Bai Mengqi slightly furrowed her brows.

She requested with a helpless expression, “Can’t we just stick to our own respective relationships?”

Zi Yanran rolled her eyes at her.

With her arms crossed, she spoke to the children in an undeniable tone, “No. It makes it sound like I’m ancient! Remember, you two can call her Aunt Mengqi in public, but in private, you must call her Mama Mengqi. Understand?”

‘Since Bai Mengqi and I already share such a unique relationship, the way we address her naturally needs a proper arrangement. We can’t just leave it ambiguous,’ she mused inwardly.

The two little ones had always been obedient to their mother.

Moreover, they didn’t reject Bai Mengqi in the slightest.

On the contrary, they seemed to genuinely like her from the bottom of their hearts.

Little Ziyi blinked her large, watery eyes.

Suddenly, she stretched out her hands towards Bai Mengqi and spoke in a sweet, childish voice, “Oh, Mama Mengqi, Ziyi wants a hug too! You’ve been holding Gege for quite a while now.”

Her tiny demeanor was beyond adorable.

She simply yearned to be held in Bai Mengqi’s arms.

Zixuan, standing nearby, was not pleased.

He also extended his small hands, forcefully nudging his sister’s, and pouted as he declared, “Go away, go away! No, I won’t let you!”

He still wanted to stay in Bai Mengqi’s embrace for a little longer.

He was reluctant to give up his spot to his sister so soon.

Bai Mengqi gazed at the two little ones.

She found their antics both amusing and a little exasperating.

In the end, she simply scooped up her daughter Ziyi as well.

She chuckled, “There, isn’t this better? Why be so particular?”

‘These two children are so adorable anyway,’ she thought.

‘A hug is just a hug; it’s no big deal.’

Bai Mengqi tacitly accepted Zi Yanran’s statement.

After all, given her current identity, becoming the children’s second mother was certainly plausible.

However, becoming a father was definitely out of the question; she was well aware of her own limitations in that regard.

In truth, while Bai Mengqi appeared conflicted, she was overjoyed deep down.

Previously, she had always believed she might live out her days in solitude.

Her life had been bleak and devoid of any real hope.

Yet, who could have imagined that she would suddenly gain such a pair of well-behaved and adorable children, along with a beautiful partner?

It truly felt like a blessing from the heavens.

However, having never experienced anything like this before, she and Zi Yanran would have to slowly navigate their relationship from scratch.

There’s an old saying about ‘love after marriage.’

Though this was only their second meeting, with the children acting as a bridge, matters of the heart were truly unpredictable.

Bai Mengqi also did not immediately develop feelings of romantic love for Zi Yanran.

Zi Yanran’s feelings towards Bai Mengqi were more akin to the familial affection one might feel for a child’s parent.

It was not the romantic love typically shared between a man and a woman.

Both knew they would need time to properly adapt to their unique relationship.

Time gently flowed onward.

Soon, it was past one o’clock in the afternoon.

Su Xiaoshi had been busy in the kitchen all this time.

She had meticulously prepared a table laden with delicious dishes.

Once everything was ready, she approached her daughter’s bedroom door.

Tapping gently, she said softly, “Yanran, lunch is served. Please bring our guest and the children to eat.”

A moment later, the door opened.

Zi Yanran emerged first, a faint smile gracing her lips, and replied, “Yes, alright. Let’s go eat.”

As she spoke, she turned back and called out to Bai Mengqi and the two children behind her.

Upon hearing that it was time to eat, the two little ones instantly grew ecstatic.

Their eyes lit up, and they darted out like playful sprites, yelling, “Time to eat!” as they ran.

Their joyful expressions resembled two lively little rabbits.

Bai Mengqi looked at Su Xiaoshi.

With a slight blush, she said, “Auntie, I apologize for the intrusion.”

‘She still felt a little apprehensive,’ she thought.

‘After all, this was her first time dining at Zi Yanran’s home, and the woman before her was none other than her mother-in-law.’

Su Xiaoshi, however, smiled warmly and replied, “No intrusion at all, none! This is the first time our precious daughter has brought a guest home for a meal. It seems she really likes you.”

Su Xiaoshi was actually quite pleased.

Her daughter bringing a friend home for a meal indicated a good relationship between them, and seeing Bai Mengqi, she found the young woman quite endearing.

Hearing Su Xiaoshi’s words, Bai Mengqi offered a shy smile.

A wave of warmth spread through her heart.

At that moment, Zi Yanran interjected, “Mom, don’t be too polite to her. She’ll be eating at our house often from now on. She’s my personal secretary; wherever I go, she has to follow.”

Zi Yanran had her own subtle intentions in saying this.

She simply wanted everyone in the family to know that her relationship with Bai Mengqi was extraordinary.

These words, however, made Su Xiaoshi unable to hold back.

Frowning, she chastised her daughter slightly, “Nonsense! This is just a job for her. How can you tie her to your side? When it’s time to get off work, she should go home. Does she have to follow you even to sleep?”

Su Xiaoshi felt her daughter’s words were truly excessive.

One couldn’t treat a young woman like that; work was work, and life was life, and they needed to be kept separate.

Hearing her mother’s words, Zi Yanran merely glanced at Bai Mengqi.

Then, a meaningful smile played on her lips as she slowly drawled, “It’s not impossible, you know. As long as she doesn’t mind, moving in with us would be perfectly fine.”

With that, she disregarded her mother’s stunned expression and headed straight downstairs.

Bai Mengqi offered an awkward laugh from the side.

‘Zi Yanran certainly has a way with words,’ she thought, but unable to say anything herself, she quickly followed.

However, when she arrived downstairs, she found Zi Ye staring at her with an astonished gaze.

Zi Ye was instantly stunned.

“This…”

His initial reaction was that Bai Mengqi bore an uncanny resemblance to his granddaughter.

She was practically a grown-up version of little Ziyi; her features and demeanor seemed carved from the exact same mold.

‘They’re too alike, aren’t they…’ Zi Ye muttered to himself.

He found it truly incredible.

How could there be such identical people in the world, unless…

At that moment, Zi Yanran casually approached.

She introduced her to her father, “Dad, let me introduce you. This is my new personal secretary, Bai Mengqi.”

She pretended not to notice her father’s astonished expression, introducing Bai Mengqi with perfect composure.

Bai Mengqi quickly stepped forward.

With a polite smile, she greeted him, “Hello, Uncle Zi. I am Bai Mengqi, General Manager Zi’s personal secretary, and I just started today.”

Zi Ye then nodded somewhat flustered.

He managed to force a smile, saying, “Oh, welcome to our home.”

Yet, his mind was still preoccupied with the uncanny resemblance between Bai Mengqi and his granddaughter.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss.

The family gathered around the dining table.

What should have been a lively scene filled with laughter now felt somewhat constrained.

Everyone felt a little uneasy.

They were unsure of what to say.

Observing the somewhat subdued atmosphere, Zi Ye felt compelled to break the silence.

He cleared his throat and spoke first, “The dishes look truly wonderful today, Xiaoshi. Your cooking skills are getting better and better.”

‘He thought starting with the food might help ease the tension.’

Su Xiaoshi chuckled at her husband’s words.

She replied, “Oh, it’s nothing. You all just enjoy my cooking, so I practice more.”

‘She also hoped this meal would be a joyous one,’ she thought.

‘It mustn’t be ruined by this slightly strange atmosphere.’

Zi Yanran echoed, “Mom, these dishes really are delicious. I can’t find anything this good outside.”

As she spoke, she served food to the two children.

She wanted them to eat plenty.

The two little ones, their mouths full, mumbled indistinctly, “Delicious, delicious!”

They paid no mind to the subtle tension among the adults; as long as there was good food, they were content.

Bai Mengqi watched the family from the side.

An indescribable feeling stirred within her.

She felt as though she had integrated into this family.

Yet, a slight distance still remained.

At that moment, Zi Ye glanced at Bai Mengqi once more.

He couldn’t help but ponder the striking resemblance between her and his granddaughter.

‘Could it merely be a coincidence?’ he wondered.

‘But this coincidence is far too precise.’

He decided he needed to find an opportunity to properly question Bai Mengqi.

He hoped to unravel this mystery.
