Chapter 38: The Price of a Promise

“Ajusshi, don’t!”

The moment I recognized Yoon Geon-woo’s state, I instinctively grabbed Ajusshi first. Seeing the black aura rising around him, I felt an inexplicable sense of unease. His expressionless face suggested he was contemplating the disposal of a rampaging Esper, as was his duty as a member of the Center.

“I’ll do it.”

As I clung to him, Ajusshi looked at me as if asking if I’d forgotten how close I’d come to death just moments ago. I hastily added,

“We haven’t even… tried yet.”

Crossing the ‘save point’ meant he had exceeded the Center’s established criteria. In other words, he was beyond the scope of feasible guiding. However, that couldn’t be an absolute standard.

‘Even if something goes wrong…’

While there was no definitive proof, I suspected my inexplicable regressions were connected to Yoon Geon-woo. Each time I faced danger in his presence, I’d been sent back to the past. This gave me a quiet assurance that even if an unforeseen situation arose, I would be fine.

“Five minutes… No, I’ll give you a generous eight.”

Had he confirmed my resolve to guide Yoon Geon-woo? Ajusshi, who had been exuding a black aura as if poised to strike at any moment, relented slightly.

“I can restrain the boy for that long. Go ahead and do as you wish.”

No sooner had he finished speaking than Ajusshi unleashed the suppressed energy as if it were an explosive burst. The isolation room, which had only been shimmering with blue energy, became shrouded in what seemed like a dense black mist, blurring my vision. A chilling aura emanated from it, suggesting this, too, was a manifestation of Ajusshi’s power.

‘Multiple abilities?’

To be able to use more than one ability… Could Ajusshi also be an S-rank Esper? However, I had no time to dwell on Ajusshi’s capabilities at this moment.

*Whoosh—*

In an instant, the mist obscuring my vision dispersed. Thanks to its dissipation, I could see the black mist, presumably Ajusshi’s ability, coiling around Yoon Geon-woo’s entire collapsed form.

“…Yoon Geon-woo!”

I quickly rushed to Yoon Geon-woo’s side. He was glaring at me with eyes brimming with an inexplicable resentment. Though his gaze was fierce, I couldn’t help but feel pity for him, seeing the burst blood vessels in his eyes.

“Damn it… You’re also with the Director…”

Yoon Geon-woo, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke. However, perhaps due to his excessive use of abilities, a gush of blood trickled from his mouth. Each time he spoke, spatters of blood flew from between his teeth, forcing me to stop him.

“Yoon Geon-woo. W-wait. Don’t speak.”

“If I’d known… you were the Director’s puppet… then… Ugh…”

Gasping for breath, Yoon Geon-woo spoke, his voice laden with resentment. But why did he keep mentioning this ‘Director’ since last time?

“Who exactly is this Director?”

I stared at him, my expression one of utter bewilderment, as if I couldn’t comprehend what he was saying. At that, Yoon Geon-woo’s face subtly contorted. His gaze seemed to linger behind me, so I turned to look.

There stood Ajusshi, a step away, observing us intently. He appeared somewhat distracted, likely focused on maintaining the black mist that held Yoon Geon-woo captive.

“The ‘Director’ you’re talking about. Surely… you don’t mean him? Your father?”

As I pressed him, just in case, Yoon Geon-woo unleashed a fierce animosity toward Ajusshi. By the time I realized something was amiss, a torrent of crude curses erupted from Yoon Geon-woo.

“Father, my ass!”

Given his reaction, it became impossible to discern how much truth lay in Ajusshi’s earlier claim of being Yoon Geon-woo’s father. However, there was no time to ascertain the facts here.

“Whoever this ‘Director’ you speak of is, I have nothing to do with them. I just… came to return this to you.”

I pulled out Yoon Geon-woo’s navy handkerchief, which I had hastily stuffed into my pocket. It was an artifact, embroidered with the SAA logo in gold thread.

It was a spur-of-the-moment tactic, but I deliberately avoided the word ‘guiding’ as I approached him. Given how much he’d suffered, it seemed best to steer clear of any sensitive terms.

“You lent it to me to use. But now, I think you need it more than I do, Yoon Geon-woo.”

Holding the handkerchief, I took another step closer to Yoon Geon-woo. Yoon Geon-woo then looked at me with a confused expression. Perhaps he, too, was calculating internally whether he could trust me.

“This time, I’ll… keep my promise. Just like you saved me during the practical training.”

During the practical training, Yoon Geon-woo had kept his promise to ensure I wouldn’t die. Recalling that day, I deliberately used the word ‘promise.’

Yoon Geon-woo seemed to grasp the meaning behind my words. He merely watched me, neither affirming nor denying. Gasping raggedly for air, he resembled a wild beast on the verge of collapsing.

“Can I… wipe this first?”

I pleaded for his permission in an earnest voice. At that, Yoon Geon-woo’s eyelids, which had been fixed on me, slowly lowered. Interpreting this as assent, I gently wiped Yoon Geon-woo’s face with the handkerchief.

Starting from his hollow, parched cheeks splattered with blood, I traced the sharp, prominent line of his jaw. Though my skin didn’t make direct contact, the contours of Yoon Geon-woo’s face seemed to imprint themselves upon my fingertips through the thin silk fabric.

As an artifact distributed by the SAA, the handkerchief proved highly effective. Gazing at Yoon Geon-woo’s partially cleaned face, I slowly rubbed the concave space between his pointed chin and his plump lower lip.

Because of this, Yoon Geon-woo’s firmly sealed lips parted slightly. When I gently inserted a finger into the gap between his lips, I felt him flinch and try to pull away.

‘Hmm, even I thought wiping the inside of his mouth with a handkerchief was a bit much.’ As I slowly withdrew my hand, a string of thick, blood-tinged saliva stretched out. Of course, the artifact immediately absorbed it, leaving no trace.

‘Why is he so hot?’

A scorching heat seemed to gather on Yoon Geon-woo’s face, as if he were running a high fever. With the hand not holding the handkerchief, I pressed against his sweat-drenched forehead.

“Ugh…”

The moment my hand touched his forehead, Yoon Geon-woo’s eyes snapped open. He seemed startled by the sudden skin-to-skin contact. Because of this, I felt an intense spark, accompanied by scorching heat, where our skin met. It was an abnormal temperature, hot enough to burn my hand.

[Matching Rate: 94%]

[Corruption Rate: 95%]

Instinctively checking Yoon Geon-woo’s corruption rate, the chilling figure of 95% flashed into my mind. It seemed a subtle guiding had flowed through in that brief moment. A pained groan escaped Yoon Geon-woo’s lips.

Though his aversion to guiding was profound, with his body in such a critical state, it seemed difficult for him to completely reject the helping hand I offered. I noticed that his entire face, including his eyelids, was now slick with moisture.

His entire body was blazing with a feverish heat. I gradually channeled guiding into him, as if seeking his permission, and felt his gaze grow hazy. In his moist eyes, blue flames seemed to flicker. Like a will-o’-the-wisp luring people astray.

“Yoon Geon-woo, I’m sorry I came late…”

After a simple apology, I cupped Yoon Geon-woo’s face in both my hands. Since Yoon Geon-woo was sprawled on the floor, I inadvertently ended up straddling him, an immodest posture, but I had no time to spare a thought for it. As I slowly lowered my face and took his lips, a surge of raw energy, incomparable to anything before, swirled around us.

At first, I lightly sucked on his blood-tinged lips. I made soft, moist contact, then slowly traced the length of the firmly sealed gap between them. I signaled for him to open his mouth, but Yoon Geon-woo remained stubbornly unresponsive.

[Corruption Rate: 95%]

As expected, the corruption rate remained utterly unchanged.

‘This won’t be enough.’

Was it due to tension? Or was intimate contact guiding still too much for him? If he kept his mouth shut and remained uncooperative like this, I couldn’t proceed with the guiding.

“Haa… Geon-woo, just relax a little.”

To maximize the effect, I needed to thoroughly explore the inner mucous membranes, which meant a deeper kiss. I stopped sucking on his lips and pressed him gently.

“I need to get inside… but it’s not working.”

“Shit. You…”

As I murmured against his lips, Yoon Geon-woo opened his mouth in disbelief. I seized the momentarily parted gap and plunged into Yoon Geon-woo’s mouth.

Yoon Geon-woo thrashed for a moment in surprise, but I firmly held him down. Hoping he would reach his save point, I poured all my guiding into him.

‘Just a little more…’

Kissing Yoon Geon-woo, I slowly stroked his hair. Perhaps it was effective, as Yoon Geon-woo’s movements noticeably grew calmer.

‘Yes, well done. Just like that.’

I offered him unspoken praise for his newfound docility. He seemed to secretly enjoy it, so I gently coaxed him, stroking his thick hair as if petting Bok-sil.

As I persistently sucked at the tender mucous membranes inside, Yoon Geon-woo’s rigidly stiff body seemed to relax considerably. When I used the tip of my tongue to prod at the roof of his mouth, his tongue, which had been deftly avoiding mine, naturally intertwined with it.
