Spirit Sword Sect, Shuǐyuè Peak.
Inside a sealed chamber, Lin Lingshu halted her breathing exercise, drawing in and refining heaven and earth’s spiritual energy. She had only been back in the sect a few days when the Water Moon Immortal herself sent her a massive batch of resources. Lin Lingshu couldn’t help but praise inwardly—what a good master indeed!
She exhaled a turbid breath, feeling her essence, energy, and spirit return to their peak. Glancing at the Foundation Establishment Pill in her hand, she called into the empty air:
“Tiandao.”
The smooth, pale-white orb of Heavenly Dao slowly appeared overhead.
“Outsider of another world—what is it?”
“You said the great trend is for the male lead to save the world. But tell me—does it have to be him, or does the world simply need saving?”
A small difference in wording, but the meaning was worlds apart.
“The origin of Heaven is bound within the Primordial Secret Realm. Only the Child of Destiny can break those shackles and save this world.”
“Only him…” Lin Lingshu murmured. She recalled how, in the novel Knocking on the Gates of Immortality, this was the male lead’s greatest golden finger. The Tai Xuan Secret Realm had originally been a fragment of the Primordial Secret Realm, though how it got separated was never explained. She snapped back to herself.
“Tiandao, help me gather the world’s spiritual energy.”
“Very well.”
The mechanical voice echoed from the orb. At once, torrents of spiritual qi roared toward Lin Lingshu.
She swallowed the Foundation Establishment Pill in one gulp. Now was not the time for idle thoughts about destiny and philosophy. Without strength, all else was empty talk. The next step—Foundation Establishment!
Atop Shuǐyuè Peak, spiritual qi surged violently, draining the surrounding hundred miles dry. Dark clouds rolled across the sky, streaked with hidden lightning.
“What’s going on?”
“Looks like someone’s forming a foundation.”
“Why’s all the qi flowing to Shuǐyuè Peak?”
“I think Senior Sister Lin is making her breakthrough!”
“Wow, as expected of Senior Sister!”
“I wonder who she’ll choose as a Dao partner in the future?”
“Probably someone even stronger than her.”
“Right, I’ve heard Wu Leixuan, the senior brother of Thunderwind Sect, has long since reached Foundation Establishment.”
“And Senior Sister Lin seems to have switched to cultivating the Dao of Thunder.”
“Then maybe she’ll end up with him.”
“…”
At that moment, Wang Shuheng also stepped out of his wooden hut. Hearing the chatter, he felt a faint sting in his chest.
He lifted his head, gazing for a while at the summit of Shuǐyuè Peak. Then, clutching his long blade, he turned and walked toward the steward’s hall.
“What? Fellow Daoist Wang, you want to leave the mountain for a few days?”
“Yes.”
Wang Shuheng’s talent in pill-crafting had already begun to show. Within Spirit Sword Sect, his name was slowly gaining recognition. The steward kept moving his brush, but took out a token and handed it to him.
“If you don’t return on time, punishment will be severe.”
Taking the token, Wang Shuheng walked down the mountain. His home lay near a small town at the mountain’s foot. Since childhood, he had dreamed of seeing the world. After his parents passed away, he had resolved to leave—but then Lin Lingshu had saved him from a wolf, and recommended him into the sect.
He avoided the main road, taking narrow paths. After walking for hours, night fully draped the sky. Finally, he pushed open the door of an old wooden hut.
Inside, he lay straight down on the dusty bed, ignoring the grime, and quickly fell into deep sleep.
The next morning, Wang Shuheng woke and began cleaning. He swept the dust from the house, cleared away cobwebs, and tidied the small home.
Afterward, he went behind the hut. There stood two stone mounds and two weathered markers, their words drawn in charcoal: Father Wang Hongshou and Mother Meng Bing.
Wang Shuheng knelt.
“Father, Mother—I’m home.”
“Father, don’t worry. I’ve never gone hungry out there. In fact, I’m living pretty well.”
“Mother, I did as you said. I kept the house clean.”
“Father, Mother—I’ll be just fine outside. You can rest easy.”
“I joined Spirit Sword Sect. I met Senior Sister Lin.”
“Senior Sister Lin… she’s very kind. That time on the road, when a wolf attacked me, she saved me—and even recommended me into the sect.”
“She’s very good… though a bit of a glutton.”
(Lin Lingshu: I am not, I deny it, don’t slander me!)
At that, a faint smile flickered in his eyes.
“The last time Senior Sister Lin ate the meat I roasted, I felt so happy.”
“Father, is this what it feels like to like someone?”
“Every time I see Senior Sister Lin, I feel joy—especially when she eats my cooking.”
“Father, didn’t you once say the reason you married Mother was because of a roasted mountain pheasant?”
“If Senior Sister Lin likes it, I’d gladly roast her chickens for a lifetime.”
“Father, Mother… I think I like Senior Sister Lin.”
He gave a self-mocking laugh.
“But… I’m not worthy of her.”
“She’s the Water Moon Immortal’s direct disciple, future master of Shuǐyuè Peak. She’s about to form her Foundation.”
“And I? Just a fifth-layer Qi Refiner. Other than a bit of pill-making to earn spirit stones, I have nothing.”
“She should like geniuses at her level.”
“But… I don’t want to give up.”
“I like her. I won’t give up.”
“Father, Mother, the sect’s great competition is coming.”
“I promised Senior Sister Lin I’d win a good placement.”
“I won’t break my word. I’ll work hard.”
“Next time I come back here… I hope I can bring Senior Sister Lin with me.”
Slowly rising, Wang Shuheng took a broom and swept the fallen leaves around the graves.
Spirit Sword Sect, Shuǐyuè Peak.
Within the sealed chamber, Lin Lingshu was deep in her breakthrough, wholly immersed. She didn’t notice the thunderous phantom behind her, shifting and morphing—manifesting visions of Leize, Shouyuan, Longma, Lei Si, Kui Niu, and Guo Snake, all thunder-beasts of legend.
Then, nine figures took form. Anyone familiar with the mythos of Lin Lingshu’s original world would recognize them immediately:
Together, the nine phantoms transformed into nine illusory small worlds—Shenxiao, Qingxiao, Bixiao, Danxiao, Jingxiao, Yuxiao, Langxiao, Zixiao, Taixiao.
The Nine Heavens of Shenxiao!
Those heavens overlapped, merging into a towering divine figure, enthroned upon myriad thunders.
Its face was blank. Yet behind Lin Lingshu, the six thunder-beast visions twined together, forming an invisible brush. With each step of her Foundation breakthrough, that brush traced upon the god-demon’s face, slowly sketching its features.
