Chapter 51: Irreversible Experimental Results

Hearing Merorin’s slightly complaining words, the Great Book’s pages fluttered faintly, its voice remaining calm and steady, without the slightest emotional fluctuation.

“I can point out the location of the Forbidden Section for you.”

“Huh? It’s that easy?”

Merorin’s eyes widened instantly, her face full of disbelief.

She had thought entering the Forbidden Section would require some complicated ritual or special key, never expecting it to be so simple.

The Great Book replied calmly, “As the Demon King’s wife, you have the right to enter the Forbidden Section.”

“The Demon King’s wife?”

Hearing those words, Merorin froze, blurting out instinctively, “Are you talking about me?”

“Yes.”

The Great Book’s tone remained flat, as if stating an established fact.

“Some time ago, the Demon King updated your identity registry and permissions.

Merorin is now the official spouse of the Demon King, Morgana, and enjoys access and reading rights within the core areas of the royal city.”

Hearing this, a storm surged through Merorin’s heart.

She leaned against the bookshelf, her fingertips trembling slightly.

“So… the Demon King already guessed that I would come to the library to look up information?

Or is she watching my every move right now from somewhere, coldly observing?”

In her mind appeared Morgana’s face, always wearing that playful smile.

“Or is it that… she isn’t afraid of me finding the truth at all?

That she has absolute confidence in me, and in her plan?”

The more Merorin thought about it, the more chilling it felt.

If everything was within the Demon King’s expectations, then was her resistance merely a permitted performance, staged for others to watch from the very beginning?

She shook her head, temporarily casting aside those suffocating thoughts.

“Forget it… there’s no point thinking about that right now.”

She took a deep breath, her gaze growing firm once more.

“What matters now is going to the Forbidden Section to check the records.

Whether what lies ahead is a trap or hope, I have to see it for myself.

I want to find what I’m looking for.”

“Mhm!”

Louise nodded vigorously, tightly gripping her master’s hand.

Guided by the Great Book, Merorin and Louise walked along a dark corridor at the deepest part of the library.

At last, a massive iron door carved with sealing runes appeared before them.

As Merorin approached, the runes on the door lit up one by one, emitting a low hum, and the iron door slowly opened inward.

Beyond the door lay a chaotic and oppressive space.

Books were piled in disorder, like ruins after being swept by a hurricane.

Some volumes had fallen apart into loose pages, barely bound together with rough hemp string.

Others were locked in iron chains, dark, dried stains still lingering on their covers.

Many more were sealed within crystal cases or metal boxes, plastered with crimson labels reading “Extremely Dangerous” and “Forbidden Knowledge.”

“This place… is really messy.”

Looking at this scene, like a graveyard of knowledge, Merorin couldn’t help but murmur softly.

Louise pressed close to her side, her eyes filled with worry.

“Master… it’s so chaotic and so scary here… can we really find what we want?”

Merorin turned to see Louise’s small face filled with unease.

She raised her hand and gently stroked her hair, showing a warm yet resolute smile.

“Don’t worry, Louise.

As long as we don’t give up, I believe we’ll succeed.”

“Mhm!”

Encouraged by her master’s smile, Louise nodded firmly, her voice becoming steady.

“I believe in you, Master!”

“Good.”

Merorin surveyed this wasteland of knowledge and began assigning tasks.

Lowering her voice, her expression serious, she said, “Louise, remember—we’re looking for information on rituals that turn humans into demons, or magic involving soul modification and memory alteration.

Any books related to consciousness reconstruction could be our target.”

“Understood, Master!”

Louise straightened her chest like a soldier about to march into battle and solemnly accepted the order.

Merorin and Louise split up and began searching through the chaotic piles of books in the Forbidden Section.

Merorin sifted through mountains of scrolls and tomes, her fingers brushing past volumes with terrifying titles—

“Design Schematics for a Super Magic Cannon Capable of Destroying Three Cities,”

“Ecology and Domestication of the Hundred-Headed Colossus,”

“Opening and Sealing Abyssal Plane Rifts”…

She hurried past this forbidden knowledge, any of which could spark a war, her sharp gaze focused on her true objective.

Suddenly, her fingers stopped on a thick volume with charred edges and yellowed pages.

Engraved on the spine were the words Records of Human–Demon Fusion Experiments.

Her heart skipped a beat.

She quickly pulled the book out and began flipping through it.

Just moments ago, the phrase “fusion experiments” seemed to stir something faint in her mind.

But now, thinking it over, it felt like only a tiny fragment of the Demon King’s vast experimental archives.

However, as page after page turned, the hope on her face was gradually replaced by icy despair.

The experimental report meticulously recorded countless failures and successes, and on the final page, the conclusion was marked in bold red letters.

“Once the fusion entity’s consciousness and form stabilize, the transformation process is irreversible.

Any attempt to remove demonic factors or restore the original form will result in soul collapse and physical disintegration.

Experimental subjects show a 100% mortality rate.

Recommendation: abandon reversal research and focus on developing the potential of the new form.”

“Irreversible… one hundred percent mortality…”

Merorin murmured the words, her fingers gripping the page tightly, her knuckles turning white.

Her entire body went cold, as if she had fallen into an abyss.

She finally understood.

The reason the Demon King allowed her to enter the Forbidden Section, even granting her the authority of a wife, was not negligence.

It was a cruel, lofty form of mercy.

She let Merorin seek the answer herself, so that she could personally touch despair.

She knew that once Merorin saw this report, her last shred of hope would be completely extinguished.

She would be forced to accept reality—that her resistance and her search were nothing more than a self-destructive tragedy, staged on a platform meticulously arranged by the Demon King.

At that moment, Louise ran over with a disappointed expression, tears of frustration glimmering in her eyes.

“Master… I couldn’t find what you were looking for… I’m sorry…”

Hearing her voice, Merorin snapped the despairing book shut.

She casually tossed it back into the pile, as if it were something filthy.

Looking at Louise’s self-blaming expression, a complex emotion surged in her heart.

She crouched down and gently stroked Louise’s hair, forcing out a smile.

“It’s alright, it’s alright.

If we didn’t find it, then we didn’t find it. Don’t be sad.”

She stood up and extended her hand toward Louise, her smile suddenly turning light and carefree.

“Let’s go.

I’m not going to look for that thing anymore.

Let’s do something else.”

“Huh? Something else?”

Louise blinked her big eyes, looking puzzled.

Then her small face flushed slightly, and with a hint of innocent expectation, she asked, “Master, what are we going to do?

Could it be… something happy?”

Seeing her pure and shy expression, the mischievous smile on Merorin’s face deepened.

She leaned close to Louise’s ear and whispered in a breathy voice.

“Of course it’s something exciting.”

“Yay!”

The word “exciting” instantly lit Louise up.

She jumped with excitement.

“Let’s hurry to Master’s room!

It’s soft and comfy there!”

Hearing this, Merorin burst out laughing and lightly tapped Louise on the head.

“What room?

We’re staying right here in the library.”

“In… in the library?”

Louise’s face instantly turned bright red, her voice as soft as a mosquito’s hum.

“Th-this… isn’t that a bit inappropriate?

What if someone sees us…”

“What’s inappropriate about it?”

Merorin held her hand and said casually.

“The library is so quiet, and no one comes here.

Isn’t this the perfect place for that kind of thing?”

Completely persuaded by her master’s words, Louise’s face was still red like an apple, but her eyes were now full of curiosity and excitement.

Holding hands with Merorin, she walked from the gloomy, chaotic Forbidden Section into the ordinary library area.

Merorin settled Louise onto a wide reading bench.

Louise sat perfectly straight, her hands nervously folded on her knees.

Her small body trembled slightly with anticipation, her imagination running wild over the “exciting thing” Merorin had mentioned.

Before long, Merorin took a book down from the shelf.

On the cover were the words Advanced Magical Theory.

She smiled and sat down beside Louise, opening the book and lightly patting the cover.

“Alright, Louise.

Didn’t I promise to teach you something?

Now, let’s begin.”
