Chapter 17: A Blunder, a Best Friend’s Scrutiny, and a Double Dilemma

Pfft—!

Ye Xingchen abruptly spun his head, a mouthful of juice fanning out across the floor. He had reacted swiftly, narrowly sparing the unfortunate student directly opposite him from a drenching.

Still, this did nothing to quell the chorus of disgusted murmurs that rose around them.

“Ye! Xing! Chen!”

Accompanied by heavy footsteps, the bald instructor, tasked with maintaining order, bore down upon him like a human fortress, his gleaming forehead reflecting the fury in his eyes.

“You can’t even eat in peace! Since you possess such boundless energy, your lunch break is hereby canceled! Now, go stand in the corridor and serve as a human sculpture!”

Ye Xingchen: “……”

‘The heavenly dao always finds its way back; who among us can escape its cycle?’

Silently enduring the indifferent, mocking stares from those around him, he resignedly gathered his tableware and headed towards the corridor.

Meanwhile, on Su Liyue’s side, Mu Wanqing had just been jolted back from her terrifying reverie by Ye Xingchen’s utterly absurd antics.

“Yueyue, are you truly certain this fellow can serve as your shield? He appears… well… rather unreliable, doesn’t he?”

Cough, cough… Qingqing, one mustn’t judge solely by appearances. In truth, Ye Xingchen… he’s actually quite dependable.”

Su Liyue managed to maintain a composed expression as she spoke.

“Dependable?! That lunatic who adds unknown ingredients to his potions? Yueyue, don’t tell me… you’ve fallen for him?”

Both Su Liyue and Ye Xingchen froze simultaneously.

‘Love myself? Do I truly appear that narcissistic? And what exactly is wrong with praising myself!?’

“Qingqing! What utter nonsense are you spouting! I merely… believe he possesses immense talent in alchemy! Ah, yes, talent, that’s it!”

Su Liyue immediately waved her hand, though with such force that she nearly sent her own meal tray flying, almost earning herself a shared punishment with Ye Xingchen.

Mu Wanqing’s gaze sharpened incrementally.

“But you’ve distinctly rejected so many boys, and yet he alone became the exception…”

‘Damn it, how did I overlook that?! It just goes to show, spending too much time with oneself inevitably leads to such ingrained habits.’

“Qingqing, the truth is, Xingchen… sometimes… he can be quite endearing.” Su Liyue suddenly, with a serious expression, cradled Mu Wanqing’s face in her hands and spoke with utter sincerity.

“En-endearing?! That madman who adds unknown ingredients to his potions? Actually cute?! Yueyue… your aesthetic sense…”

“Isn’t it so? Besides that junior student this morning, I recall there was also a Yaochi sister before…” Su Liyue stated, her voice brimming with righteous indignation.

“Wait! Yueyue, you actually know the precise details of Ye Xingchen being confessed to? And today, during the summoning ceremony, he publicly knocked you down! I was furious on your behalf! Did you not even notice? You weren’t even angry at the time!?”

Mu Wanqing exclaimed, utterly astonished.

“Th-that’s because! He… right! We’ve known each other since childhood!” Su Liyue stammered, improvising an explanation in her haste.

In the corridor, Ye Xingchen himself suddenly erupted into a violent fit of coughing.

‘It’s over. I’m embarrassed for myself; this clumsy excuse I conjured up is simply awful!’

“Knowing each other since childhood grants him permission to casually put an arm around your waist?” Mu Wanqing suddenly leaned in, her nose almost brushing against Su Liyue’s face.

“And, Yue-Yue-your-face-is-so-red-oh~”

‘Damn it, managing the facial expressions of two bodies simultaneously is truly too difficult! Especially with Mu Wanqing this close.’

“Besides, Yueyue, if it were any other boy touching you, would you accept it?”

“I’d say they’re asking to be turned into ice sculptures!” Su Liyue slammed her hand on the table, making the bread in her tray jump.

“Ohh—” Mu Wanqing drew out the sound, her eyes curving into crescent moons.

“So, Ye Xingchen is a spe-cial case, isn’t he~”

‘Damn it, I’ve been cornered! My best friend is even smarter than I imagined. No, I absolutely cannot continue this topic!’

“Qingqing! Do you know why I insist on calling you Qingqing?”

Mu Wanqing shook her head. From the moment they first met until now, Su Liyue had consistently addressed her as Qingqing. Despite several attempts to correct her, Su Liyue remained steadfast.

Over time, as “Qingqing” (晴晴 – clear/sunny) and “Qingqing” (清清 – pure/clear) sounded quite similar, Mu Wanqing had gradually grown accustomed to it. Yet, for Su Liyue to bring it up now…

“Qingqing Zijing, Youyou Wo Xin… it’s like you are the clear sky and rising sun, while I am the pure moonlight of the night.”

(TL Note: A line from the classic Chinese poem ‘The Book of Songs,’ meaning ‘Your blue collar, my yearning heart’). ‘Qingqing’ (清清 – pure/clear) feels too distant, too cold. But ‘Qingqing’ (晴晴 – clear/sunny)

She smiled, gently touching Mu Wanqing’s forehead with her own.

“Isn’t this simply destined to be—”

“Good best friends!”

Mu Wanqing abruptly cut in, simultaneously pressing a napkin against Su Liyue’s nose.

“Wipe your sweat first. You’re so nervous you’re sweating just reciting a poem, and you still have the nerve to claim there’s nothing going on with Ye Xingchen?”

In the corridor, Ye Xingchen despairingly knocked his head against the wall.

‘This attempt to change the subject? Negative points!’

Sigh, I can’t win against you… whatever you say it is, it is.” Su Liyue conceded, pressing a hand to her forehead.

Mu Wanqing’s eyes suddenly shone like searchlights.

“So, you admit it!?”

“Admit what!?” Su Liyue nearly leaped out of her chair.

Ye Xingchen, simultaneously controlling his male body, was frantically scratching the wall in the corridor.

Mu Wanqing enumerated on her fingers:

“One, you find him handsome. Two, you permit him to put his arm around your waist. Three, you even remember the precise details of his confessions…”

“Stop, stop, stop! These are all your gross overinterpretations!” Su Liyue could barely listen any longer.

‘This woman’s sixth sense is truly terrifying! Or is it simply due to an innate gossipy disposition?’

Just then, a dull, thudding sound suddenly echoed from the corridor.

Everyone turned their heads towards the sound, only to see Ye Xingchen rhythmically tapping the wall with his knuckles, an expression of utter despair etched across his face.

“Ye Xingchen! What the hell are you doing getting frisky with a wall?! Since you refuse to behave, then get your ass into the dormitory corridor and face the wall in contemplation!” The bald instructor’s furious roar immediately resounded.

“Teacher, actually… I’m researching the magic patterns on the wall…”

“You’re spouting nonsense! This wall was built just last week with ordinary cement! There’s no damn magic circuit for you to research!”

In the cafeteria, Su Liyue watched ‘herself’ being dragged away, her shoulders trembling slightly. This bizarre maneuver had, once again, truly landed her in trouble.

Mu Wanqing suddenly leaned closer again and remarked:

“Yueyue, why are you suddenly trembling like this? Could it be… you feel bad for him?”

“No way! I just choked, alright!” With that, Su Liyue vigorously guzzled a large mouthful of juice.

Meanwhile, Ye Xingchen was currently facing an unprecedented crisis of survival.

The bald instructor, as if escorting a high-security prisoner, handed him over to the dormitory administrator:

“Keep a close eye on him!”

He patted Ye Xingchen’s shoulder, a sinister grin spreading across his face as he spoke.

“During your lunch break! You will stand at military attention!”

He wondered if the instructor had learned Lion’s Roar (TL Note: A powerful martial arts technique from Chinese wuxia novels, often involving a loud, forceful shout.) in a previous life, as the dormitory instructor’s roar shook dust from the ceiling of the hallway.

Ye Xingchen: “……”

The most despairing aspect wasn’t merely standing at attention, but the fact that he also had to split his consciousness to control his female body for a nap!

‘Just try to imagine it.’

‘His male body, standing ramrod straight in the corridor, simultaneously needing to find a way to make his female body, Su Liyue, fall asleep.’

‘And his female body, needing to naturally turn over, drift off, and even ensure it didn’t disrupt the male body’s normal punishment of standing.’

‘This is practically a high-difficulty operation, isn’t it?!’

‘He could then vividly imagine the dormitory instructor’s ‘kind’ inquiry:’

“Student Ye? Why does your expression keep shifting from ferocious to serene?”

‘Then he would hear his own reply,’

“Instructor… might there be a possibility… that I’m actually practicing facial muscle control techniques?”

‘Immediately after, he would witness the instructor silently pulling out a notebook:’

“Add another item: Attempting to deceive a teacher with specious arguments!”
