Chapter 4: The Talented Newbie Who Entered Through the Textbook

“How on earth did you clear Nightmare? Didn’t you say you’ve never played VR games before? Even I barely cleared Hard Mode, so how did you!”

“It would be a waste to compare myself to you.”

“Hey!”

Behind the shouting Han Kyutae, Park Seongjin also spoke up, his brow furrowed in serious concentration.

“But seriously, how did you clear it?”

“I just hit them until they broke, I guess?”

“……No. Fine. Let’s say that’s true, but isn’t the 4th-floor mage a complete blackout of your vision? How did you clear that?”

“That one?”

I barely managed to recall the 4th-floor boss, which I had already forgotten while trying to catch the 5th-floor boss, and explained.

“It shows you the patterns one by one at the very beginning. If it goes shiiiik— it’s fire. Shik, shik— it’s ice. Shiiiiik!—that’s thunder. You can deduce the impact location based on the direction of the sound.”

“……Doesn’t it only show you that once?”

“Yeah.”

“You memorized all of that after seeing it once?”

“How do you forget something after seeing it once?”

It was a bit intense, but it wasn’t as difficult as they thought.

It was only hard because it was difficult to locate the enemy to attack; the patterns themselves were fairly simple.

Han Kyutae slapped a hand onto my shoulder.

“Man, the talent that entered Korea University’s Department of Economics as the runner-up is just different. Truly different.”

“What are you talking about all of a sudden?”

“He’s saying you’re the type of person who claims they only studied their textbooks focusing on Korean, English, and Math, buddy.”

Park Seongjin chimed in, crossing his arms seriously as he spoke.

“You definitely seem to have some innate talent.”

“Hmm…. It was manageable. It was actually quite fun.”

“It’s not just ‘manageable.’ A Nightmare tutorial clear hasn’t happened in three years!”

Huh? Three years?

That gap was longer than I expected.

Only then did I understand why the town was so crowded.

I was a historical figure who had cleared the tutorial difficulty for the first time in three years, and that fact had been broadcast to every corner of the world through the global chat.

“That’s a bit longer than I thought.”

I was thinking of playing a bit more since it was fun, but it looked like I was destined to become a celebrity for no reason.

Looking at the friend requests and guild invitations that were still popping up, my head began to throb.

Han Kyutae grabbed my hand.

“Hey, join our guild for now.”

“Guild? I just finished the tutorial.”

“A guild that doesn’t accept someone who cleared the Nightmare tutorial is a crazy guild.”

“Exactly. And we were going to bring you to our guild anyway. The guild leader is Seonhwa Noona.”

“Ah, Seonhwa Noona?”

Bong Seonhwa Sunbae was a direct senior from the Department of Economics who graduated and got a job this year.

She was such a cool-headed person that I often saw her going to capsule rooms with juniors and peers, and it seemed all of those trips were to play Zelpia.

“If I send an invitation, it’ll just get buried under the others, right? You search for it.”

“What’s the guild name?”

“‘Proud Daughters of Korea’.”

“……Aren’t we a bit old to be boasting about our school like that?”

“Take it up with Seonhwa Noona.”

Fine. I’ll just assume ‘Korea’ refers to the Republic of Korea.

Of course, I’m a son, not a daughter, but…

I joined the guild while lost in meaningless thoughts.

Once the flood of guild invitation notifications vanished, the screen became much clearer. Seongjin patted my shoulder.

“If you go into settings, there’s an option to turn off invitation notifications. At least turn that off.”

“You’re doing this because you’re afraid I’ll never log in again, aren’t you?”

“I’m glad you noticed.”

“Ah, right. I even brought fireworks to celebrate you clearing the tutorial, Eonha!”

Are these guys friends or enemies?

While I adjusted my settings, pondering my human relationships once again, Han Kyutae excitedly set off a red firework.

With a loud pop, colorful confetti scattered over my head.

It was chaotic, but it was fun nonetheless.

<I thought the newbie zone was going to explode today LOL> Some guy cleared the Nightmare tutorial, so everyone went there to see. It was the first time I’d seen such a spectacle since people went to watch Sephiroth clear the Winter Forest on Hell difficulty solo. LMAO.

[Comments] It was even worse than back then. Only max-level players can go see Winter Forest, but anyone can go to the newbie zone. LOL. └ Random 1 └ Random 2 └ Random 3 └ You idiots, stop the comment train, it’s not funny.

Is this a prank being played on everyone but me? How do you even clear the Nightmare tutorial? └ But it actually happened.

<[Zelpia] Are there any old-timers here who’ve been playing since 3 years ago? I have something to ask.> Views: 342 | Comments: 12

I’m a ‘Zel-fetus’ who played a bit right after Zelpia launched and recently returned. Right after launch, there were occasionally people who cleared the Nightmare tutorial, right? [Of course, not many.] Among those who cleared Nightmare back then… who was it? Anyway, didn’t someone talk about the 5th floor on a stream? I can’t find them, maybe they quit streaming TT.

[Comments]

  1. Huh? There’s a 5th floor in the tutorial?
  2. I remember this too, but I thought my memory was wrong TT.
  3. 1 They say Nightmare difficulty has a 5th floor~ I’m an old-timer and I remember this. It was probably ‘RanChal’? That person. They said the 5th-floor boss is an AI created based on the last person who cleared Nightmare difficulty. Hehe.
  4. 3 Whoa, RanChal, it’s been a while TT. I liked RanChal, do you know why they stopped streaming?
  5. 4 They had a character-deletion bet with Sephiroth and lost TT. I believe they haven’t streamed since then.
  6. Wasn’t Sephiroth the last one to clear Nightmare 3 years ago? Then was a Sephiroth AI the boss?
  7. 5 >6 Sephiroth is the root of all evil…
  8. 3 Is this for sure??
  9. 8 Yeah, I remember because I gathered info like crazy back then because I wanted to clear Nightmare. Hehe.
  10. 7 Agreed.
  11. 7 Same here.
  12. Whoa, I didn’t know that. I learned something new.

Of course, that didn’t mean my gaming life suddenly became happy.

[General] Horollo2: Whoa, Blueberry is here. [General] Let’sPlayWellMingyu: You’re a hacker, right? You’re a hacker, right? You’re a hacker, right? [General] Let’sPlayWellMingyu: You’re a hacker, right? You’re a hacker, right? You’re a hacker, right? [General] surprices: LOL, it’s like the Pied Piper. [General] Let’sPlayWellMingyu: You’re a hacker, right? You’re a hacker, right? You’re a hacker, right? [General] LightOfTheWorld: Mingyu, stop spamming.

“Wow, f*ck…. How am I supposed to get quests?”

As soon as I stepped out of Han Kyutae’s pink-pink room, the crowd attacked me again.

It was a relief that the voice support turned off when the general chat became active beyond a certain point.

If it hadn’t, my ears would have literally exploded.

I could see yellow exclamation marks on the map.

It was my first time playing a VR game, but I’d played online games a few times when I was younger.

I knew I had to go over there to get quests.

The problem was how to push through this massive crowd of people.

“Excuse me, please make a path……”

[General] LightOfTheWorld: I told you not to spam, you f*cking brat. [General] okcash100: Stop fighting, please. [General] 939s: Newbie zone is a total mess. K. [General] guddmlrjtlrl: Didn’t Blueberry’s chat just go up? [General] DrugKing: Whoa, the streamers are here. LOL.

The crowd was so dense that the chat was scrolling at an insane speed.

It was a mess, with people spamming and fighting.

In this situation, even if I added a word, it would just become one of countless chats and vanish into the air.

Are they telling me to play the game or not?

[Friend] BlueberryWhiskey: I think I have to quit the game.

[Friend] JustOneHitOppa: Ah why why why why why.

[Friend] BlueberryWhiskey: No, I can’t even get to the quest givers.

Please stop blocking the path.

I wanted to shout that, but countless shouts were already overflowing.

When you use a Shout, bold red text passes across the top, but it was all useless talk.

—A broadcast by BJ So-and-so will begin shortly. (Self-promotion.) —Buying Mana Soul Orbs, whisper with offer. (This guy seemed to be playing the game normally.) —BlueberryWhiskey will rule Zelpia. (Not ruling, I’m about to quit.) —Please clear the way. (Ah, I relate to this one.)

[Friend] PoongPoongieLove: But it is pretty serious;;

[Friend] PoongPoongieLove: You can’t move because of the crowd…

[Friend] BlueberryWhiskey: That’s what I’m saying TT.

[Friend] PoongPoongieLove: Won’t the interest die down in about 3 days?

[Friend] PoongPoongieLove: Hmm….

[Friend] JustOneHitOppa: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Your big bro is coming soon.

[Friend] JustOneHitOppa: I’ll finish one main quest and run over. You trust me, right??? Hehe? Hehe? Heh?

And he calls himself a friend.

The game was fun, but I couldn’t progress in this situation.

I stood stupidly in the center of the village, unable to go anywhere, becoming a spectacle.

Letting the numerous chats flow past one eye, I opened my inventory window.

Since I had nothing else to do, I figured I should check the rewards I received earlier.

[Nightmare’s Beginner’s Gift Set]

You, who have left a massive footprint from your very first step, must certainly have been a great adventurer. Pluto, the God of Nightmares, was impressed by your achievement and stated he would willingly help you on your journey to regain your memories. A gift box from Pluto, made of the purest nightmares.

Behind the impressive-sounding description that ultimately explained nothing, I opened the box.

Inside the box were Pluto’s Sword, Pluto’s Leather Armor, and Pluto’s Necklace.

The design was much better than the rags I was currently wearing, but I didn’t reach for them immediately.

I tucked the rewards into my inventory and thought.
