Early the next morning, Ji Wenyan woke up feeling refreshed and quickly washed up.

Although it was the weekend, he was going with Bai Mengze to pay respects at her parents’ graves, so sleeping in was out of the question.

Driver Uncle Li had already been informed: after breakfast, they would first take Bai Mengze to buy flowers, then drive directly to the cemetery.

Thinking about the day’s plans, Ji Wenyan finished getting ready and headed downstairs immediately.

To his surprise, Bai Mengze was already awake.

She had just returned from her morning run, radiating youthful energy that made Ji Wenyan deeply envious.

Remembering his last attempt at jogging, when even Old Yu from next door had outpaced him, Ji Wenyan quickly abandoned any thought of joining her—he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of her.

He couldn’t figure out why, despite never suffering any major illness or injury, he was simply incompatible with exercise.

Perhaps heaven was jealous of his excellence?

[System: After examination, it has been detected that the host suffers from a very rare recessive genetic disease. It usually doesn’t manifest, but the body tends to be weak and lacks strength, unable to engage in vigorous exercise, and there is a risk of shortening lifespan.]

[???]

[System: Without the system’s bond, the host would live to at most twenty-five years of age.]

[Wait, I’ve read plenty, you can’t fool me… I can tolerate your usual nonsense, but now you’re claiming I’m sick? And a genetic disease at that! My parents have no such issues!]

[System: This system never talks nonsense. As for your doubt, upon investigation, it’s a case of atavism.]

[…]

Listening to the system, Ji Wenyan decided not to argue further, dismissing it as the system’s joke.

Atavism indeed—no one in the Ji family had ever died young.

So he didn’t take the system’s words to heart. Instead, once Bai Mengze finished tidying up in her room, they ate breakfast quickly and then got into the car, heading to the flower shop.

Several flower shops were near the Ji residence. The driver parked in front of one, and Ji Wenyan and Bai Mengze got out.

“Welcome! Oh, Ji Wenyan, it’s been a while since you bought flowers!”

As Ji Wenyan opened the door, the bell hanging on the wall chimed.

A clear-faced girl of about seventeen or eighteen looked up, her face immediately breaking into a bright smile.

Clearly, she knew Ji Wenyan.

But when she spotted Bai Mengze beside him, the smile dimmed slightly.

A flicker of wariness appeared in her eyes.

“Mo Lu! I’ve been busy with school, so I haven’t had time to come. I brought my classmate to buy flowers today… Bai Mengze, what flowers do you want?”

Bai Mengze sensed the tension and glanced at Mo Lu, receiving a look that seemed to carry a warning.

Startled for a moment, Bai Mengze quickly understood.

It seemed Mo Lu had feelings for Ji Wenyan.

“I’d like a bouquet of lily of the valley.”

“Alright, please wait a moment.”

Oddly, the thought of another woman harboring feelings for Ji Wenyan left a sour taste in Bai Mengze’s heart.

Like a thorn lodged there.

She tried to suppress the discomfort. Mo Lu acknowledged the order and turned to prepare the bouquet, but kept glancing their way.

Whenever Ji Wenyan came home, he would always buy a bouquet for his mother.

That was how Mo Lu got to know him.

Over time, with Ji Wenyan’s handsome looks and family background, plus their similar ages, Mo Lu had fallen for him.

She’d wanted to ask if he had a girlfriend, but she figured someone as outstanding as him must already be in a relationship.

Maybe even dating multiple girls at once.

So she buried her feelings, telling no one.

Until a few days ago, she heard about Ji Wenyan’s car accident—how he nearly died but miraculously survived.

Though he was safe, the news had tormented her. Regret consumed her—why hadn’t she confessed earlier?

She’d been waiting.

What if he’d really left this world? Then her waiting would have been meaningless.

So she decided that the next time Ji Wenyan came, she would confess her feelings.

But she never expected… he would show up with another girl.

The intimacy between them was obvious—their relationship was clearly special!

Ji Wenyan had transferred to U City No.1 High School less than a week ago. How had he found a girlfriend so fast?

If only he’d transferred to No.3 High School instead, they’d have had more time together… Then she wouldn’t be in this situation now, with someone else snatching him away.

These thoughts made Mo Lu’s heart ache.

She was tempted to sabotage the bouquet, but the fear of getting caught stopped her.

Still, that girl was too beautiful; she definitely wasn’t the sincere type.

After Bai Mengze found another man and dumped Ji Wenyan, Mo Lu would comfort him and then confess.

Without even knowing Bai Mengze, Mo Lu, feeling her secret love was crushed, directed all her frustration at her.

In her mind, she imagined Bai Mengze leading a loose life and that their relationship wouldn’t last.

That thought eased her pain considerably.

“Bai Mengze, why did you choose lily of the valley?”

“My mother loved that flower. Its language is happiness, good fortune, and luck. She often told me that when my father proposed, instead of roses, he brought a huge bouquet of lily of the valley.”

While Mo Lu prepared the flowers, Ji Wenyan and Bai Mengze admired the display, breathing in the various scents, feeling relaxed and at ease.

When Ji Wenyan asked curiously, Bai Mengze answered with a smile.

Her parents’ meeting and romance had been very romantic, which made Bai Mengze dream that her own love story would be just as beautiful.

But her favorite flower wasn’t lily of the valley.

“I see. Then what’s your favorite flower?”

“Me? I like wisteria.”

Just then, after Ji Wenyan’s question, Bai Mengze thought for a moment and finally named the flower.

But she didn’t mention its flower language.

An infatuated, persistent, lingering love.
