Chapter 23: A Glimmer of Hope

“You… are you here to kill me too?”

The world was one where no one existed, a world where no one was needed. Her very existence felt like a stain upon it, utterly useless. The young Calamity Witch, Feng Ling, had seen through this world far too early.

No matter where she went, she could find no place to rest. She was relentlessly pursued by people, her life constantly threatened.

The reason was simple: she brought death, and so, people ostracized her.

In the end, this poor girl had nowhere to belong, nowhere to call home.

She constantly hid in remote, sparsely populated areas, much like a homeless stray dog.

Despite this harsh reality, Feng Ling had not given up. Hope still flickered within her, as did a dream.

She eagerly awaited her eighteenth birthday, for once she came of age, she could enter the magic academy.

From what people said, it sounded like a true utopia. Kind classmates, gentle teachers, and powerful teammates—to Feng Ling, it was paradise itself.

Feng Ling believed this implicitly, quietly resolving in her heart: ‘I will enter the magic academy.’

‘Once I get in there, everything will get better. Everyone there is very strong; they won’t be harmed by my constitution. If I get in, I’ll make friends and finally sleep peacefully.’

The small girl clenched her fists, clinging to this belief. As a useless stain, she evaded the world’s attempts to cleanse her.

But… fate always seemed to play cruel jokes. In the end, she couldn’t escape the people’s hunt. The person before her was a mage, fundamentally different from the villagers she’d encountered before. Feng Ling knew… she could no longer run.

“You… are you here to kill me too?”

Feng Ling stood up, her eyes appearing hollow and devoid of feeling, yet even more so, filled with despair.

Upon seeing this, Mo Ya frowned, but still walked into the tree hollow.

However, Feng Ling slowly retreated a few steps, ensuring the distance between them did not lessen in the slightest.

“Don’t come closer. You’ll die. You must be a mage, right? Then… just finish me here.”

Despair consumed the girl’s heart, and darkness spread throughout her entire being. This time, there truly was nowhere left to run.

So, she closed her eyes, awaiting her death.

‘My death… perhaps it’s a form of atonement. After all, I am a witch.’

“Who said I was going to kill you?”

The girl did not feel the expected numbness in her brain; instead, she heard the man’s voice from before her.

The voice itself was cold and emotionless, yet Feng Ling opened her eyes in surprise.

To her, this was utterly unexpected, an impossible answer.

‘Why? Why does this world reject me? Why does everyone want me to disappear? Why…’

“What are you talking about?! I’m a witch! I’m a witch who sacrifices others for her own survival!”

“Then… why did you warn me to keep my distance? If I were to touch you, it would be me who dies, not you.”

Mo Ya walked over to Feng Ling and sat on a nearby stone, his eyes holding a subtle expression.

He knew the emotions that burdened this girl: guilt, a profound guilt for her very existence in this world.

Mo Ya saw a reflection of himself in her. In his past, chasing power had cost him too much and burdened him with too many regrets—one of which was the guilt of personally killing his comrades.

Mo Ya and the girl’s eyes met once more.

“Why… why won’t you kill me? This should be the entire village’s wish, right?”

“Indeed, but… it’s not my wish.”

This unexpected answer quietly carved a small opening in the girl’s dark heart.

She wavered. To her, this was utterly incomprehensible.

“This is your sin, so… you must live to atone for it, to prevent committing further sins.” Mo Ya rose from the stone and stood tall before Feng Ling, placing his hand on the girl’s head.

Mo Ya knew the consequences of this action. A curse would cling to him, a plague would infect him, and he would die like any ordinary person. Yet, he showed not a trace of hesitation.

“If this is a curse, I will end it. Then, you will smile and live on, oblivious to it all.”

Through the opening in the girl’s heart, a sliver of light seemed to shine in.

Her eyes changed, and a mist seemed to gather in them.

“You… idiot. If you die, it’s not my problem.”

Mo Ya noticed this, but simply turned his head and exited the tree hollow, leaving Feng Ling alone.

The black robe fluttered through the forest—that was the last sight the girl saw.

“Live well. I will return.”

Mo Ya waved his empty right hand and vanished from the girl’s sight.

‘Calamity Witch, is she truly a Calamity Witch?’ Mo Ya pondered.

For, upon contact, he had clearly felt the corrosive power churning within the girl’s body.

If he wasn’t careful, that might be the true source of the plague.

After confirming he wouldn’t be discovered by the girl, Mo Ya stopped.

“You’re there, aren’t you? Help me investigate something.”

There was no one beside Mo Ya, yet he spoke these words.

And a miracle occurred. Behind him… he suddenly felt a soft touch. A strand of blood-red hair floated into Mo Ya’s vision.

“Ah, you found me after all, my most formidable King~”
