Join the Server“Lord Hubert!”
Su Na, who was watching the soldiers train at the military camp’s training grounds, felt the bright surroundings suddenly dim.
Turning her head, she realized it was Baron Kaibuli’s esteemed guest, the advanced mage, and she hurriedly performed a polite noble salute.
There were not many mages of the advanced level within the kingdom.
Regardless of whether they had received an official title, their status was slightly higher than that of low-level nobles, being roughly equivalent to high-ranking nobles.
Su Na was still only an heir and not a Baroness, and since she had already joined the mage community, she naturally behaved with utmost respect before Mage Hubert.
Seeing her like this, Hubert smiled and waved his hand: “No need for such formality, Miss Su Na. Since you are studying at the Royal Magic Academy, technically you can call me Senior.”
Su Na nodded slightly and readily complied: “Senior Hubert!”
Hubert was exceptionally tall and looked to be only in his early thirties, making it quite reasonable for Su Na to call him Senior.
Su Na had met Hubert before, but he had always been distant and polite, reacting similarly to Baron Kaibuli.
Such proactive initiative today was something Su Na had never seen before.
There could only be one explanation: once Su Na entered the academy, she was labeled as one of their own by him.
Such a situation was actually quite normal in modern times.
When seventy percent of practitioners in a certain field graduated from the same school, one could easily imagine their dominance in that field.
The Grand Mage Association of this world was precisely such a unique institution with an aloof status.
The association maintained absolute neutrality, holding intense interest only in matters concerning magic, and constantly exploring and deciphering the mysteries of the magical world.
While the magic academies within each nation were also educational institutions independently affiliated with the Grand Association, because the students they recruited mostly came from the same nation, the students of each magic academy naturally tended to align with their own countries.
In other words, while in theory all academies belonged to the same family without dividing friend from foe, the student bodies privately made those distinctions.
With external pressure, they naturally huddled together internally.
Whatever the case, Hubert’s proactive approach proved that joining the mage circle was indeed beneficial to her, and she happened to have quite a few doubts that required Hubert’s answers.
“Senior Hubert, actually I’ve never quite understood: why did you… why did you choose the Fafnir family?”
For a baron to recruit an advanced mage as a subordinate was actually quite fantastical to hear.
After all, a lord located near the inland regions had little demand for high combat power, as a thousand or two ordinary militia had previously solved the vast majority of the territory’s problems.
Hubert glanced at her, the smile on his face unchanging: “Because goblins are the most abundant here.”
“Huh?”
Hubert looked up at the lush forest in the distance: “I previously traveled to various countries with my mentor. Although we found traces of goblins everywhere, the active population of goblins in the Black Moon Forest, where the three provinces of Roriman intersect, is dozens of times higher than in other regions! Don’t you find that strange?”
“So I settled down here, wanting to find the source of the problem. But there has never been any unusual discovery; they… just seem to grow out of the ground.”
Hubert made a slight joke and then continued: “In the past, it was fine, but now the number of goblins you hunt is ten or dozens of times higher than before! No matter how rich the resources of the Black Moon Forest are, it shouldn’t be able to continuously produce goblins at such a high rate.”
Hubert’s expression was highly solemn.
Previously, he had only been puzzled and curious.
His mentor once said that the essence of magic lay in exploring and discovering the world’s mysteries, so this bizarre phenomenon naturally became a case study for him to practice his mentor’s theory.
Coupled with the fact that Baron Kaibuli treated people very well, he had grown accustomed to it over the years.
If Su Na hadn’t suddenly cobbled together the repeating crossbow, boosting the efficiency of killing the goblin population by several levels, he wouldn’t even have noticed this counter-intuitive problem.
A while ago, he simply charged deep into the forest and took out several large goblin nests in a row, killing thousands if not ten thousand goblins.
Even if they reproduced as fast as rats or rabbits, they should have quieted down for a while.
Yet, the very next day, he saw those damn green, bald heads again.
Listening to Hubert’s words, Su Na’s expression turned a bit strange; had it been before, she would have harbored the same anxiety.
But she recalled the memory she had obtained during the previous meditation class.
If her memory served her correctly, the area little Su Na and her mother had visited was deep within the Black Moon Forest, and she hadn’t seen any goblins there back then.
She had a faint inkling in her mind that perhaps these little soaps really did grow out of the ground…
Because if that senior was from her old world, setting up a monster-spawner to give her a little head start wouldn’t be out of the question.
