Chapter 9: The Masked Adventurer

  1. Adventure’s Guild

As expected, the building she saw during the day was a guild building used by adventurers.

At night, Lucy went back there and checked her appearance one last time before entering the building.

She wore a cloak over her work clothes and covered her face with a fox mask, which was an outfit she wore to hide her identity.

It would have been convenient to change her appearance with ‘camouflage’ without doing this, but she ruled that out because someone with the magic eye could see through it.

‘It would be a pain if my face is revealed as the princess later and my actions as an adventurer are revealed, so I’d better be careful.’

After confirming that there was no problem with her appearance, Lucy headed straight to the guild building.

Aphron Guild Association.

On the first floor, there was a reception desk and an information desk, and the area around it was bustling with conspirators.

Adventurers of various appearances.

Each of them was checking the request forms posted on the bulletin board or sitting at a table holding some kind of meeting.

“I heard that goblins appeared in the ruins of the Hellen Plains.”

“Let’s leave that alone. Goblins aren’t worth any money.”

Most of them were in parties of 4-5 people, and the races varied, including ‘Beastmen,’ ‘Demons,’ ‘Imps,’ and ‘Dark Elves.’

She leisurely passed by them.

Then, all of a sudden, the adventurers’ gazes began to turn to her.

Why were they looking at her so suspiciously?

There were two possible reasons.

One was that she had a childlike body, and the other was that her face was covered by a mask.

Lucy hurried her steps toward the information desk.

She didn’t want to draw any more attention; she wanted to finish her business as quickly as possible.

At that moment, the Beastmen man who had been sitting at the table blocked Lucy’s path with rough steps.

He looked slightly drunk, as if he was having an after-party, and began to look Lucy up and down.

“Hey! Your attire is so suspicious. Where the hell did you come from, huh? Kkeut~!”

“I just came to the guild for a request, don’t worry about it.”

“Wow! Is that a girl’s voice? Hey guys, look at this!”

The man was shouting loudly.

Behind him, his colleagues were drinking beer and giggling.

Lucy, who decided that the conversation was not going well, tried to ignore him and just pass by, but he blocked her path again.

“Why are you trying to just leave? This is a commemoration of our meeting, so at least show me your face before you go.”

He tried to take off Lucy’s mask without asking for permission, but at that moment, Lucy grabbed the man’s wrist and twisted it 180 degrees.

Crunch!

“Eww!”

The man’s scream echoed throughout the guild along with the bloody sound.

‘I was going to bend it gently and let you go…’

The man was weaker than she thought, or maybe she was just too strong.

The male party members who judged that their comrades had been attacked suddenly stood up from their seats and tried to draw their swords.

“You little thing dare to touch our comrades!?”

“Did you think I’d let you off easy because you’re young?”

They didn’t want to fight, but if they were attacked, they would just fight back.

Lucy glared at them silently.

A tense situation.

Everyone inside the association held their breath and watched the standoff.

At that moment, a blonde woman who had leisurely come down from the second floor suddenly intervened in the situation.

“What’s the fuss about?”

“… Miss Liriel?”

The woman was called Liriel.

She had long blonde hair and a small jet-black horn growing out of her head.

The men immediately calmed down when they saw her.

“I thought you asked what the fuss was about.”

“That’s right, that masked brat attacked our comrades.”

“Is that true?”

Liriel glared at Lucy.

Lucy acted as calmly as possible.

“I just subdued him because he tried to touch me without permission.”

“Don’t talk nonsense! This guy was just… yeah! He was just trying to say hello!”

“That’s it.”

Realizing that the men were drunk, Liriel quickly intervened in the situation.

“You guys seem to be really drunk, so you should go back first.”

“But my colleague!”

“I told him to go back.”

The men showed their discontent, but only for a moment, and when they saw the platinum pendant around her neck, they nodded as if they had lost their fighting spirit.

Leaving the men behind, Lucy thanked her.

“Thank you for your help.”

Liriel turned away bluntly without even pretending to be grateful, and then glared at Lucy with a cold glare and gave her some advice.

“You too, if you’re a foreigner, be careful not to cause trouble.”

Every single action was filled with charisma, Lucy thought as she watched her turn away.

She thought about it for a moment, recalling the original reason she came here and hurriedly moved toward the desk.

At the information desk, the receptionist was taking requests.

“Welcome, what brings you here?”

“I have a request to make.”

“Yes, I will help you with the reception.”

“Before that, I would like to speak with someone of higher rank in a more secret place.”

“Yes..? What is that?”

Lucy opened the coin pouch hidden between her cloak and sneakily showed her the contents.

A pile of gold coins that sparkled.

The receptionist who saw it ran inside the desk with her pupils trembling slightly and said, “Please wait a moment.”

Soon, an old man with a solemn expression began to walk out from inside the desk.

“I heard the story. Please follow me inside.”

Lucy followed him into a room located inside the desk without saying a word.

The structure looked like an office.

The old man sat down on a chair with a table and invited Lucy to sit across from him.

“First of all, it’s nice to meet you. I am Aphron, the guild master here.”

“Nice to meet you. My name is… Ruby.”

It was a made-up pseudonym.

Fortunately, the guild master didn’t seem too suspicious.

“I heard you were going to take on a huge quest. Is that true?”

“Yes.”

Lucy placed the coin pouch she had on the table.

Inside it were a whopping 100 gold coins.

The guild master, who was counting the gold coins one by one, looked at Lucy with a serious face.

“What kind of quest are you planning on taking on with this much money?”

“There’s something I want you to find.”

“What kind of thing?”

“It’s a ring that looks exactly like this.”

Lucy took out a ring with a crystal embedded in it from her bosom.

It was an item called a ‘title’ that was given to players for free in Ragnarok.

It was an event item that any user would have.

Lucy wanted to ask adventurers about the item to see if there were any players like her in this world.

‘I might not be the only one who’s experienced something like this.’

The guild master looked closely at the ring Lucy had given him and stroked his chin.

“Can you explain this ring in detail?”

“That ring was personally handcrafted by my grandfather and is a heirloom of our family. Its unique feature is that when magic is injected into the ring, a message appears.”

“What a strange ring. Is the one you lost the same?”

“Yes, it was stolen by thieves during the upper level transfer.”

“Please tell me in detail the time period, location, and what the thieves looked like.”

Lucy blurted out the lies she had thought of in advance, and the guild master began to carefully note down the contents on parchment.

Soon after, when they finished talking about accepting the request, the guild master’s gaze turned back to the pouch of gold.

“The request fee is an issue that we will have to review in the future, but are you personally hoping for 100 gold coins?”

“No.”

“Yes..?”

“100 gold coins is the deposit, and as a total request fee… I am thinking of 500 gold coins.”

“Wha.. What did you say!?”

The guild master, who had maintained a poker face the whole time, was shocked when he heard the words 500 gold coins.

500 gold coins was a large sum that a commoner would have a hard time touching even if he worked his entire life, and it was an amount that even nobles would not be able to carelessly mention.

When he was calmly presented with such a large sum of money as a fee, the guild master was unable to close his mouth.

“Is there a problem?”

“Okay, first of all… Then I will check one more thing.”

“What?”

“I will check your identity. Please give me your ID and take off your mask.”

“…”

She had encountered the crisis she had expected.

As for her identity, all she could show for now was her identity as a princess, which she could not reveal.

“I left my ID at home. Do I really need to have it?”

“There are many spies who try to use adventurers for espionage during wartime. Is there a problem?”

When Lucy could not easily prove her identity, the guild master’s gaze became even sharper.

His gaze briefly turned to the table beside him, where a sharp sword stood.

In an instant, the air in the room became stale, to the point where it would not have been strange if a sword fight broke out at any moment.

Lucy sighed secretly and reluctantly slowly lifted her mask.

“Let’s take off the mask first.”

“…!?”

The moment her eyes were exposed outside the mask,

Lucy activated her ‘Hypnosis.’

The guild master noticed something strange upon seeing the ominously glowing red eyes and tried to pick up his sword right away, but he was faster than being hypnotized.

The guild master didn’t move as if time had stopped.

Lucy then used her hypnosis skill, ‘Brainwashing,’ on him.

“First, let your guard down toward me.”

“Let your guard down…”

“Recognize me as a relative of a trustworthy acquaintance.”

“Recognize me as a relative of a trustworthy acquaintance…”

“Handle my request as a top priority.”

“Handle it as a top priority…”

The guild master followed Lucy’s words with half-open eyes.

Brainwashing skill.

It was originally a skill used to control NPCs, and he had recently learned through experiments that it could be used here as well.

After the brainwashing was over, the guild master came to his senses as if he had just woken up from a deep sleep.

“Do you remember me now, mister?”

“Ruby… It was you!? Sorry, I must have forgotten for a moment as I’ve gotten older.”

The brainwashing was successful.

The guild master began to treat Lucy as if he had known her for a long time.

“I will process the request you gave me as quickly as possible with the authority of the guild master. Is there anything else you need?”

Anything else you need.

Lucy smiled inside her mask when she heard that question.

“Will you grant me the right to be an adventurer?”
