Name, school, address—fine, he’d stalked enough to know those. But birthday and awakener registration number? How the hell did he know those?

Lee Chae didn’t even want to know.

The real lunatic is me for ever thinking I liked this guy even for a second.

“Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t like the number?”

Just as Lee Chae was about to explode, the door opened and a group of guides poured in, portable pads in hand.

Another perfect timing ruined—irritation surged.

“Hey, it’s Esper Cha Haejin.”

“No way… in broad daylight at a phone store…? Wait—”

“It really is Cha Haejin!”

After confirming among themselves, the guides rushed toward Haejin, shoving Lee Chae aside without even seeing him.

Already drained from everything today, Lee Chae lost balance and crashed to the floor.

“Esper Cha Haejin-nim, can we take a picture?”

“I-I want an autograph too!”

Even with someone on the ground, they clung to Haejin’s arms like their lives depended on it.

“F*ck.”

Haejin spat the curse, shook them off, and came straight to Lee Chae.

He offered a hand.

“You okay?”

Lee Chae smacked it away and stood up alone.

How many times today had he looked pathetic in front of this guy?

He hated himself for it.

“Esper-nim, won’t you take a photo?”

One oblivious guide approached.

Haejin smiled—the kind that could freeze the room.

“Where you going? You wanted a picture, right?”

The voice was so cold it made knees buckle.

The guide froze.

Haejin snatched the phone from the trembling hand and casually threw it to the floor.

“Are you insane?”

“What, you feel bad for the phone hitting the ground?”

“…”

“Even if you ate your manners with a spoon, you don’t ignore an injured person.”

“…”

“You hurt my exclusive guide—at least apologize.”

“E-exclusive…?”

Every gaze except Haejin’s locked onto Lee Chae.

Lee Chae, more furious that Cha Haejin knew his private info than about falling, ruffled his hair like a madman, grabbed Haejin’s wrist, and yanked.

He wanted to drag him out, but strength difference made it impossible—so it was just a “stop it” grip.

“You can’t just break someone’s phone like that. Do you know how much that costs…?”

The owner protested.

Haejin pulled cash from his wallet and flung it on the floor.

“Money’s there too. Happy? Come find me if it’s not enough.”

What a spectacle.

Lee Chae had heard the rumors about his awful personality, but this was next level.

The other side wasn’t innocent, but smashing a phone and throwing money was excessive.

Yet they could only tremble.

The seasoned manager broke the silence.

“Esper Cha Haejin-nim, registration complete. How would you like the billing?”

Haejin wrote his account like nothing happened.

The manager handed over the packaged phone.

“Here you are.”

Haejin dangled it.

“What are you doing? You said you’re busy—take it and let’s go.”

Lee Chae took it in a daze and was dragged out.

He worried about the guides inside, but they didn’t even glance his way.

What was the Guide Rights Charter again…?

What if they used this to threaten or report him?

Even an S-class could be disciplined for harming a guide outside combat.

Following Haejin, Lee Chae finally spoke when the bus stop was near.

“Hey, Cha Haejin.”

“Yeah, baby?”

He answered with a bright smile, as if he hadn’t been murderous seconds ago.

“Did you really have to do that? They didn’t do anything that wrong… you were you always this sensitive?”

“Were you scared?”

“No, that’s not… You can’t just treat guides like that. They didn’t mean harm, they just wanted a picture…”

Haejin looked at him and smirked with one corner of his mouth.

“Jung Lee Chae. Do you really think those bastards wanted a picture because they like me?”

Of course not. Even Lee Chae, who paid zero attention to awakeners, knew that much.

“They wanted to latch on for status. Makes me wanna puke.”

Haejin grimaced like he was genuinely nauseated.

So what if they wanted status?

In a world where you starve without high rank or civil service job, wanting to climb was human instinct.

But of course a greenhouse flower raised in luxury wouldn’t understand the thoughts of low-rank people.

The realization soured Lee Chae’s mood instantly.

“You’re going too far. What’s wrong with wanting to rise? I’m killing myself studying for the same reason—guess I make you wanna puke too?”

“What kind of bullshit is that?”

“It’s true. Wanting to imprint with a good esper for status, or studying to succeed—what’s the difference? They’re the same.”

“Fox tricks and honest effort are heaven and earth apart.”

“Fox tricks? Finding a compatible esper and guiding hard is honest effort—it’s a needed skill these days, society demands—”

Lee Chae’s voice kept rising—he was about to launch into awakener mental management and the entire Guide Rights Charter.

“Wait. Lee Chae-ya, snap out of it.”

Haejin stopped him. He had to clear this up.

If Lee Chae was right, what just happened wasn’t a hero saving his guide, but a trashy esper throwing a tantrum.

He didn’t care what others thought, but he didn’t want Lee Chae thinking he was garbage.

Lee Chae lowered his voice.

“I’m right.”

“You’re not wrong, but… you almost got hurt just now.”

“That’s not the point…”

“Hey—guides, espers—why do we exist?”

“To protect humanity from danger…”

Halfway through, realization hit; Lee Chae’s eyes widened.

“Right. And the things that are supposed to protect humanity ignore a fallen person to flirt with a high-rank esper—does that seem right? If a single monster showed up in that store, they’d ditch the photo and run. I despise that attitude. Still wrong?”

Lee Chae shut his mouth.

Avoiding eye contact, fidgeting fingers—looked like he was finally convinced.

Right then, a little kid came sprinting and crashed into Lee Chae.

Lee Chae, looking elsewhere, instinctively stepped aside—so the child fell.

“Gah.”

Haejin instantly caught the kid, brushed off butt and knees, and asked if he was okay.

The child nodded, teary.

“Be careful. Where’s Mommy?”

The kid pointed; a pale woman ran over and hugged him.

“Thank you so much.”

“He seems fine, but check again.”

Haejin smiled brightly at the child.

“If you run like that again, a monster will catch you.”

The kid gasped.

The woman bowed again and left.

From Mom’s shoulder, the kid peeked out and waved at Haejin.

Haejin waved back, then looked at the dazed Lee Chae.

“You okay?”

“Yeah… just a kid bumped into me.”

Then, as if he’d been waiting, his lips moved.

“About what I said earlier…”

“What, the fox tricks thing?”

“Yeah. You’re right that people should be saved first, all of it. But… can you just listen to me regardless of reasons?”

Suddenly switching to formal speech threw Haejin off—he let out a confused “Huh?”

Lee Chae stepped closer, eyes wide, and grabbed his arm.

Static snapped where their skin touched.

“I’d… like it if you— no, if hyung weren’t so sensitive in front of others. They were wrong, but… I worry.”

Hyung…

Haejin tried to play it cool, but cold sweat poured down his back at the sweet formal speech.

Just a light touch and polite words—his body and heart were going haywire.

“No need. I won’t do it again.”

“Good. Much better when we talk.”

Lee Chae gave a tiny smile and turned his head.

Haejin stared blankly at his side profile.
