She asked if he had nothing to say. No, he had plenty. So much that it was a problem.
“I don’t know what you want to talk to me about, but you said you’d tell me anything. You told me to ask. Do you want me to write up a document showing everything that happened during the seven years I dated Park Gyujin?”
“That’s not what I meant, but since I’m the one dating Gyujin oppa now, if you still have feelings for him…” Seoyeon flinched as she spoke.
She wasn’t a bad person—just sheltered, an immature adult still clinging to some strange romantic fantasy about love. Yehyeon knew that too. But just because her actions lacked malice didn’t mean Yehyeon wasn’t irritated.
“Regrets? Do I have regrets? You saw me that day.”
Seoyeon had seen Yehyeon at his worst—the shabby ex standing in front of the flashy new lover. That day, in front of Gyujin, Seoyeon was the perfect winner. And now, the woman who had made him so miserable was scratching at his nerves with an innocent face.
“That guy Park Gyujin, after seven years together, when I walked out looking like a wreck, he didn’t even pretend to stop me. Didn’t you hear what he said? He asked if I really thought we’d get married.”
“Well, since I’m his fiancée…” Seoyeon said, struggling not to raise her voice.
“Right. You’re the fiancée, and I was just someone he dated for a while. Park Gyujin was kind enough to make that clear. There’s a limit to getting under someone’s skin, did you really have to come all the way here?”
“If I upset you, I’m sorry. But there’s no need to get this angry, is there?” Seoyeon started to put up a front, pretending to be tough. “If you say no, then it’s no. It’s not like you have anything to hide, so why are you so worked up?”
Seoyeon narrowed her eyes as if she were making a point.
He had initially sat down thinking he would just ignore whatever nonsense this was, but Yehyeon had already forgotten his initial resolve and was grinding his teeth. He wanted Seoyeon to feel betrayed by Gyujin too—as much as he had, or at least a fraction of it.
“I never went to find Park Gyujin first, and I never will. Oh, but he came to see me.”
“What?”
At Yehyeon’s words, Seoyeon’s expression visibly hardened. Seeing her shocked face, Yehyeon continued.
“Your precious fiancé Park Gyujin came to my house and talked nonsense. But I never went to him first.”
“Why would oppa…” Seoyeon’s face turned pale. She had thought everything was settled with him, that he wouldn’t waver. “…That’s a lie, right? Oppa didn’t even check his phone that day, he only stayed by my side. He said he’d spend the whole weekend cheering me up.”
“I know. He said he couldn’t contact me all weekend because he was comforting you.”
“That can’t be…” Seoyeon said, looking shocked. “No. It’s a lie, right? I can’t believe that. Even if it’s true, it won’t make me break up with oppa.”
If she believed him so little, why did she come here? Yehyeon smiled, lifting one corner of his mouth.
“Whether you break up or not has nothing to do with me. Why would I lie about that? I have a much better boyfriend now, so I have no feelings left for that kind of man.”
“A new boyfriend so soon after breaking up? You’re just trying to save face. Isn’t that a bit much?” Seoyeon said, one hand trembling slightly.
“I thought I’d become pretty famous this past week, but I guess not.”
“What do you mean?”
“Actor Kang Lee Jeong’s non-celebrity lover is me.” Yehyeon smiled brightly. Of course, it wasn’t true, but since everyone thought so and they had agreed to play along, this much was fine.
“That’s you? Ha, you should at least lie believably.”
“Whether it’s true or not, just search for it. Why don’t you look it up right now? The video is a bit blurry, but people who know me can tell it’s me.”
At Yehyeon’s words, Seoyeon slowly reached for her phone. After searching with a serious face, she confirmed Yehyeon’s words and dropped her phone onto the table.
“…Did you make some kind of deal behind the scenes? Dating a celebrity right after a breakup, that’s too unrealistic.”
Even a broken clock is right twice a day; that saying fit perfectly. Struck in a sore spot, Yehyeon said, “A deal? That’s rude to say to people who are dating well.”
Finally calming down after seeing Seoyeon’s distorted face, Yehyeon stood up.
“I’m too busy and happy dating my man right now to think about someone like Park Gyujin. I have no intention of contacting him first, so keep your boyfriend in check. I don’t want to be involved either.”
“…”
Yehyeon left the cafe with a relaxed expression. Seoyeon bowed her head, gripping her fist tightly under the table.
“…Where are you?” After sitting still for a long time, Seoyeon called Gyujin.
“Shin Yehyeon, pathetic. Pathetic…”
Once outside, Yehyeon was having a deep moment of self-realization. It wasn’t that he still had feelings for Gyujin. He knew very well how his ex viewed him, and even if Gyujin suddenly came back, he wouldn’t take him back. But not having lingering feelings didn’t mean he didn’t feel miserable.
A pretty face, a bright personality, a life with no hardships, wealth, and even the man he had loved until just a week ago—standing in front of someone who had everything made him feel so shabby. He couldn’t compare to Seoyeon in any aspect. Maybe he was slightly better in terms of professional ability, but with that kind of wealth, ability didn’t matter.
That was clear just from looking at Gyujin. Even at the university they both attended, Yehyeon had gotten in on a scholarship through hard study, while Gyujin had entered through a family donation.
So Yehyeon had tried to maintain his pride in front of her. He had managed to talk back to some extent and eventually make Seoyeon shut up, but he felt even more depressed than before.
“But I guess it’s fortunate…”
Getting involved with Lee Jeong wasn’t exactly pleasant, but at least today he had something to flaunt in front of Seoyeon. Even if it was all a lie, he could at least pretend to be confident.
Zing—
At that moment, Yehyeon’s phone rang and the screen lit up. Squatting down, he checked the source of the vibration.
[ ♡: Did you get home safe? PM 8:27 ]
Why was it that in a situation like this, the person who looked after him was none other than his contract boyfriend? Yehyeon stared blankly at the screen.
[ ♡: No weird people today? PM 8:28 ]
Even though he knew it was just kindness for the sake of the act, his heart felt strange. How could he hate someone who spoke kindly to him in a difficult moment?
[ I got home safe. Nothing unusual. PM 8:31 ]
Yehyeon typed nonchalantly, pretending everything was fine. Actually, plenty of unusual things had happened, and now he was going through a moment of reflection because of it, but he didn’t want to show Lee Jeong his pathetic side.
[ ♡: That’s good PM 8:31 ] [ ♡: Be careful going to work tomorrow. See you on the weekend. I have a dawn shoot starting tonight, so I’m going in now. PM 8:32 ]
Was it because he was an actor, or was he naturally attentive? Lee Jeong kept breaking through Yehyeon’s defenses. Even though he knew their relationship was just a contract born from bad blood, his kind words managed to lift his mood.
“It’s just because the breakup is recent. My mind is complicated. Get a grip, Shin Yehyeon. Don’t be stupid, don’t act stupid.”
After sitting there for a while, Yehyeon got up and brushed off his clothes. Still, it was a bit embarrassing that he had genuinely gotten angry at a girl who only knew about romance. Yehyeon slapped his own cheeks with both hands.
“Cold…”
He had slapped his cheeks to come to his senses, but now the cold wind made them sting. Yehyeon took out the scarf from his bag and wrapped it around his neck. The red scarf, famous and as expensive as its reputation, was now around his neck.
“Rich people probably don’t care about a scarf like this.”
The soft, warm fabric wrapped around Yehyeon’s neck. Two million won might be overdoing it, but it was definitely incomparably expensive compared to an ordinary scarf, and yet Lee Jeong had just given it to him. Rich people really were different.
Yehyeon struggled to push away his depressing thoughts and started walking home, unaware that the events of today were like dominoes set in motion by someone’s words.
