The alarm by Su Cheng’s pillow had already gone off twice, and her roommates were all awake, but she was still fast asleep.
“Hey, hey, Little Orange, aren’t you getting up? You want to be punished with running laps?”
Chen Xi’s voice pierced through Su Cheng’s muddled consciousness like a morning alarm clock, as she simultaneously tapped the side of Su Cheng’s bed, trying to wake her up.
Su Cheng groggily opened her eyes, looking like she hadn’t gotten enough sleep, and rolled onto her back, saying lazily, “Mmm, what time is it?”
“It’s 6:10! The sun’s already up! We only have twenty minutes, so you’d better get up quickly.”
“Alright, alright, I’m up, I’m up…” a low, raspy voice replied.
Both Chen Xi and Sun Xiaochen felt that something was off with Su Cheng.
Su Cheng listlessly climbed out of bed. On any other day, she would have bounced up like a spring.
But today, her limbs felt as if they were filled with lead, and every movement was slow and laborious.
After climbing down from the bed, Su Cheng’s head spun, and she had to lean against the wall for a moment to feel better.
She couldn’t tell if it was because of a lack of sleep or the cold.
Her throat felt like it was stuffed with a cotton ball, and a sharp pain shot through it every time she swallowed.
Su Cheng had taken medicine immediately after returning to the dorm last night, but she still woke up this morning with a feverish head, the discomfort even more pronounced than yesterday.
“Little Orange, you look terrible,” Chen Xi, already fully dressed and tying her hair in front of the mirror, looked worriedly at Su Cheng’s pale face in the reflection. “Do you want to ask the instructor for a day off?”
“No need,” Su Cheng shook her head, her voice as hoarse as if it had been scraped with sandpaper. “I’m fine.”
She slowly changed into her camouflage uniform.
Every button was fastened with extra care.
In the mirror, she saw faint dark circles under her eyes and a deathly pale face.
Su Cheng stared at her reflection and silently told herself, ‘I have to hold on.’
In the washroom, the cold water splashing on her face made her shiver.
When she looked up, water droplets trickled down her cheeks like silent tears.
Su Cheng stared at herself in the mirror, her gaze gradually becoming determined.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.”
When Su Cheng finished washing up, Chen Xi and Sun Xiaochen were surprisingly waiting for her.
“Little Orange, are you really okay?”
Chen Xi asked, a hint of worry in her eyes.
Su Cheng shook her head and took a sip of water to soothe her throat, like a rusty gear being nourished with lubricating oil.
“I’m fine, just a little tired. Let’s go.”
“If you’re not feeling well, we can help you ask for leave,” Sun Xiaochen suggested.
Su Cheng refused again, forcing a smile, “I’m really fine, don’t worry.”
Their persuasion fruitless, Sun Xiaochen and Chen Xi accompanied Su Cheng to the training grounds.
On the field, the glaring morning sun had just begun to spill across the ground, as if yesterday’s rain had never happened.
Most of the students were already in formation, with only a few stragglers arriving at the last minute.
Su Cheng jogged to her place in the line, and just as she steadied herself, the instructor’s loud voice rang out.
Today’s morning drill had thus begun.
“We’ll start with a two-lap jog to warm up.”
The moment the instructor finished speaking, Su Cheng’s face contorted in agony.
She was already feeling unwell, and now she had to do high-intensity running.
But this was her own choice.
‘You chose this, Su Cheng.’
Su Cheng’s steps were heavy. Before she had even finished half a lap with the main group, her face and back were already drenched in cold sweat.
“Chengcheng, are you alright? You don’t look well.”
Lin Shiyue had noticed Su Cheng’s unusual state long ago and had been running beside her to prevent any accidents.
“I’m… I’m fine, just a little tired.”
A slightly hoarse voice escaped Su Cheng’s lips, and Lin Shiyue’s eyes widened in surprise.
Su Cheng tried to regulate her breathing, but found that no matter what, she couldn’t satisfy her body’s demand for oxygen.
“You haven’t been running for long, why is your face so red? Are you not feeling well?”
Lin Shiyue had hit the nail on the head, and Su Cheng gave an awkward smile.
“A little bit.”
“If you’re not feeling well, you should stop running and ask for leave.”
Su Cheng shook her head, gritted her teeth, and continued to push forward.
“I have to at least last until the morning drill is over.”
Su Cheng didn’t want Lin Shiyue to worry too much, so she quickened her pace.
If she collapsed here, Yin Xuelian would very likely act just like she did yesterday.
She definitely didn’t want that.
Seeing Su Cheng insist on running, Lin Shiyue had no choice but to match her pace and run by her side.
Fortunately, Su Cheng managed to persevere and complete the two laps without any incidents.
Standing in the formation, sweat trickled down Su Cheng’s spine, soaking her camouflage uniform to the point where it felt like it could drip water.
Her legs began to tremble uncontrollably, and the scene before her eyes flickered between clear and blurry.
But she bit her lower lip hard, using the pain to stay conscious, and held on until the morning drill was over.
“Dismissed.”
Su Cheng let out a sigh of relief. Her body deflated like a punctured ball, collapsing uncontrollably.
Lin Shiyue had been prepared for Su Cheng’s condition and took a step forward, steadily catching her.
“Chengcheng, what’s wrong?”
Lin Shiyue shook Su Cheng worriedly.
Su Cheng forced a smile, “I’m out of strength. Thank you, Shiyue.”
“I told you not to push yourself. Look what you’ve done. You must feel awful now.”
Lin Shiyue’s tone held a hint of blame, but seeing Su Cheng’s pale face, she also felt a pang of heartache.
Su Cheng’s face was flushed, not from shyness, but from her illness.
Touching her forehead, Lin Shiyue immediately understood why Su Cheng was in this state.
“Looks like I’ve reached my limit,” Su Cheng wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead. “I’ll have to take leave today.”
Lin Shiyue said seriously, “If you have a fever, you should obediently ask for leave and rest. I’ll go talk to the instructor for you.”
“Okay, thank you.”
Lin Shiyue helped Su Cheng find the instructor, and after explaining the situation, she took Su Cheng back to the dormitory.
As for why they didn’t go to the infirmary, it was because Su Cheng didn’t want to, especially since she had medicine in the dorm.
Su Cheng felt that she would be fine after taking some medicine and getting some sleep.
After taking Su Cheng back to the dorm, Lin Shiyue was also covered in sweat.
“Phew, I’m exhausted.”
“Thank you for your hard work, Class Monitor. Here’s some breakfast for you, I happened to buy extra.”
Chen Xi handed two steamed buns and a cup of soy milk to Lin Shiyue.
Lin Shiyue accepted them with a smile and a word of thanks.
As for Su Cheng, she immediately changed into clean clothes upon returning to the dorm, took her medicine, and climbed into bed.
“Chengcheng, don’t you want to eat something before you sleep?”
Su Cheng turned over to look at Lin Shiyue, her low, hoarse voice emerging, “No thanks, I don’t have an appetite. I’ll eat after I’ve rested a bit.”
Lin Shiyue felt it wasn’t right, but Su Cheng was lying weakly in bed, her face pale, looking very uncomfortable.
Lin Shiyue sat in Su Cheng’s seat, eating the buns and drinking the soy milk. Her eyes fell on the keys on the desk, and an idea sparked in her mind.
She glanced back and saw that neither Chen Xi nor Sun Xiaochen was paying attention to her. Lin Shiyue swallowed, and her hand on the desk slowly moved towards the key.
With a swift grasp, the key on the desk vanished into her hand.
Step one, complete.
After finishing breakfast, Lin Shiyue saw that Su Cheng had already closed her eyes and fallen asleep, so she quietly left the dormitory.
Sun Xiaochen and Chen Xi also left after finishing their breakfast. Although Su Cheng had said she wouldn’t eat, they still left a portion for her.
Just in case she got hungry, she would have something to fill her stomach.
In the quiet dormitory, Su Cheng was wrapped in her blanket, her body shivering from alternating chills and fevers, still breaking out in a cold sweat.
Her brows were furrowed, her face etched with pain.
“Aiya.”
After an unknown amount of time, a half-asleep Su Cheng vaguely heard the dormitory door open, but she didn’t know who it was.
“Baby, I’m here.”
