Lin Qingqiu sat in front of the computer without a word, knees pulled up on the chair, staring blankly at the gem glowing on the desk.
“The future Valkyrie has bottomless magic! They say it comes from the Demon Lord.”
“If you commune with the Heart Stone, you can get that magic early and become a magical girl!”
“With the Valkyrie’s magic, plus the magic that awakens when the Demon Realm’s gates open in the future, you’ll end up stronger than she was! But whatever you do, don’t think about assassination. That’s just stupid.”
His brain had already crashed, and he hadn’t heard a word of it. Instead, a stray thought floated up: a gem this beautiful, if he sold it at auction, might go for tens of millions.
His mind wandered off again.
Glowing gems were supposed to be radioactive, weren’t they? Bad for your health if you wore them long-term.
“Are you even listening?!” The cat leapt onto the desk and planted itself in front of him, scowling.
“What?”
“I said this power might go to your head, but don’t get any ideas about assassination.”
Lin Qingqiu shook his head automatically.
He couldn’t even bring himself to kill a chicken. He couldn’t hold down a live fish…
“Peacetime really is great~” The cat peered at him curiously. “They say the future Valkyrie was ruthless and decisive. But you’re kind of… soft? I wonder what happens in between.”
“Don’t you know the Valkyrie?”
“I met her once! When we went to rescue her, in the Demon Cave! At the time, she…”
“Stop.”
Not only would he become a seedbed, but the friends and comrades who came to rescue him would watch it happen with their own eyes!
His scalp prickled just thinking about it. “Social death” didn’t begin to cover it. He’d rather die early!
Lin Qingqiu’s mouth twitched. He simply could not accept a future like that.
“Just try the Heart Stone!” The cat held the gem up in both paws like an offering. “You can cancel the magical girl form whenever you want! Don’t worry!”
As it came closer, the gem’s restrained red glow intensified, spilling out a scarlet, bewitching light that felt vaguely ominous.
“That doesn’t look like anything good.”
He refused the cat’s pitch and turned his head away as if fleeing.
As long as he wasn’t a magical girl, saving the world and becoming the Valkyrie had nothing to do with him. He’d just be one of the countless people who die in the apocalypse, a number in the casualty count.
At least that was better than becoming a woman and dating a male, or becoming a seedbed while his friends watched!
“It’s been tainted by miasma. Its light used to be really beautiful.” The cat tried again to press the gem into his hand. “This city is a demon outpost. Soon the demons will invade, one after another. You need the power to protect yourself, your family, and your friends.”
“And even if you run away, once your magic awakens in the future, you’ll still make a fine seedbed. They don’t care about gender.”
Between the reasoning, the emotional appeal, and the threat of becoming a seedbed, Lin Qingqiu began to waver.
He swallowed. “That’s so hardcore…”
“Demons aren’t human~”
He looked down at the egg-sized ruby in his palm. Maybe it sensed its master, because the Heart Stone flashed eagerly with a scarlet glow.
He could faintly feel a connection between his heart and the gem. His heartbeat even slowly fell into rhythm with the Heart Stone’s flickering.
At some point, fragmented, chaotic images flooded into his mind…
A sky churning with dark clouds, the whole world tinted blood-red.
Horrifying monsters, panicked crowds, a powerful and beautiful magical girl, and a city already smashed to pieces.
Disaster and suffering everywhere. A hopeless apocalypse.
Dazed, Lin Qingqiu pulled himself out of the vision and frowned slightly. He sometimes watched hardcore gore films, but some of those images had made him physically queasy.
When he looked up again, the computer desk suddenly seemed a little taller than before…
“Valkyrie! Dong dong dong! Valkyrie! Dong dong dong!”
The cat cheered and bounced around on the desk. Lin Qingqiu instinctively lowered his head and saw the small, budding swell on his chest.
“…”
She raised her hand. It was soft and boneless, delicate and lovely, like a fragile work of art. Her forearm was slender and smooth, with no visible pores or hair, no bulging veins. Her skin looked like set cream.
Soft silver hair spilled over her shoulders and tickled her cheeks.
It took a beat, and then Lin Qingqiu’s face filled with horror. She shot to her feet, not even caring that the chair toppled over with a loud crash.
She wanted to sprint to the bathroom and look in the mirror, but before she could take a step, her mother’s scolding came through the wall.
“What did you break?!”
Her mother absolutely could not see her like this!
Lin Qingqiu tucked her small, fair feet up, then dashed to the door and locked it.
Holy crap!
How is this any different from crossdressing at home?!
Don’t tell me I can’t change back!
Her heart pounded as if it might leap out of her throat. She couldn’t hold on to her calm expression anymore and turned to the cat in a panic.
“Calm down.”
“I am calm…”
The sweet, childish voice that came out of her stopped her short. She lowered it and asked through gritted teeth, “How do I change back?”
If she weren’t calm, she’d have been tearing the cat to pieces by now!
She had never agreed to become a magical girl!
“The Heart Stone controls the transformation. It’ll cancel on its own after about half an hour.” The cat looked innocent. “I didn’t know it would be so eager. It didn’t even ask for your opinion.”
“Half an hour…”
Lin Qingqiu took a deep breath and sat back down at the computer, but her feet dangled in midair. She awkwardly pointed her toes until they just touched the floor.
“I’m so much shorter.”
And that wasn’t all!
She looked down at her outfit…
A tight white school swimsuit hugged her new, undeveloped figure.
The decorative little skirt didn’t cover her butt at all. The sheer material over her stomach showed off a cute belly button, and a ring was strapped around her thigh.
Her upper body was snugly wrapped in soft fabric, while everything below the thighs was bare to the air, which made her deeply uneasy.
Her dazed brain caught up all at once. Her face, pale with panic a moment ago, flushed quickly, her cheeks burning like a kettle.
In moments the red spread to her neck and ears, charming and alluring.
Magical girls were supposed to fight in this? It would only get the demons more excited!
The magical girl in the vision hadn’t been wearing this!
“This is the Valkyrie’s swimsuit~ I’ve seen her photobook! Why is it on you?”

Lin Qingqiu had no time to wonder why the future Valkyrie would shoot a swimsuit photobook. She hurriedly grabbed her phone and opened the front camera, which was unnervingly realistic.

Lin Qingqiu was stunned. The girl on the screen wore the same confused look and tilted her head slightly.
