Lee Chae even added fuel to the fire.
“We had a deal. You promised not to be annoying.”
He kept giving Haejin the side-eye, like having both men there made him uncomfortable.
Haejin’s temper screamed to grab Lee Chae’s hand and drag him away right now, but the fear of future consequences stopped him.
Better to disappear now than be hated later.
Still, the sinister aura coming off that pest made it hard to move.
After a second of hesitation, Haejin chose retreat.
There were two classes before lunch anyway. He could come back then.
‘No need to earn his hate for nothing.’
“I’ll pick you up at lunch. Your last class before that is Building Y, right?”
“Yeah.”
“See you.”
Haejin shot the guy one last glare and turned.
Maybe it was his imagination, but a stinging gaze burned the back of his head.
He headed straight to Legion. Plan: wake drunk Jae-hyung and make him spy.
When Haejin arrived, Jae-hyung was coming out of his room, hair a mess, using his hand as a comb.
“What? You already dropped sister-in-law off?”
“Yeah.”
“Should’ve waited and eaten lunch together.”
“We agreed I’d stop tailing him everywhere in exchange for the phone. I’ll go at lunch. That’s not important right now—Jae-hyung, come here a sec.”
Afraid Jin-woo would overhear, Haejin pulled Jae-hyung into the bedroom.
Jae-hyung followed with a dying face, probably hungover.
“Hey, can you still spy?”
“…I can, but if Jin-woo hyung finds out he’ll kill me. It’s only supposed to be for official combat—”
Haejin quickly covered his mouth.
“I know, I know. Emergency. I’ve got a bad feeling.”
“You have dog-shit instincts.”
“F*ck off, it’s not romance instincts—it’s combat instincts!”
Jae-hyung’s eyes widened.
Haejin’s battlefield sixth sense was near-perfect even to a scout-type espers like himself.
He looked worried.
“This morning someone came looking for Lee Chae… actually, I felt something yesterday at the cleanup crew too…”
Haejin paused.
He wasn’t sure if he should say the creepy vibe came from Yeo-jun without proof.
“If it’s combat instincts… we have to act fast. Tell me.”
“It’s just— f*ck, hard to explain…”
Right then—
WEEEE—WEEEE—
The alarm that signaled enemy attack blared.
It had been ages since it last sounded.
They only rang it when civilian lives were truly threatened.
Both stared at each other, then changed into combat uniforms as if choreographed.
If the attack was near the school, Lee Chae could be in danger.
The pest’s bad vibe suddenly didn’t matter.
WEE… WEE…
The Legion broadcast siren rang again, followed by Jin-woo’s voice.
“This is A-rank Esper Sung Jin-woo. All Legion members assume combat readiness and assemble in front of Legion immediately. I repeat—”
Jin-woo had never sounded that agitated.
Had he run into a monster face-to-face? Or seen an overwhelming shadow army?
Impossible to guess.
Haejin and Jae-hyung rushed outside.
Jin-woo was loading gear into the combat vehicle.
“What’s going on? Why all the equipment?”
“No time to explain. You’ll see when we get there.”
A call came from headquarters: all high-rank espers to Building A immediately.
Everyone in the building boarded vehicles.
But…
“What the hell…”
From the school gate, shadows swarmed like zombies, blocking Legion vehicles from entering.
The fog they created made it impossible to see ahead.
Jae-hyung instantly focused and peered through the mist.
“Uh-oh…”
“What?”
“Something’s wrong. There are no shadows anywhere else—only around us.”
“That doesn’t make sense. Headquarters called every high-rank esper—there are over ten cars trying to get in. Why just us?”
“Dunno… weird…”
Jae-hyung frowned and concentrated again.
His third-eye scouting never failed.
“No mistake. A ton of shadows are surrounding only our vehicle. That’s why we can’t see.”
“What about the other cars?”
“They don’t care if they go in or not.”
He sounded certain.
Shadows only blocking them—Haejin couldn’t understand it.
Was it because of the instinct he felt yesterday?
Chills ran down his spine.
“No time. Abandon weapons, we go on foot.”
Haejin reached for the door; Jin-woo grabbed his wrist.
“Cha Haejin. This is a school. Enemy numbers are way higher—what the hell are you planning?”
“They’re just shadows. I’ll wipe them all.”
“You lunatic, it’s a school. What if civilians die?”
“F*ck!”
Big attacks were easy when outnumbered, but this was a campus—unknown civilians could be hiding in any building.
He couldn’t go all out.
“Then what the hell do we do? Just watch?”
“Other espers are already inside. Stop thinking you’re the only one who—”
“Wait, wait. The shadows are… talking to me.”
Jin-woo shut up at Jae-hyung’s words.
Lately even the emotionless ones were showing feelings and requesting dialogue.
The mutation speed was accelerating—he could feel it on his skin.
“What are they saying?”
“Jin… Cha Hae… S-rank esper… must… stop…”
Jin-woo couldn’t hide his disbelief.
“Mindless shadows are talking—and they said Cha Haejin’s name?”
“It’s not a mistake. They’re not trying to attack us—they’re trying to keep us from entering the school. What do we do?”
“F*ck.”
If Jae-hyung was right, they were screwed.
They couldn’t fight at the school gate.
They’d have to lure the shadows elsewhere, but if the goal was specifically to stop Haejin from entering, the shadows might not follow.
“Jae-hyung, this is combat situation—you can spy, right?”
“Yes!”
“Check the library right now. Is Jung Lee Chae there?”
Jae-hyung focused briefly—few people in the library, easy to spot.
“He’s there. Treating injured people with a portable pad. Oh? There’s another guide too. Same pad. Non-contact, so probably not high-rank. Weird, didn’t know we had a nice guide who heals low-rank espers too.”
The rest was obvious.
That Yeo-jun guy must be a low-rank guide who works with him.
So Haejin had been overly sensitive after all?
Relief washed over him.
He could focus on the situation.
Jae-hyung, quick on the uptake, stopped spying.
“I’ll switch to surrounding surveillance now.”
“Good. If you can, find out how they know my name and why they’re only blocking our car.”
“Roger!”
Even a shadow captain was just a weak Kelvetero at best.
Blocking the path to save Lee Chae from a suspicious pest? Haejin burned with fighting spirit—he’d obliterate them the moment they showed themselves.
“Situation same as before. They’re not attacking or blocking anyone else. Doesn’t look like they want to fight…”
“Then what the hell? We just stand here and watch? What about civilians?”
“Guides are all hiding. Espers who entered first are forming ranks. According to the scout esper’s signal, there are no shadows inside.”
“What the hell are they trying to do?”
Mindless things couldn’t possibly have strategy.
Was a humanoid monster involved?
The inability to read the situation made anxiety skyrocket.
Then—
BOOOOM!
An explosion outside.
Every esper in the car exchanged looks.
“Where?”
“Outside school—about two kilometers away. We have to go now. Civilians are there.”
“Turn the car around!”
