Chapter 3: The Foxtail Grass Ring

Xu Sui’an poked Shi Yubai’s flawless profile with an indignant pout.

“Blockhead Bai, did you forget?”

“When you confessed to me, we promised there would be a foxtail grass ring.”

“You confessed to me three times…”

“And not once did you prepare a foxtail grass ring…”

Her voice was full of grievance and quiet resentment.

Her heart ached so much it felt like it was bleeding.

In the original story’s ending…

Shi Yubai married Ruan Qingqing.

Xu Sui’an died clutching two foxtail grass rings in her hands.

“A foxtail grass ring?”

Childhood memories flooded back all at once.

The scene became vividly clear.

A tiny Xu Sui’an wore a flower crown as she hooked her little finger around Shi Yubai’s.

“Little Bai, we’ll always be together.”

“These two foxtail grass rings are our promise.”

Joy burst into Shi Yubai’s eyes.

He grabbed Xu Sui’an’s hands.

“Suisui…

So you didn’t reject me because you didn’t like me.”

“You were angry…”

“Because I forgot the foxtail grass ring?”

Xu Sui’an reached into her pocket.

She took out two carefully woven foxtail grass rings.

Her eyes reddened again.

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Every time you confessed…”

“I had already prepared the rings.”

“But every single time…”

“You forgot our promise.”

“And this time…”

“You even said you didn’t want me anymore.”

“After I rejected you…”

“It hurt so much to see how sad you were.”

“I wanted to take out the rings…”

“And confess to you instead.”

“If you accidentally forgot…”

“Then it’s enough if I remember.”

“Using the foxtail grass rings as our token of love…”

“Would have fulfilled our promise.”

“But…”

“But…”

“You threw away the roses.”

“You left without even looking back.”

“I cried while calling your name…”

“And you never turned around…”

Xu Sui’an lowered her head.

Her tears slipped silently down her face.

Shi Yubai’s hands trembled as he held the two foxtail grass rings.

His heart hurt terribly.

A tidal wave of guilt crashed over him…

Mixed with overwhelming joy.

“Suisui…

I’m sorry.”

“This is my fault.”

“I forgot something so important.”

“I thought that now that we’d grown up…”

“You liked roses.”

“So when I confessed…”

“I never prepared a foxtail grass ring.”

‘No wonder she rejected me.’

‘It’s all my fault.’

‘How could I forget something so important?’

‘Damn it…’

‘This is all Ruan Qingyang’s fault!’

‘When he saw me weaving the rings, he laughed and said they were too childish.’

‘He said no girl would ever like something like that.’

‘Who would choose foxtail grass over red roses?’

‘Otherwise…’

‘I would’ve succeeded two years ago.’

‘I wasted two whole years for nothing.’

Xu Sui’an blinked.

She picked up one of the rings.

“Shi Yubai.”

“I’m giving you one more chance.”

“Will you be my boyfriend?”

It didn’t matter who confessed first.

No matter what…

She was locking down his title today.

“I will!”

“Becoming your boyfriend has always been my dream!”

Shi Yubai immediately dropped to one knee.

His long, fair hand reached toward her.

Without the slightest hesitation…

Xu Sui’an slipped the foxtail grass ring onto his finger.

“Shi Yubai…”

“My dream-come-true boyfriend.”

Shi Yubai stood up.

He swept Xu Sui’an into his arms and spun her around happily.

“Xu Sui’an…”

“My girlfriend!”

With utmost care…

He placed the other foxtail grass ring onto Xu Sui’an’s right hand.

Then he lowered his head.

And gently kissed the back of her hand.

A pledge of love.

Xu Sui’an’s mood instantly brightened.

The weight hanging over her heart finally disappeared.

She intertwined her fingers with Shi Yubai’s.

The matching foxtail grass rings gleamed brightly on their hands.

Click.

The moment was captured forever.

Their intertwined hands looked as though they had always belonged together.

“Xiaobai.”

“Now that you’re wearing my ring…”

“You’re mine.”

“You’d better think this through.”

“In my world…”

“There is no such thing as breaking up.”

“We haven’t gone public yet.”

“So…”

“You still have time to change your mind.”

Xu Sui’an gently swung their clasped hands as she looked at him seriously.

“Suisui…”

“I already belong to you.”

“Even if you chased me away…”

“I still wouldn’t leave.”

“Being with you…”

“Has been my dream ever since I was little.”

The first thing Shi Yubai did was post on Moments.

Just one sentence.

And one photo.

[Xu Sui’an. My wish has finally come true. In this lifetime, there’s only you. —Shi Yubai]

Smiling softly, Xu Sui’an made a post of her own.

It featured the very same photo.

Their fingers intertwined.

The foxtail grass rings serving as proof of their promise.

[Shi Yubai. You were my past, you’re my present, and you’ll be my future. —Xu Sui’an]

Xu Sui’an’s eyelids gradually grew heavy.

Exhaustion washed over her like a tide.

After running…

Crying…

And riding an emotional roller coaster…

Her body finally gave out.

“So tired…”

It was only two simple words.

Yet Shi Yubai’s heart softened immediately.

He wrapped her gently in his arms.

“Suisui…”

“Lean on me and get some rest.”

“We’ll celebrate later.”

“Xiaobai…”

“Stay with me…”

Xu Sui’an’s sleepy voice was full of dependence.

Her fingers stubbornly clutched his sleeve.

“Okay.”

Shi Yubai’s heart melted like cotton candy.

Soft.

Sweet.

Fortunately…

His heart was still young enough to survive today’s emotional roller coaster.

One moment drowning in despair.

The next soaring in boundless joy.

He lowered his head.

A gentle kiss landed on the center of her forehead.

Then another.

And another.

As though only by kissing her again and again…

Could he convince himself that this wasn’t all a dream.

Outside the stairwell…

Ruan Qingyang was growing increasingly impatient.

He glared at Zhuang Yan.

“Zhuang Yan.”

“Open the door.”

“Aren’t you afraid Xu Sui’an might hurt Brother Shi?”

“Hurt him?”

Zhuang Yan snorted.

“Xu Sui’an isn’t some man-eating tiger.”

“And even if she really did eat Brother Shi…”

“He’d probably be smiling the whole time.”

Scrolling through his phone, Zhuang Yan couldn’t hide the grin at the corners of his mouth.

He immediately liked Shi Yubai’s Moments post.

[Congratulations, Brother Shi! Finally got the girl of your dreams!]

Ruan Qingyang rolled his eyes.

He shoved Zhuang Yan aside.

“What do you know?”

“Hasn’t Brother Shi suffered enough these past two years?”

“He answered every one of Xu Sui’an’s calls.”

“He spoiled her in every possible way.”

“There are countless girls at Southern University who like him.”

“If he simply nodded…”

“Which one would reject him?”

“But Xu Sui’an…”

“She relied on being his childhood sweetheart.”

“She rejected him over and over again.”

“And Brother Shi…”

“That idiot only ever had eyes for her.”

“But what did it get him?”

“Nothing.”

“A real brother should wake him up.”

“Not let him keep making the same mistake.”

Zhuang Yan made no attempt to stop him.

After all…

Everything had already been settled.

“Qingyang.”

“You’ve never truly fallen in love.”

“So you don’t understand why Brother Shi did all of this willingly.”

“If he hadn’t wanted it himself…”

“Who could ever force Shi Yubai to compromise?”

“It doesn’t matter how wonderful other girls are.”

“None of them could ever catch his eye.”

“His entire heart…”

“Has always belonged to his little childhood sweetheart.”

“There isn’t room for anyone else.”

Ruan Qingyang remained unconvinced.

“Brother Shi already decided to give up this time.”

“We should’ve kept Xu Sui’an outside.”

“I really don’t know what favors she did for you.”

“You even helped her get inside.”

“Who knows what kind of scheme she’s plotting now?”

“Why let her keep hurting Brother Shi?”

Zhuang Yan merely raised an eyebrow.

He said nothing else.

Facts spoke louder than words.

The moment the door opened…

Ruan Qingyang hurried into the stairwell.

“Brother Shi!”

His eyes widened.

Xu Sui’an had fallen asleep against Shi Yubai’s shoulder.

Shi Yubai was a clean freak.

He hated people getting too close to him.

Except…

Xu Sui’an had always been the sole exception.

“You and her…”

Shi Yubai’s brows relaxed.

His peach blossom eyes sparkled like they were filled with stars.

Even the tiny crimson beauty mark on his left dimple seemed brighter with happiness.

He deliberately lifted the hand wearing the foxtail grass ring and waved it in front of Ruan Qingyang and Zhuang Yan.

“As you can see…”

“My wish finally came true.”

“Starting today…”

“I’m officially taken.”

“Congratulations!”

Zhuang Yan immediately grinned and offered his blessings.

Then he eagerly shared the wonderful news with his “queen” on WeChat—

The lovers had finally become a couple.

Ruan Qingyang felt as though something were lodged in his throat.

Only after a long silence did he finally find his voice.

“Shi Yubai…”

“Are you serious?”

What was going on?

Didn’t Xu Sui’an reject him?

Then what was this?

What about his little sister?

Did she still have a chance?

He regretted it.

He should have introduced Qingqing to Shi Yubai sooner.

One missed step…

Led to countless more.

Some opportunities vanish the instant they’re missed.

And fate…

Never waits for anyone.
