Ten minutes later, Yu Jun gave the order. He then stood in the middle, blocking any chance of peeking at the other’s answer.
Ji Wenyan’s calm composure improved Yu Jun’s impression of him even further.
Exchanging barbs with Xuan Yan had been useless and only gave him a headache. Settling it with math problems—now that was the proper scholar’s approach!
‘Let him show his true strength and leave her with nothing to say,’ Yu Jun thought happily.
He found Ji Wenyan more and more agreeable, and the fact that he was dating Bai Mengze only cemented his belief that they were the perfect couple.
He had completely forgotten that, when Ji Wenyan first entered the classroom, he’d been silently praying for no trouble.
Meanwhile, Xuan Yan stood before the right blackboard, carefully reading a problem far beyond high school math. Her brow furrowed. ‘Isn’t this overkill? A slacker like Ji Wenyan can’t even solve senior-year problems, let alone this. Why go so hard?’
But imagining Ji Wenyan scratching his head in frustration made her frown ease. ‘The contrast will highlight my brilliance. His family just has dirty money—he can rig things, but his grades are garbage compared to mine. He’s definitely losing.’
She saw this as revenge for her brother. Bai Mengze would be humiliated too, pointed at in school for helping him cheat. The thought was exhilarating.
“Teacher, I’m done.”
Just as Xuan Yan was gloating and writing the first character of “solution,” Ji Wenyan’s voice came from the left.
She snapped the chalk in her hand. ‘How long has it been? I just finished reading the problem, and he’s already done? Impossible! The teacher must have made it too hard. He gave up.’
‘Hmph, if you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. He brought this on himself.’
“Finished so quickly? Ji Wenyan, don’t you want to check your work?”
Without even looking at the problem, Yu Jun earnestly advised him to review. In his years of teaching, he had seen brilliant students stumble due to overconfidence, ending up with scores far below expectations.
“Why check? They’re all correct. Checking again would be a waste of time.”
Ji Wenyan looked at the balding math teacher, puzzled. With his perfect skill, what was there to check?
Yu Jun could say nothing more. He sighed inwardly, thinking Ji Wenyan was still too young, unlike the steady Bai Mengze. He made a mental note to drill caution into him during team training.
Turning his gaze to the blackboard, Yu Jun froze.
His eyes widened and his jaw nearly dropped as he took in the perfectly elegant solution. Never had he imagined such a concise method! Compared to their original answer, Ji Wenyan’s was simpler, faster, and crystal clear.
‘He’s really a gem!’
The other four teachers were equally stunned. Ji Wenyan’s proficiency far surpassed that of a high school student—he was more skillful than veteran teachers.
‘How could such a student ever need to cheat?’
On the other side, Xuan Yan had just written a formula—and it was wrong.
The difference was clear.
“Alright, Xuan Yan, you can stop.”
“Teacher, I haven’t finished…”
After admiring Ji Wenyan’s perfect solution, Yu Jun looked at Xuan Yan’s work and his face darkened. ‘With this level, she dares to challenge him? Audacious.’
Hearing she couldn’t continue, Xuan Yan panicked. ‘Why should I suffer just because he gave up? Just because he can’t do it doesn’t mean I can’t!’
“Ji Wenyan has solved it perfectly—concise, with no unnecessary steps. Textbook work!”
“Impossible! A slacker like him?”
“Ahem, Xuan Yan. I shouldn’t say this, but you made a mistake from the first step. Compared to your error, Ji Wenyan’s solution is excellent.”
Hearing her call him a slacker soured Yu Jun’s mood. ‘Finally finding such a rare talent, and she insults him?’ But he kept his tone polite.
Xuan Yan refused to believe it. She strode to Ji Wenyan’s blackboard and looked up at his answer.
One glance, and her face turned ugly.
It wasn’t that he solved it poorly—it was that his solution was too perfect.
