The old man’s furious shout rang out from the rain clouds, loud enough to drown out the thunder.
Purple sandalwood Buddhist beads passed through lightning, then suddenly broke apart in midair. The scattered beads each became the size of a car and crashed down in a ring, surrounding the girl, the Tiger Demon, and the Wolf Demon.
Golden Buddhist seals spilled from every bead and formed a formation.
The white-haired old man stood in the air. The hem of his Tang suit fluttered in the rain. He looked every bit the immortal sage, except for the murderous rage twisting his face.
The girl watched the old man look as if he wanted to swallow her alive, and she could not help but press a hand to her forehead.
She kicked Zhu Ning, who was slumped on the ground. “So I beat the young one, and now the old one shows up. When will this plot point ever stop?”
At this point, not only were all the bones in this guy’s body broken, but his pitiful fighting spirit, jealousy, and arrogance had been crushed along with them.
The old man nearly choked with fury at the girl’s behavior.
He was Zhu Ning’s master, a veteran of the Lin’an Demon Suppression Bureau, Elder Qin.
“Beast, will you not surrender?”
Elder Qin’s hands flew through seals. The golden light of the Buddhist beads linked together and traced a huge 卍 symbol on the ground. In an instant, the golden light blazed.
“Is this old man a Buddhist?” The girl had no mood to trade barbs with this nasty old man. She did not understand the various factions among demons and demon exterminators, but from the 卍 symbol alone, she could tell he was probably using Buddhist techniques.
She flicked out a tiny ice spike. The spike, capable of piercing the outer armor of an armored vehicle, vaporized into a wisp of steam the moment it touched the golden light.
This formation looked far stronger than the spirit-trapping formation Zhou Xuan had spread over all of Lin’an University last time. It even had lethal power.
“No, he just uses Buddhist techniques.” Tiger Demon crossed his arms, his nails tapping a rhythm on his bulging muscles. “At the beginning of the last century, the world fell into chaos. Some demon exterminators with foresight formed the Demon Subduing Society. Heirs of many sects answered the call and joined.”
He snapped his fingers. Purple lightning flashed and knocked aside an incoming 卍 symbol.
“The Demon Subduing Society’s purpose was to stand together against evil demons. Members shared most of their inheritances with one another. Buddhist techniques were one of the most widely spread.”
“This old man was probably a member once. He likely learned plenty of other schools’ methods there. He counts as an old veteran.”
“I know this old man.” Wolf Demon suddenly cut in. “Qin Zhenghe. An old bone of the Lin’an Demon Suppression Bureau. When Boss first rebuilt the demon market, he caused no small amount of trouble.”
“Enough talk. Can we kill him?” The girl curled her lip. Frost spread from her toes and climbed up the curtain of rain, freezing it into a dome. “I find him disgusting.”
The ice dome blocked the Buddhist light outside. Steam rose constantly, but the powerful demonic energy in the steam kept the Buddhist light from advancing.
For some reason, the girl felt sick whenever she saw 卍 symbols or Buddhist light. She had a feeling that in a past life, she might have been disgusted by some dead bald donkey, and badly at that.
Wolf Demon looked at Tiger Demon, and Tiger Demon looked back at Wolf Demon. Both suddenly felt their Young Miss was becoming more and more like Boss, especially her domineering ways. She was practically carved from the same mold.
Just a dozen hours ago, she had been like a fresh, pretty young girl. Now she was all about executions and killing at the drop of a hat, acting like a mafia princess…
Was this the power of teaching by example? Or were girls just naturally changeable?
“Uh… Young Miss, with just the three of us… it’s a little difficult.” Tiger Demon scratched his face awkwardly. He had not expected his Young Miss to start calling for someone’s death the moment she arrived.
Anyone else would be fine, but this man was Qin Zhenghe…
There was not much to say about old Qin Zhenghe. As a veteran demon exterminator, he disliked and looked down on advanced modern combat methods. Compared with guns, cannons, and over-the-horizon strikes, an antique his age trusted his own skills more. The key was that he had the capital to back it up.
He really could fight.
Techniques and spiritual power, unless one was a heaven-sent genius, had to be accumulated over time. Demon exterminators who practiced techniques and controlled spiritual power would face a tribulation after a hundred years. Those who failed died and their dao dissipated. Those who survived achieved unity of heaven and man.
For an antique like him who had survived his tribulation, the strength and experience accumulated over a century could not be described as merely terrifying.
Otherwise, how could a mere Demon Suppression Envoy have forced Ye Zi to try every method to build her own team to oppose him? In the Demon Suppression Bureau, even someone like Cheng Yu, a Demon Suppression Supervisor, would give him some face.
With the current strength of Tiger Demon, Wolf Demon, and the girl, avoiding defeat under him might be easy, but defeating or killing him was almost a fantasy.
“Can’t beat him?” The girl’s tone, faintly disappointed, stabbed into the Tiger and Wolf Demons’ hearts like a knife.
‘Why are you all so useless!’
‘Sorry, Young Miss. Your subordinate truly is incompetent…’
Tiger Demon clutched his chest and thought, ‘I should call Sister Qi over sooner.’
The ice dome was slowly shrinking under the Buddhist light. At this rate, the fight was probably unavoidable.
‘I really don’t want to fight an old bastard like this…’
“Whoosh!”
A moon-white glow suddenly streaked across the horizon. It pierced the rain clouds at a speed ordinary people could not follow, and drove straight into the center of the huge 卍 symbol on the ground. The moon-white glow seeped into the Buddhist light and dimmed the blazing gold considerably!
Only when the moon-white glow had fully buried itself in the ground did the girl see what it was: a broken piece of an ancient bronze sword. The blade still trembled slightly from its high-speed flight, giving off a faint hum like a dragon’s cry.
The next second, a hand suddenly closed around the hilt.
‘It’s that guy…’
Xu Zhi had appeared beside the broken sword without anyone noticing. His eyes were shut, as if he were drawn to the blade by instinct.
He was still unconscious, yet he casually swung the sword. The moon-white glow severed the golden veins of the 卍 symbol completely.
In the surging glow, the girl suddenly laughed softly. The killing aura around Xu Zhi had already gone inert. Without that violent air, he actually looked like a sword immortal.
Appearing so suddenly and cutting down the crisis with one sword, he had sort of fulfilled his childhood dream of being a hero. Though he probably would not remember that he had ever looked this cool.
As for the sword, the girl had never seen it before. But she knew its owner was Feng Yi. The faint sword intent wrapped around the blade had not yet dispersed, and that sword intent belonged to Feng Yi.
“Thank you…”
The girl was no sword master. She could not decipher the message hidden in the faint sword intent, but she still seemed to hear those words in the humming intent around the blade.
‘A man about to die, and he still had the leisure to worry about others?’
But it also meant that, at the very end, Feng Yi had met his long sleep as a human.
The broken sword had probably flown here following Xu Zhi’s aura, and unexpectedly it had helped the girl.
Since that was the case, it was better to leave early. The girl had no intention of risking her life just to kill this old man. That would be too reckless.
Besides, Xu Zhi was still here. She did not want her recklessness to hurt this fool who had just clawed his way back from the edge of death.
“Old thing!” The girl suddenly raised her head. Her slit pupils had melted into a molten gold. She grinned at Elder Qin with a sweet smile that was pure mockery. “Remember to discipline your disciple!”
“Crack!”
The girl flicked her fingers. The snap pierced the golden light, and extreme cold suddenly exploded high above. Like an invisible hand, it seized the entire ruins. Frost climbed the dense clouds and spread downward, wrapping around the Buddhist beads like weeping willow branches.
A sudden gale swept up with purple lightning and countless ice crystals. The white breath of the Demon Suppression officers froze into ice shards in midair. Frost climbed onto the red-dot sights of their rifles and shattered the glass in a blink.
The instantaneous extreme cold nearly froze time itself!
The ice dome gave a sharp crack like breaking porcelain. Web-like cracks spread for dozens of meters.
“Krak!”
Amid the sharp crack of breaking ice, time suddenly resumed. The ice dome collapsed with a roar, kicking up a storm of snow that hid the entire ruins.
When the snow and wind stopped, warm sunlight suddenly fell on Elder Qin’s face. The sky, dark with clouds just moments ago, had cleared in the few seconds the blizzard raged. Ice crystals floating in the air refracted the evening glow.
The sky took on an amber hue. The snake demon had actually dispersed the dark clouds covering all of Lin’an!
And the three demons were now gone without a trace.
