Chapter 19: A Mutant’s Homecoming

The View from the Sky

Helgen was breathtaking from above.

At night, the city was even more mesmerizing. The lights from the entertainment district illuminated the heart of the city, while the canals shimmered like a celestial river cutting through the darkness.

For Lucy, watching this view alone was a quiet pleasure.

But tonight, solitude was not an option.

She wasn’t alone.

Flying Through the Air

“Huh..! Huh..! We’re flying!?”

For the twentieth time, Perry shouted in disbelief.

Suspended in the air, held tightly by Lucy, she could barely keep her mouth shut in astonishment. She firmly held on to her wrists , as if afraid , that she might slip away into the night sky.

A child carrying another child.

They had managed to get their hands on another floating cape, but since Perry had no clue how to use it, they were forced to travel in this rather comical manner.

Their destination: Harmiel Village.

Perry’s birthplace. The place where she had been separated from her younger brother long ago.

Tonight, they were setting out to reunite them.

Though she found the whole thing a little unfair, Lucy decided to keep her thoughts to herself. She had some time to spare, and, more importantly, she saw value in letting Perry experience something out of the ordinary. It might make her more willing to follow her requests in the future.

“Are you really… going to let me meet my younger brother?” Perry asked hesitantly.

It was hard to believe a princess would go to such lengths for her.

Perhaps to ground herself, she pinched her cheek multiple times, checking whether this was all just a dream.

“A promise is a promise,” Lucy said casually. “Besides, I’ve been stuck studying in my room for too long. I needed a change of pace.”

Perry fell silent.

“Alright, I’m speeding up.”

“Huh? Wait, aren’t we fast enough!?”

According to the map, Harmiel Village was located near the northern border, roughly 180 kilometers away.

To arrive in time, Lucy needed to pick up the pace.

With a quick burst of magic, she activated her acceleration skill.

“Uggaaaa!!” Perry howled in terror as they shot forward.

Using just 20% of her magical energy, Lucy covered the distance in an hour.

Harmiel Village

The village was modest, nestled at the outskirts of civilization.

With around 500 households, all made of wood, there were no walls or fences guarding them. The air smelled of damp earth and burning firewood. It was the kind of place that had remained unchanged for generations.

Perry, wide-eyed, took in the familiar surroundings.

She was home.

“Well, shall we go in?” Lucy asked.

“Yes… but can I just walk in like this?”

“Oh, right. That would be a problem.”

A girl in a maid’s outfit and a princess’s dress would certainly cause a stir in such a rural setting.

Lucy pulled out two gray robes from her inventory. They covered themselves from head to toe before stepping forward.

“Alright, let’s go.”

Perry nodded.

Entering the Village

At the entrance, a young man, presumably a village guard, sat slumped over in a chair, dozing off with a spear resting against his shoulder.

It seemed security wasn’t much of a concern here.

‘If a thief came by, they wouldn’t even need to try,’ Lucy mused.

Slipping past the oblivious guard, they entered the village.

As expected, the place was silent, not a single soul in sight.

“Do you remember where your house is?” Lucy asked.

“Yes, just around this corner.”

Following Perry’s lead, they soon arrived at a small wooden house surrounded by a flimsy fence. It was a simple, single-story structure. A wooden swing hung in the yard, swaying slightly in the wind.

Through the window, a family of three sat gathered for dinner.

Among them was a child—Perry’s younger sibling.

“That’s your family, right?” Lucy started to ask, but before she could finish, Perry ducked down, quickly hiding himself.

She followed his lead, crouching beside him. “Didn’t you want to see your little brother?”

“Just seeing them like this is enough.”

Lucy frowned. Something was off.

“Why don’t you go in?”

Perry hesitated before answering. “Because I’m a mutant. The village thought I was cursed and kicked me out. If they knew I came back… my family might be in danger.”

Lucy sighed. A tale as old as time.

Superstitions ran deep in small, isolated villages. Mutants were seen as omens of misfortune, cast away without second thought.

She glanced back at Perry’s family. The atmosphere was warm, but the meal before them was pitiful—two small pieces of bread and a plate of greens. Even from a distance, Lucy could see how meager their portions were.

Perry clenched Lucy’s sleeve, her voice barely above a whisper. “Lucy… can you help them?”

“You want me to give them money?”

She hadn’t expected that.

Her parents had abandoned her, yet she still cared about their well-being.

“The village chief ordered them to cast me out. They had no choice,” Perry murmured, her gaze fixed on her family.

Lucy exhaled. “Fine.”

She pulled out a small pouch from her inventory and handed it to her.

Ten gold coins.

Enough to feed them for a year.

Perry’s eyes widened at the sight of the gold.

“The window’s open. I’ll just toss it in. That okay?”

“Yes… I think that’ll work.”

Lucy was about to throw the pouch when something caught her eye—the old hairpin in Perry’s hair.

“How long have you had that?” she asked.

“Since I was little.”

“Give it to me.”

Perry hesitated but eventually handed it over. Lucy placed it inside the pouch before tossing it through the window.

The bag landed on the table with a soft thud. Inside the house, murmurs of confusion erupted.

Grabbing Perry’s hand, Lucy hurried away before they were spotted.

Perry let out a breath of relief. “Thank you.”

Lucy simply nodded. “Time to go home.”

And with that, they soared back toward Helgen.

With that, the work was done.

All that was left was to return to Satan Castle.

Lucy flew with all her might toward Helligen.

Though it wasn’t her first time anymore, Perry still looked terrified.

Days Later

The night flight had given Perry a cold, but thanks to the palace’s medicine, she recovered quickly.

Since then, she had been diligently learning her duties as a maid under Rubia’s guidance.

One evening, Lucy lay sprawled on her bed, engrossed in her exam textbook.

Perry sat nearby, quietly taking notes on Lucy’s mannerisms. Every habit, every quirk—she documented them all. Her mission was to impersonate Lucy when needed, and she was determined to master the role.

Knock, knock.

“Princess, I’m coming in.”

Rubia entered, pushing a trolley stacked with desserts. Upon seeing Lucy’s ungraceful position, she scowled.

“Princess! A person of high standing must always uphold dignity, even in private. And Perry, you mustn’t just stand by—you should correct her behavior.”

She gave Perry a light tap on the head before setting the apple pie and tea on the table.

“It’s almost time,” Rubia remarked.

“For what?”

“The entrance exam, of course.”

The exam was only a day away.

Rubia looked anxious, but Lucy? She simply smirked.

“This should be fun.”
