Chapter 10: No Playing with Dump!

A thousand meters away from the Black Moon Forest defense zone, swarms of goblins merged into a massive, dark torrent.

They howled as they charged across the scorched earth toward the defense lines.

Standing atop the tower with her father, Su Na felt her heart accelerate and her breathing grow heavy as she watched the monstrous swarm surge toward them.

Though they were but a disorganized rabble of a thousand or so small-statured creatures, armed with nothing more than wooden clubs or crude spears made of stone and wood, it was enough to fill the entire front of the campsite.

A few hundred or a thousand might not seem like a large number on paper, but facing their charge directly, Su Na felt an overwhelming, suffocating pressure.

Kaibuli looked at the several hundred meters of forest clearing burned down per his daughter’s request, a flash of satisfaction crossing his eyes.

He extended a large hand to pat Su Na’s head in comfort, then nodded to a nearby military officer.

As different drum patterns rang out, the officers commanding the army formations outside the camp raised their voices to the soldiers waiting behind the abatis: “Crossbowmen, ready!”

“Archers, prepare for high-angle fire!”

Over a hundred archers raised and drew their short bows.

When the main goblin force roared to within two hundred meters, the sergeant shouted: “Release!”

Shiu, shiu, shiu…

Over a hundred sharp arrows pierced the air with a whistle.

After a brief flight, they formed clouds of arrow rain that plunged at high speed into the charging goblin clusters.

The sound of arrows piercing flesh and wretched screams rang out together in a chaotic chorus.

Su Na’s scorched-earth strategy prevented the goblins from using the forest as cover to mitigate the arrow fire.

Under the continuous barrage, dozens of goblins fell dead or wounded every second.

“Crossbowmen, ready!”

“Fire!”

As the distance closed, the heavy crossbowmen firing horizontally finally pulled their triggers.

The vanguard goblins who had survived the archers were mowed down like wheat before a scythe.

“Set spears!!!”

“Kill!”

The archers stowed their bows and drew various sidearms, preparing alongside the front-row spearmen.

The remaining distance vanished, and the two forces collided violently.

“Kill them!”

‘I’ll gut you, you little bastards!’

Spears over two meters long were thrust out repeatedly from behind the abatis.

Every so often, the bright reflection of blades and swords flashed in the sun.

From Su Na’s high vantage point, hundreds of goblins were being slaughtered at a startling speed.

Blood and severed limbs flew everywhere.

Archers on the wooden walls continued to rain arrows down on the goblins in the rear.

Seeing the goblins fall, many people showed smiles of relief and satisfaction.

“Nana, are you alright?”

Su Na shook her head, leaning pale-faced against Levi.

“I’m fine, just feeling a bit nauseous.”

Though Su Na viewed the goblins as mere animals and their blood was a “harmonious” green, seeing such a large-scale slaughter with her own eyes still caused intense physical discomfort.

Her stomach twitched faintly.

Even if she pretended they were monkeys or beasts, the overwhelming stench of blood could not be ignored.

She had lived in a peaceful nation for a long time.

Back then, even photos of victims would make her heart flutter with anxiety.

Facing the impact of death directly like this was difficult to endure at first, regardless of her mental preparations.

Kaibuli, however, was quite thick-skinned; hearing that Su Na was fine, he cheerfully turned back to discuss matters with his adjutant.

Ever since the repeating crossbows had been distributed to the various farms, the balance between offense and defense had fundamentally reversed.

Previously, the Fafnir Territory had been caught in a stalemate.

If they wanted to eliminate the goblin main force, the creatures would simply retreat into their forest nests to wage guerrilla warfare.

Sending soldiers into tunnels less than a meter high was essentially throwing lives away.

Retreating was even worse; if the front-line defense was breached, thousands of goblins would flood the territory, shattering the defense lines instantly.

The difficulty of hunting them down like needles in a haystack would have made any officer’s head spin.

Daily production, life, and basic order would have been thrown into chaos.

But since they had the repeating crossbows for self-defense, ordinary subjects no longer had to live in fear.

Some even boldly took the initiative to hunt down the goblins that plagued their crops and families.

In the past, the night belonged to the goblins because they could ambush from close range, but the closer the range, the more powerful the repeating crossbow became.

Previously, people chose to turn a blind eye; faced with protecting their food or their families, most chose the latter.

Losing grain was better than losing a life.

But if given the choice, they would certainly keep both—and ideally kill the thief once and for all.

Now, scattered harassment for food was impossible, and large-scale raids were easily wiped out by cavalry units alerted to their presence.

They couldn’t win a fight, and they couldn’t steal anything; the pressure of survival naturally piled up on the goblin tribes.
