Chapter 134: The Price of Loyalty

A long, piercing whistle shrieked as the magic-powered train, billowing steam, sped into view from the horizon.

Standing on the platform, Nomnom clutched the train ticket tightly in her hand.

Once aboard this train, she could escape this nightmarish place and embark on a new life.

Yet, for some inexplicable reason, Luluti’s words before her departure echoed persistently in her mind.

[I never saw you as merely my maid.]

Though Luluti had not elaborated, her meaning was unmistakably clear.

To the lonely young lady, Nomnom was never just an obedient maid. She had always been a trusted friend, a constant companion by her side.

And wasn’t it the same for Nomnom?

Initially, she had infiltrated the family to carry out Raymond’s orders, meticulously monitoring the young lady’s every move.

However, after so many years of living side-by-side, Nomnom had gradually found herself unable to distinguish whether she was still pretending or truly regarded Luluti as a vital, cherished presence, akin to family.

But even so, what could she do?

Nomnom lowered her gaze, staring at her own shadow, and let out a self-deprecating laugh.

Once the academy festival concluded and Krokor departed Ailanmia, Raymond would undoubtedly bare his fangs once more.

With a cursed seal etched upon her heart, she was bound to his every command, utterly incapable of resistance.

This time, Luluti, left utterly alone, would likely not be so fortunate.

The train slowly glided to a halt before her. Amidst the grinding of mechanical gears, the air valves hissed open, expelling vast plumes of white smoke from the pipes.

Nomnom gazed at the warm, orange glow of the carriage lights, gritting her teeth. A flicker of resolute determination flashed in her eyes.

Deep into the night.

A phantom-like shadow streaked across the dark, cloaked expanse of Ailanmia.

Under the faint moonlight, Nomnom, draped in a cloak, deftly navigated the intricate, labyrinthine alleyways.

She mused that she must have lost her mind.

She had finally secured a chance at freedom, yet like a fool, she had foregone boarding the train, returning instead to this nauseating city.

But, truly… she simply could not abandon the young lady.

Her days as a maid in the villa had been steeped in despair.

The innocent young lady trusted Raymond implicitly, never once doubting a single word he uttered.

As for Nomnom, she was under Raymond’s constant surveillance. There was never an opportune moment to expose him or report to the family.

The only thing she could do was ensure Luluti’s death would be less painful when Raymond eventually made his move.

However, circumstances had now changed.

This time, the situation was no longer solely controlled by Raymond.

The faction from the royal capital, led by Krokor, was entirely outside Raymond’s jurisdiction. At least until the academy festival concluded, they represented a powerful backing.

And…

The image of the black-haired young man surfaced in Nomnom’s mind.

That tutor, who seemed to have nothing but money on his mind, had somehow blocked her otherwise certain attack that night.

Though she didn’t know what methods he had employed, Nomnom’s intuition affirmed that he was definitely concealing his true strength.

That was why, that very night, she had uttered those words to Yalin: ‘Please, I beg you.’

Despite Yalin not having returned to the villa since that day, Nomnom still clung to a sliver of hope for him.

Thus, when questioned by Raymond, she had deliberately evaded mentioning the abilities Yalin displayed that night, hoping this unexpected trump card might prove unexpectedly useful.

Yes, she had already made up her mind, hadn’t she?

Since Raymond had decided to eliminate Luluti, he would soon make another move.

At that point, Krokor and his faction would discover the secret that Raymond had been keeping from the kingdom.

Once Krokor and his people returned to the royal capital, everything would be lost.

Before the academy festival, it was her only chance to save Luluti.

She had to find a way to deliver the information into Krokor’s hands. As it stood, he was the only one capable of standing against Raymond.

Nomnom’s mind raced, strategizing her next move.

Just then, a frigid voice resonated from behind her, without warning.

“You are still as foolish as you always were.”

The instant she heard those words, Nomnom’s pupils contracted. Boundless terror surged from the depths of her heart, utterly consuming her.

Raymond? Why was he here?!

It wasn’t that Nomnom hadn’t considered her actions might be detected.

Precisely for this reason, she had chosen to depart only when the train was on the verge of departure. She had even taken the immense risk of returning tonight, like a killer doubling back.

She was gambling!

Gambling that Raymond would assume she, having gained her freedom, would never dare to return to her death. She aimed to exploit this precious window of time to transmit the information.

She hadn’t anticipated that her small scheme would be so easily seen through by him.

The next moment, a searing pain, as if her soul were being torn apart, ripped through her heart. Nomnom let out a wretched howl, instantly collapsing to her knees in agony.

It hurt so much…

This pain was dozens of times more intense than the one she had endured in the basement.

“What a noisy stray cat, utterly devoid of proper etiquette,” Raymond sneered, channeling his magic. Nomnom felt as though her throat was bound by chains, unable to produce a single sound.

But even without sound, the pain would not diminish. It was like her heart was being crushed by rusted iron hands—a pain beyond description.

Nomnom trembled, curling on the ground, frantically clawing at the loose stones beneath her. Her palms became a bloody mess, yet she didn’t stop.

“Hee hee hee, I told you she’d come back, didn’t I?”

A silvery, bell-like laugh rang out as Carol, cloaked in black robes, emerged from the shadows.

“Ah, such profound love, Miss Maid. I understand you, you know? To protect the one you love most, even at the cost of your own life…”

She winked, looking at Raymond.

“So, Mr. Raymond, stop tormenting her.”

Raymond glanced at the young girl beside him, saying nothing, merely withdrawing his control over the cursed seal.

Carol knelt, gently stroking Nomnom’s pale face, and whispered,

“Miss Maid, you truly are brave.”

“But… it’s a pity. You have someone you love, and I have someone I love. To prevent you from hindering mine, I can only ask you to disappear.”

Nomnom, sprawled on the ground, still convulsed uncontrollably despite the pain having receded. She couldn’t utter a single word.

She struggled to lift her head, looking at Carol with a mix of shock and terror.

It was this black-robed girl who had used sinister mental magic to manipulate Fav.

By now, Nomnom had resigned herself to her impending death. However, falling into this girl’s hands would mean not only having her memories read but also being turned into a puppet, completely at her command, becoming a tool to eliminate the young lady.

That was a fate she absolutely could not accept.

Nomnom gritted her teeth, summoning every ounce of strength, and drew a gleaming dagger from her waist.

“Idiot!”

Raymond cursed, about to reactivate the cursed seal, but Nomnom was quicker this time. She plunged the dagger savagely into her own heart.
