Neko-saki’s voice came over the squad channel: “Kexin, Senior Bai reports they are in position and ready to attack anytime, meow.”

“Understood,” Kexin pressed the communication button and quietly replied.

Almost simultaneously, Team B, led by Qisi, also sent a signal indicating they were ready.

Their location was over a kilometer from the village in a straight line, but they clearly had a better vantage point and line of fire.

All teams were in position; now they only had to wait for the command from the command center.

“Agent Guan, shall we proceed according to the original plan?” Kexin asked.

Her voice pulled Agent Guan back to reality. As the operation commander, she had to make a decision.

“Proceed as planned,” Agent Guan said, glancing at the electronic clock on the wall. “Everyone, note: in five minutes, magical usage restrictions will be lifted. Team C will commence the attack at exactly 10:30.”

“Copy.” Bai Xihan immediately confirmed.

Once the command was confirmed, Kexin relayed it to her team. A five-minute countdown had begun; when it reached zero, they would strike. From that point, what would happen after transforming would only be known by entering the battlefield.

However, just as the countdown neared its end, Qisi’s urgent warning sounded in Kexin’s ear: “Kexin, a large number of insect-like abnormal beings are approaching from your 12 o’clock direction!”

“What?! Where did they come from?”

Kexin raised her gun and saw that the previously calm fields were now teeming with huge insect swarms moving at a shocking speed toward them.

“Ugh~ what are these things? So disgusting,” Yan Luofi grimaced. It was her first time seeing so many insect-type abnormal beings, and her disgust was palpable.

“Everyone, transform immediately!” Kexin decisively gave the order, replacing the rear command.

As she prepared to activate her transformation device, a mantis-like abnormal wielding two sharp sickles charged toward her. She fired a short burst from her rifle, but the bullets barely had an effect—the mantis paused momentarily and continued its attack.

“Just as expected…” This outcome didn’t surprise Kexin. She quickly released her rifle and pressed the button on her watch-like transformation device.

A dazzling light enveloped her body, replacing her human form with a body constructed entirely from magical energy. Her tactical gear vanished, stored in a special subspace, replaced by a standard magical girl combat uniform styled after a school uniform, reminiscent of an idol performance outfit.

The others had already transformed as well.

Those who joined the Special Investigation Bureau around the same time as Kexin wore standard combat uniforms, with slight differences in details and colors.

Lo Anying and Yan Luofi had completely customized styles, available only to B-rank magical girls.

Lo Anying’s uniform was a sleek blue-black suit with a sci-fi vibe, paired with a futuristic sniper rifle—she looked like she had wandered off a sci-fi set.

Yan Luofi transformed into a more traditional magical girl: pink hair, a pink-and-white Lolita-style combat dress, wielding an auto-loading crossbow.

The command center immediately detected the magical energy signatures of the transformations, realizing the devices had been activated prematurely, signaling that something had gone wrong.

Agent Guan quickly inquired, “Kexin, what happened?”

“We encountered a sudden situation. Insect-type abnormal beings are attacking. Situation is under control; we are clearing them,” Kexin reported, while summoning her magical girl weapon—a magic-enhanced HK416 assault rifle.

Pink-glowing crystal-like nodes on the rifle stored magical energy, allowing bullets to be automatically enchanted when fired. The attached scope integrated detection systems that could assess threats and display results on her tactical visor.

The massive insects before them were all Beta-level. Normally, only one Beta-level creature would appear in a large city every few days.

Kexin adjusted her predicted bullet impact point and fired. The bullets traced pink arcs, tiny as peanuts, but hit the insects precisely, tearing holes in their torsos.

The insects’ small magical cores shattered into fragments, and their bodies, deprived of magical energy, quickly dissolved into puddles of disgusting goo.

Crossfire from the six magical girls quickly suppressed the first wave of attacks, but more insects emerged from the ground.

“Captain Xia, are these the Mother Corpse’s puppet monsters?” Tang Yuan asked, firing at the approaching insects.

As a newcomer, she noticed the anomaly: Beta-level insects were weak but unnervingly numerous.

“They’re likely just testing us,” Kexin guessed.

The large-scale operation to seal off Yunxi Village had been underway for some time. Even the media speculated about what was happening.

Most abnormal beings wouldn’t consider humans threats, but they also wouldn’t send so many weak creatures at once. If an ordinary team faced this, they would have been wiped out.

The suppression of the insects, however, sent the opposite message to the abnormals: these intruders were dangerous.

Kexin realized that the abnormal beings likely already knew about the magical girls’ operation.

“Testing… meaning they know our intentions,” Tang Yuan quickly understood Kexin’s inference.

As if confirming Kexin’s speculation, Agent Guan reported: “Kexin, drones detected numerous magical energy signatures within the village, over a hundred in total. Threat levels above Beta, with some reaching Gamma.”

The holographic tactical map on Kexin’s visor lit up with red markers, moving rapidly toward the village outskirts.

The target was clear.

Gamma-level abnormal beings, while only one rank above Beta, were a significant qualitative leap. For most rookie magical girls, taking down a single Gamma-level alone would be challenging.

Kexin speculated that the abnormals had sensed a certain threat from the magical girls.

“Still no position on the main abnormal?”

The suspected Mother Corpse was likely Delta-2 level or higher—not something Gamma-level could confront.

Kexin fired a magic-enhanced grenade at the cluster of insects. The explosion left no crater but cleared all Beta-level creatures within a twenty-meter radius. However, more insects quickly filled the void, rendering the effort somewhat futile.

She reloaded and glanced toward the village, where the villagers had transformed into zombie-like abnormals. They rushed out from all exits at speeds that would make an Olympic sprinter despair, even crawling close to the ground.

After clearing most of the insect-type abnormals, Kexin zoomed her scope on the zombies. Unlike the policemen they had previously seen, these zombies had no intact skin, appearing as mere skin-and-bone figures—more like ghouls than zombies.

“Team C has engaged, beginning the attack.”

Team C, now at the village entrance, fired colorful magical projectiles. Limbs and heads of the zombies were instantly destroyed, but the creatures’ durability was higher than the insects’. Even when dismembered, they continued crawling as if following irresistible orders.

“Seems they can’t resist after all,” Kexin smiled slightly. A magical being must be commanding the minions inside the village.

The attacked zombies quickly reacted, turning toward Team C amidst a heavy barrage, but the frontlines were shredded almost immediately.

The zombies received new orders and began burrowing underground, disappearing within seconds.

From a higher vantage point, Kexin saw the underground paths rising like bulging veins on the ground.

“They’re burrowing underground, meow,” Neko-saki noted, switching her weapon to a large hammer, ready to engage.

“Focus on our mission. Maintain formation and advance,” Kexin instructed, leading Team A carefully over the debris. While magical bodies don’t retain dirt after transforming back, stepping on the residue would be disgusting.

Using detection spells to scan the ground for remaining abnormals, they reached rooftops at the village outskirts.

No one preferred walking through the village’s maze-like streets at ground level.

Kexin checked Team C again; all six had left the ground. The zombies surfaced only to find them gone.

“Don’t forget, magical girls can fly,” Bai Xihan said, transforming her weapon into a water-gun-like launcher. She sprayed a thick orange-yellow substance on the ground, slowing the zombies down like glue.

Kexin observed her practical magical bombardment. Soon, only a few Gamma-level abnormals remained near the village center.

The two teams regrouped, keeping tens of meters apart, cautiously approaching the village center. As the encirclement tightened, there was still no sign of the main abnormal.

“No Delta-level magical signatures detected yet,” Agent Guan reminded them.

Still hiding? Kexin gripped her weapon tightly. After all that preparation, the main abnormal had yet to make a move. What kind of creature were they dealing with?
