Chapter 6: The God of Spring Has Recovered

“I brought it back from the land of winter.”

Strictly speaking, Suha had only managed to obtain it near the entrance to the winter domain, but he deliberately left that part out and put on a show. It was fine anyway, since Myeong wouldn’t know the difference even if he told him.

Myeong’s eyes sparkled as he stared at the snow Suha had brought. Even without touching it, the cold emanating from it made his fingertips feel as though they were freezing.

“That’s amazing! You actually set foot in the land of winter? Wow!”

Even the stronger immortals did not venture into the kingdom of winter. Not only was it the domain of the winter wolf, but the land was frozen solid with cold, which was poisonous to those born from flowers. Myeong clapped enthusiastically and showered Suha with praise.

‘As expected, someone born from such a magnificent peony really is different.’

Suha’s shoulders naturally rose at Myeong’s praise.

“It might melt, so don’t touch it, and don’t open it. And absolutely do not tell or show anyone else!”

“Okay, I won’t. I promise. Thank you for showing me.”

Suha carefully wrapped the bundle again so that not even a small breeze could get inside, then looked around Myeong’s storage room before placing it inside a chest in the corner.

“Um… but, Suha, you went to the land of winter.”

“Huh? Uh, yeah, I did.”

“Then did you see the ice flower, too?”

The treasure cherished by the God of Winter. Myeong was deeply fascinated by the ice flower. Whenever he was alone, he often imagined bringing back the legendary flower and offering it to the God of Spring.

‘How could I have not known about something as amazing as you?’

All the immortals and flower children would see Myeong differently. They would praise him for being amazing and apologize for how they had treated him all this time. Perhaps the God of Spring might even keep him by his side.

“I-I did!”

Unable to withstand Myeong’s expectant gaze, Suha ended up lying.

“Really? You saw it? Where? What did it look like? I heard the scary winter wolf guards it. Is that true?”

“Uh… Well, you see…”

Myeong moved closer to urge Suha on, then clasped his hands together in front of his chest.

“So, first, I went to the mountain at the entrance to winter.”

“Yeah. And then?”

“The mountain was enormous. It was huge. There were even blizzards, and I could hear beasts howling.”

“Uh-huh. Uh-huh.”

Suha made up the story on the spot while watching Myeong’s expression. Everything was covered in white snow, and it was so cold he thought he might freeze to death.

It was scary, too, but the winter wolf wasn’t in the kingdom of winter at the time, so it wasn’t quite that frightening.

He climbed the mountain and encountered a bear, but when he shouted loudly to scare it away, it ran off. The snow was piled up all the way to his neck. At the summit stood a palace made of ice, and in front of it was a lake as vast as the sea.

“I originally planned to bring back a snowman, so I only collected some snow. But then I saw something sparkling beneath the lake.”

“It was the ice flower!”

“Yeah. There was something like an ice flower beneath the lake.”

Later, Myeong might tell others that the ice flower was beneath the winter lake, so Suha deliberately kept his wording vague, saying ‘something like an ice flower.’

“I heard that anyone who visits the land of winter freezes solid from head to toe. Are you all right?”

Myeong looked at Suha’s sturdy wrist as he continued. He had been so curious that he had asked question after question, and he felt sorry that he had only now thought to ask whether Suha was all right.

“Huh? Oh, yeah. I froze too, but once I came back, I thawed out pretty quickly.”

Every word was a lie, but Suha answered shamelessly without giving anything away. Myeong would never be able to go to the kingdom of winter anyway.

He was small and frail, so he would probably spend his entire life doing odd jobs in the land of spring before eventually disappearing. So it was perfectly fine to exaggerate this much.

“That’s a relief.”

“I’m going now. Take good care of this, all right? I mean, guard it as though your life depends on it.”

“Okay, okay!”

Since Suha kept emphasizing it until the very end, Myeong nodded vigorously and promised to protect it.

“I’m jealous.”

Once Suha disappeared beyond the wall, Myeong unconsciously let the words escape with a sigh.

In the empty storage room, weak little Myeong ironed another servant’s silk clothes for the God of Spring, while strong Suha had gone to the harsh land of winter to bring back a snowman for the same god.

“It’s okay. Someday, I’ll be able to do it too. I will…”

Sniffling, Myeong pulled himself together and resumed ironing. Someday, he would be able to travel to the harsh land of winter for the God of Spring just like Suha. He was sure of it. Absolutely sure.

It was a busy day from early morning. As the day of the full moon drew closer, the energy of spring grew stronger. With only a few days left until the festival, the entire land of spring was filled with the energy of the season.

Myeong’s heart fluttered at the scent of spring he could sense. It almost felt as though the God of Spring himself were staying nearby. Myeong firmly suppressed his pounding heart and picked up a dry cloth.

As he sat on the floor of the shrine folding clothes, he spotted flower children hurrying about outside the courtyard. With their evening rehearsal approaching, the flower children were dressed in beautiful silk of various colors and wore pretty hats.

Myeong watched them enviously with his mouth slightly agape.

The flower children gathered in groups of three or four in front of the courtyard, each carrying a small cloth pouch in their hands as they chatted. Pretending not to be interested, Myeong fiddled with the dry cloth and began secretly listening to their conversation.

“I heard there are lots of scary humans down there. Do you think we’ll be okay?”

“What can humans even do to us? We’ll be fine.”

“I want to buy some delicious sweets!”

“Let’s go and come back quickly.”

Ahead of the festival, the flower children had been given permission to visit the Human Realm for fun. It was also a reward for all the hard work they had done.

Hee-seo, a flower child in charge of the second garden in the northeast, fiddled with his pouch as he glanced at Myeong sitting on the floor. He knew that the pouch was originally meant for Myeong, who always did his work for him.

Even though Myeong was ignored throughout the land of spring, even though he had never been given a name and there were doubts about whether he was even a servant of spring… Hee-seo took a deep breath and, gathering his courage, approached Myeong.

“Hey.”

“Huh? Me?”

“Is there anything you want? I’ll buy it for you.”

“Hee-seo! What are you doing?”

When Hee-seo spoke to Myeong, the other flower children were startled and tried to stop him. Myeong was startled as well, his eyes widening.

“Why are you…”

“Ah, just because! Tell me quickly. Otherwise, I’m leaving.”

“Uh, uh… Then, just one sweet…”

‘Delicious sweets.’

Myeong remembered the sweets they had called delicious earlier and asked Hee-seo to buy him one. Hee-seo nodded and quickly walked out of the shrine. Myeong remained there in a daze for a moment before breaking into a bright smile.

Perhaps, just perhaps, he might have something to offer the God of Spring after all.

As the sunset passed over into the land of the spirits, Myeong finished his assigned work early and was tidying up the inside of his storage room. When he heard the sound of a pipa in the distance, Myeong left the door wide open.

He planned to go near the palace that evening. Myeong put on the cleanest white clothes he owned and gently smoothed down his unruly hair. Just in case, he also brought along a flower crown he had woven from wildflowers whenever he had found the time.

He was slowly getting himself ready when a loud voice came from outside.

“The God of Spring has finally recovered!”

Myeong stepped outside the storage room and watched the immortals and flower children gathered along the main road. Cheers and cries of joy erupted alongside the loud announcement.

“Finally!”

They hugged one another, blessing and celebrating the God of Spring, and Myeong smiled and clapped along with them. He did not know what had happened, but he was simply happy that the God of Spring had regained his strength.

“Myeong, here.”

Suddenly, a hand tugged at his clothes from behind, and Myeong turned around. Hee-seo, who had already returned from the Human Realm, was holding out a pouch to him.

“They said the God of Spring has recovered!”

“I know! I heard it too!”

When Myeong told him the news he had just heard, Hee-seo looked equally delighted.
