“Have you eaten?”
“Yeah.”
It was the same exchange every day, word for word, like a ritual.
The thin boy didn’t stop in the living room. He hurried straight into his bedroom, shut the door, and locked it, retreating into the one small space that was his.
Only then did the stiffness in his face ease. It didn’t last. He turned around and looked at the black cat that had just drifted through the closed door like a ghost and settled in behind him.
“You…”
He tried to calm down, but the sight of it still sent a hot rush of panic through his chest.
“Qingqiu! Everything I told you is true! You have to believe me, meow!”
A black cat that walked through wooden doors. A black cat that talked. And his mother, in the next room, clearly couldn’t see or hear it.
Lin Qingqiu pushed the fear down, sat in his chair with a blank face, and tried to look unbothered. “What are you talking about?”
“The world is ending! And you’re the only one who can save it!”
“Keep your voice down…”
The cat glanced left, then right, like a burglar casing a house. Its big eyes darted around twice before it dropped to a whisper. “Soon, demons are going to pour into our world, one wave after another. Everything will fall into chaos, and humanity will be wiped out.”
“You’re the Martial God ten years from now. You’re the only one who can save the world.”
It was only a few sentences, but they left Lin Qingqiu stunned. For a long moment, he couldn’t think of a single thing to say.
He’d considered that this might be a scam. But a scam couldn’t explain a cat that walked through doors.
“Me? The Martial God?”
“You!” The cat nodded so hard its whole body bobbed. “When humanity was on the brink, I traveled back in time just to find you!”
Lin Qingqiu looked down at his hands. Barely over 1.7 meters tall, under 55 kilos, thin as a bamboo pole. Nothing about him screamed future Martial God.
He was calm to the point of indifference, with no real desire to win at anything. Even when he went 0-16 in a LoL match and got fountain-camped, he’d just sat there quietly. The Leshan Giant Buddha would’ve lost its temper before he did.
“So in the future, I failed, right?” Curiosity got the better of him. “How did it end? Did I die?”
“…”
For once, the cat went quiet. After a pause, it said, “That’s not important.”
“Why not?”
His mind drifted back to everything he’d read in history books, those tired stories that kept repeating themselves. The Yue family army of the Southern Song. The Qi family army of the Ming. Great generals who, in the end, were brought down by their own side.
“You were captured,” the cat said at last. “By the time we found you, you were already… a broodmother for the demons.”
“???”
The cat stood on its hind legs and spread its paws. “I was there, you know. Your belly was this big, and you were covered in tentacles…”
Lin Qingqiu’s calm expression nearly shattered. “Stop talking.”
“I said it wasn’t important! You’re the one who insisted!”
His idea of a “broodmother” came mostly from hentai, but the cat’s description left no doubt that it meant exactly what he’d feared.
I turn into a tentacle broodmother in the future? That’s insane!
“But I’m a guy.”
“You’re the magical girl Valkyrie!”
Valkyrie? Magical girl?

He looked down again and touched his flat chest, as if to double-check. He was completely sure of his own conclusion, so he said it again. “I’m a guy.”

Lin Qingqiu stared at the cat in silence. However calm he tried to look on the outside, his thoughts were crashing around like waves in a storm.
It took a long time to sort the mess in his head into something he could say out loud. “I don’t want to.”
“Save the world? Let someone else do it. Even if the sky falls, there’s always someone taller to hold it up.”
It wasn’t selfishness. He was just an ordinary vocational school student in an ordinary, law-abiding society. One of the kids the education system had filtered out as a lost cause.
In his mother’s eyes, he was a rebellious brat. He had none of the fiery resolve of an anime protagonist. He’d never even been in a fight. If anything, he was always the one getting picked on.
With great power comes great responsibility. He had no power, so he’d take no responsibility.
And anyway, that future Valkyrie had failed too, hadn’t she?
The cat didn’t seem surprised by his answer. “Is that so? Even if you end up a tentacle broodmother?”

“So to save the world, you need to make the Demon Lord fall in love with you! Before the Demon Realm invades!”
“!!!”
Lin Qingqiu couldn’t hold it in any longer. He recoiled so hard his back slammed against the chair.
An image rose in his mind: a mature, commanding woman on a throne. If she was pretty, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
But since when was falling in love a strategy?!
“I don’t really follow your logic.”
“They say the Demon Lord once fell for the Valkyrie. If you two get together, maybe the gate to the Demon Realm won’t open on Earth, and the demons won’t invade at full scale.”
Lin Qingqiu froze. “So she likes women?”
“Men.”
“So he’s gay?”
“You’re the Valkyrie~”
His brain short-circuited again. He stared blankly at the cat, which had answered with total confidence, and for a moment he simply couldn’t make the turn.
The cat ignored his stupor. It reached behind itself and pulled out a jewel as red as fresh blood.
“This is your Heart Stone. Take it, and you can become a magical girl. You can become the Valkyrie.”
The jewel was cold when it landed in his palm. In the next second, he leapt out of his chair as though he’d been shocked. The stone hit the floor, rolled into a corner, and lay there glittering under the light with an unsettling glow.
The cat dashed over in a panic, scooped it up, and rubbed it against the fur on its chest, nearly in tears. “That’s your Heart Stone! How could you just…”
“So you’re telling me! I’m supposed to turn into a woman and fall in love with a man… a male, a monster who might not even be human?! All to save the world?”
His pupils trembled. He couldn’t keep his composure anymore and shot the words out in disbelief.
The cat looked up, totally baffled. “Yeah? What’s the problem? It’s worth a shot.”
“And if it fails?”
“Then you become a broodmother in the future. With tentacles this thick, meow~”
“…”
