Chapter 12: Rescued

The weight on my back vanished in an instant.

The hooded figure had let go of me and fled—probably because someone had shown up.

I couldn’t help but feel grateful that I’d escaped with my life once again.

I looked up and saw Frey standing there, sword in hand.

“Are you alright, Rosa?”

Frey asked, looking at me.

“I’m fine—just a scratch.

Go after him.”

“Right.”

With that, he took off in pursuit.

Not far away, I could see Warren and some villagers who’d heard the commotion.

A few of them followed Frey, including two men who looked like guards.

Everyone was in disheveled clothes—they’d clearly just gotten out of bed.

What caught my attention was that Frey was fully dressed.

Did he sleep in his clothes whenever he had a bed?

“Are you okay, Rosa?

I’m sorry—I should’ve come sooner.”

Warren carefully helped me up, and the moment he saw my face, he pulled me into a tight embrace.

“It’s alright now.

He’s gone.

Don’t be afraid—I’m right here with you.”

Only then, with the tension finally released, did I realize tears were streaming down my face again.

I’d cried again, shamefully.

Damn it—why was I so useless?

“Let me take this little miss to my place for treatment.

I’m a priest—I can heal her wound.”

I noticed the speaker was a young man holding a staff, wearing white robes.

“Oh, thank you.

Rosa, hang in there—it’ll be over soon.”

With that, Warren lifted me up.

In a princess carry.

“Eh—hey!”

I instinctively tried to struggle.

“Don’t move.

You’ll fall.”

Warren had to warn me, carrying on without a word.

Any regret about my weakness I’d been feeling moments ago had been completely swept away.

All I felt now was overwhelming embarrassment.

I… I’d been carried by this trap…

“Ugh…”

I covered my burning face.

I had no face left to show anyone.

The humiliation didn’t last long.

Upon reaching our destination, Warren gently set me down on a bed inside a house.

“Well then, please leave the rest to me.”

The man who’d introduced himself as a priest stepped forward with a warm smile.

“Now, please bear with me.”

He grabbed the knife embedded in my thigh and yanked it out in one swift motion.

“Aaaargh!”

That hurt like hell!

Was this really how he treated patients?

Was this priest messing with me?!

“What are you doing?!”

Warren also protested on my behalf.

The priest ignored him, tossing the knife aside before aiming his staff at my leg and speaking a single word.

“Hyper Regeneration.”

Almost immediately, the pain vanished.

“So fast.”

I stared at my leg in amazement.

There was no trace of a wound—no scar, nothing.

It was as if the injury had never happened.

Only the torn fabric and remaining blood stains proved there’d ever been a wound there.

“You’re amazing.

Thank you, Priest.”

This priest was incredibly skilled—he could cast without incantation too.

Was he an adventurer just passing through and staying overnight?

“Haha, I appreciate the compliment.”

The priest smiled modestly.

“By the way—could you fetch her a change of clothes?

Look at the state of this little lady’s dress.”

“Oh, right.

Wait here, Rosa.”

Warren acknowledged and hurried off.

“No, since I’m already healed, I can get it myself.”

I tried to sit up, but the priest stopped me.

“Better rest a while longer.

I used Hyper Regeneration to avoid leaving a scar, but the downside is that while it heals wounds quickly, it consumes a lot of the patient’s stamina.

You should take it easy for now.”

“Ah, fine.”

I lay back down and let Warren go fetch my clothes.

Not long after Warren left, Frey, Uncle Hans, and the two guard-looking men entered through the door.

“Are you alright, Rosa?”

Frey asked with concern.

“Yeah, I’m fine now.”

I pointed at the priest.

“This priest already healed me.”

“Indeed… not even a scar left…” Frey examined my leg closely before turning to the priest.

“Thank you.

I didn’t realize you were so skilled.”

“Haha, not at all.”

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t catch the culprit.

We need to ask you a few questions.”

The two guards stepped forward and addressed me.

“Please, hold on.”

The priest stepped in.

“This young lady has just been through a terrible ordeal—her mind can’t have fully settled yet.

If she’s subjected to harsh questioning right away, she likely won’t be able to answer clearly.

Why not let me conduct the interview on your behalf?

If anything’s missed, you can always follow up later.”

His tone was polite, but what I heard was: You two are too ugly and might scare the little girl.

I’m handsome, so I’ll do it.

“Hmph, pretty boy… fine, suit yourself.”

The guards surprisingly agreed to the priest’s request.

“Much obliged.”

The priest smiled gratefully at them.

“Now then, Miss Rosa.”

The priest smiled gently.

“I apologize if this brings up unpleasant memories or upsets you—but I still need to ask you about what just happened.”

“It’s fine.

Go ahead.”

I replied casually.

Though the incident was humiliating, it wasn’t so bad that just recalling it would make me unhappy.

I really didn’t want to admit to my own weakness.

The priest straightened his posture and began questioning me in earnest.

“Then I won’t hold back.

Did you get a look at the culprit’s face?”

“No—I couldn’t see what he looked like.

It was too dark, and he was wearing a hood.

I… I could sense the dark aura coming off him.”

“Yes, every mage can feel that nauseating presence.”

The priest continued.

“Did you see what weapon he used, besides the dagger on the ground?”

“He only threw knives at me.

I didn’t see any other weapons.”

“What were you doing there in the first place?”

“I… I couldn’t sleep, so I went for a walk and happened to pass by.”

“I see…” The priest pondered for a moment.

“One last question.

When I arrived at the scene, I saw the culprit pinning you to the ground… Why didn’t he finish you off?

Did something happen?”

My heart skipped a beat.
