Chapter 6: Puppy

The dim light scattered into thin strands.

Yu Zhu leaned half against the headboard.

His face, deathly pale, was streaked with blood.

His body shivered involuntarily under the omnipresent chill, those pitch-black pupils reflecting the figure before him.

Gu Wanting bent down where she stood, her fingertips gently wiping the line of blood from his lips.

Soft black hair slipped from behind her ear with the motion, brushing against her neck.

The rich fragrance of roses diffused through the basement, like an unseen fishing net cast quietly in all directions.

The light in Yu Zhu’s eyes was like a fish.

It darted frantically within the tightening mesh, thrashing about in search of escape, until at last it was battered and bruised—forced to watch itself hauled out of the water, compelled to abandon every futile fantasy.

Studies.

Family.

Dreams.

Even a life that ought to have bloomed bright with promise.

Everything he had was destroyed in that evening, all because of one unintentional glance from her.

Like a sudden, devastating downpour tearing through his life.

A flood surged, carrying away sand and silt, sweeping off both the remnants of the past and visions of the future, leaving him to struggle alone in the ruins—waiting endlessly for a clear sky that would never come.

“Uh…”

In the darkness of the basement, a hoarse sound broke out.

The voice was broken, with unnatural pauses, stiff shifts in tone—rasping and raw, like a machine mimicking human speech.

“Uh…”

The finger resting beneath Yu Zhu’s chin stilled.

Gu Wanting drew back her bloodstained hand, patiently licking each trace of crimson from between her fingers.

The metallic tang filled her mouth.

After swallowing the blood, she opened her palm and brushed away the tangled strands of hair that obscured the boy’s eyes.

Without the fringe shielding him, he suddenly met Gu Wanting’s gaze.

His heart skipped a beat.

His limbs trembled and went weak.

The chill pierced past skin and flesh into his very bones, stabbing like countless needles.

“Heh.”

Gu Wanting looked into those bottomless black eyes.

Noticing his reaction, she sneered softly.

“Your body is always this honest. Zhu Zhu, are you still afraid of me?”

A dog, locked away in the basement.

Whatever scraps of dignity and pride remained had long been trampled into dust, leaving only something small and lowly, forced to crawl at her feet.

It was only in pain or in fear that he overcame his terror of her—timidly, cautiously, calling her “Master.”

Palm turned downward, Gu Wanting did not press further.

Instead she caressed the swollen imprint of her hand on his cheek, and in a gentle voice asked:

“Zhu Zhu, does it hurt?”

“Careless again, I hurt this face of yours. Swollen like this—it must hurt, right? If Yueyue knew, she’d scold me for not cherishing something so precious.”

The false mask curved into an apologetic smile.

Lowering her voice, Gu Wanting tucked the loose strands of hair behind her ear.

“Zhu Zhu, your master didn’t mean to. I’ll be more careful next time, alright?”

Orchid-like breath spilled from her lips, but her hand was merciless, pinching the flesh of his cheek.

Blood pooled under the surface, a purple bruise blooming atop the scarlet slap mark.

The patchwork of wounds was pitiful to behold.

“But Zhu Zhu, how could a dog raised by its master ever fear its master?”

Gu Wanting let go.

The searing pain spread with the rush of blood.

Yu Zhu gave no sign of noticing.

In the darkness, his head lowered slightly, inching closer to her.

His breath rasped hoarsely.

Blood welled between his palms, yet still he leaned toward her bit by bit.

For a moment, he thought he had sunk into a fathomless sea.

It was always like this.

Like a speck of dust trapped in endless night, with nothing but boundless darkness.

“Zhu Zhu, I’m not Ming Yue. I don’t have that bleeding-heart kindness.”

“If you behave, then you won’t hurt…”

“I’ve taught you so many times to remember who your master is, but you always forget.”

“Why is that?”

His body drifted as though submerged in a tide.

The rise and fall was dizzying, breath stilled, until someone pried his lips open by force.

Dust trembled in the air.

Light warped.

Gu Wanting gripped his jaw, dragging him from the nightmare.

“Even now, what are you thinking about?”

“Zhu Zhu, why are you always so afraid of me?”

“Not even able to fake obedience well enough. The moment you draw close, you tremble all over.”

“And yet back then, you were so well-behaved. Obedient like a doll.”

“Why is it that, as time goes on, you only grow more disobedient?”

Yu Zhu said nothing.

The urge to torment him swelled all the stronger within Gu Wanting.

Like wild grass after the rain, it spread uncontrollably, devouring reason, decorum, poise—everything.

In the unknown depths of the basement, the girl in the black dress stood before him.

That face, coldly beautiful, wore a faint smile far too mature for her age.

Red lips parted slightly.

With the posture of a judge, she pressed close to Yu Zhu’s cheek.

“Then I’ll just have to teach you more.”
