Chapter 18: Super Repeater Bone Sparrow and Work-Anxious Young Lady

While the teaching session was going on passionately over on that side, Finny’s communication here was actually not particularly pleasant.

Because the little sparrow couldn’t possibly communicate directly with the reaper on the other side, the communication on this end could only take place with the other party’s raven, which in itself was not a problem.

And as everyone knew, due to the bone sparrow’s zombie-like, creepy appearance plus its deformed skeletal structure, normal humans and birds alike wouldn’t look kindly upon such a weak and ugly creature, to call it mere disgust would be putting it lightly.

Finny could clearly feel that if it weren’t for work requirements, the other party wouldn’t even want to speak with her, though she had long since gotten used to such treatment.

After all, a creature whose shoulder blades could protrude to be longer than its body, even acting as legs to walk on—if you asked Finny herself to judge, she would think it looked a bit terrifying too.

Lacking feathers and much flesh, it looked as though its bones were directly exposed to the outside; in the eyes of outsiders, the way she walked probably even looked quite painful.

Of course, a bigger reason was that Finny’s own mood was quite delicate, because she actually knew the raven communicating with her.

Naturally, it was limited to having met a few times; after all, as a trainee raven who had been interning for decades, the little sparrow had personally witnessed batch after batch of spirit ravens become full-fledged ravens.

The raven before her was one of them; its seniority was completely inferior to her own, yet now she still had to politely address the other party as a senior.

“Ah, so annoying. Everyone one of them rises to success, while I’m the only one standing still…”

Flapping her wings as she flew back, the little sparrow’s mood was not particularly good.

Communicating with the other party reminded her of her usual days staying in the underworld.

The only opportunity for a trainee raven to become full-fledged was through this reaper internship assessment; if selected and kept by a passing reaper, one could become full-fledged.

However, assessments didn’t happen all the time; during other times, those who weren’t selected, or those like the little sparrow who passed the assessment but were still brushed off, could only continue staying in the underworld to study and assist with work.

Finny’s social skills were not bad at all, which could be seen from the fact that she possessed decent connections and prestige in the Raven Working Office and various agencies across the underworld.

Yet this didn’t stop Finny from being an outcast among the ravens; it wasn’t that she was unwilling or introverted, but purely due to a delicate situation that made her excluded and difficult to integrate.

Her situation was somewhat like a top-performing high school exam retaker who had repeated for countless sessions; everyone knew this student’s abilities were outstanding, and teachers and students were all willing to grant her face, but differences in every aspect—including age and seniority—made it completely impossible for her to integrate into the student group.

Therefore, seeing batches of junior schoolmates turn into her seniors in the workplace left Finny feeling quite delicate inside, not to mention that this senior wasn’t very keen on talking to her either.

Was the other party in the wrong? It didn’t seem so; they didn’t directly tell you to get lost without saying a word, and all necessary communication had taken place.

“Sigh, my mindset is no good; gotta fix it.”

Flapping her wings, Finny, who was halfway through her flight, suddenly decided to change routes—My body is already completely worn out, so my mind must remain healthy.

Thus, she decided to go look for some fun; since the task wasn’t urgent anyway, wouldn’t it be fine to do it under the guise of investigating? Heh-heh, I’m so smart.

Meanwhile, Mikado’s group, who was still waiting to reunite, knew nothing about this and continued waiting in place for the little sparrow, who had no intention of returning today.

“Gosh, how about we stop waiting and go back to the inn to sleep first? Why wait for her?”

The first to grow impatient was naturally Mikado; for some reason, actually a long time ago—or rather, right when a certain bone sparrow first had the idea of seeking fun—he already had a feeling that he wouldn’t be able to wait for her.

“She didn’t notify us, so let’s keep waiting; it wouldn’t be good if we missed her, and if there’s information, it’s best to exchange it promptly in the first instance.”

As she spoke, Belladonna didn’t think too much of it; Mikado was a problem student with poor patience in school to begin with, so she simply assumed he was venting frustration from waiting too long.

“Don’t look at Finny as just a bone sparrow; she’s the most experienced senior among us. If nothing went wrong and she simply wasn’t coming back, she would definitely say so.”

“No, wait, how would she say it? Telepathy across space? Normally, I can’t even understand her speech.”

So that’s why I said you should listen more in class… Wait? You don’t know?

Belladonna originally wanted to scoff a bit, but realizing it after the fact, the problem student beside her truly seemed to be an idiot who knew nothing; could it be that what he said earlier wasn’t just venting frustration?

“Hold on, tell me first: do you have a gut feeling in your heart that we won’t be able to wait for Finny, and that she’s not coming back today, right?”

“To be honest, yeah, I’ve had it for quite a while… What’s wrong?”

What’s wrong?! You still have the nerve to ask what’s wrong?!

Hydra directly collapsed onto Belladonna’s shoulder, while Belladonna wished she could slap this kid twice on the face.

It was way too bizarre—a bunch of people waited here for half a day, only to turn out that you kid had received the news long ago and didn’t report it!

However, considering that he truly didn’t know, Belladonna couldn’t really blame him either… Fine, blame me for not telling you what was going on earlier.

“You have a contractual connection with her! Even if it’s temporary, it still exists! There is a mental telepathy between reapers and ravens!”

Although it was subtle, one could still summarize and build up patterns and unspoken chemistry over time.

Normally, this person and sparrow pair should be able to perceive each other’s moods and the like, which was one manifestation of it.

“That wasn’t some random feeling—she sent you a message that she wasn’t coming back, and delivered it to you in the form of this mood and mindset, giving you a gut feeling that she wouldn’t return… I beg you, go back and read some books, seriously.”

“Oh, so that’s how it is. Then can we go back to the inn now?”

Mikado clapped his palm with a look of sudden realization, as if the group waiting around for half a day for nothing had nothing to do with him, making Belladonna so angry that she couldn’t help grabbing the back of his neck.

“Go back, go back, go back, all you know is going back! Did we achieve any results today? Is there any task progress? Hurry up and follow me to investigate; we had already stumbled upon relevant clues earlier!”

Having spent the whole day focusing on teaching, there was zero movement on task progress, which was intolerable for Belladonna.

For a serious person like her, efficiency above all was the absolute rule; having no progress in work was practically a waste of everyone’s life!

There had to be some progress every day; today had already wasted a lot of time waiting here, and now you want to rest? Isn’t waiting for someone part of resting? We didn’t do anything here, did we?

Hurry up and make up for the rest for me! When the time comes and the task isn’t finished, what will happen to our assessment? I don’t want to fail!

“Honor student, you’re way too anxious…”

“Shut up! It’s you who’s too relaxed! How can you afford to rest at your age?!”
