Which reading system would you prefer for Pie Novels?

That can’t be right? Balian doesn’t look like a gay man.

Or could it be that Aurora is a lesbian?

Vapgis was startled by her own guess.

If Aurora were a lesbian, wouldn’t she be in danger?

Wait, no, that can’t be.

She’s known Aurora for so long, lived under the same roof, eaten her food and used her things, and never noticed anything off about Aurora.

Besides, from what Vapgis knew of Aurora, she wasn’t the type to keep secrets. If she liked girls, she would have made a move on Vapgis long ago.

The man isn’t gay, the woman isn’t a lesbian—it was hard to imagine how this pair of childhood friends, with more red flags than a stack of murder books, had ended up like this.

Whatever. It’s none of my business. I just need to earn my keep.

Vapgis decided to stop thinking and follow orders.

Aurora didn’t have Vapgis sleep in her bed. Instead, she had the servants set up a small cot.

Though the bed was makeshift, the blanket and sheets were Aurora’s spares, incredibly comfortable. As soon as Vapgis lay down, she couldn’t keep her eyes open, and she slept until dawn.

Nothing happened that night.

The next day, Aurora woke up a bit earlier than usual. She tiptoed to her desk, spread out her spellbook, and began her preparations.

She moved carefully, avoiding any sound.

After all, if Balian found out she was secretly preparing spells early in the morning, he would definitely get suspicious.

Cantrips, once memorized, were etched into the mind. Aurora currently knew four: Minor Illusion, Mage Hand, Ray of Frost, and Fire Bolt.

The most useful for today’s plan was Minor Illusion.

This spell could summon a magical cat to attract the attention of nearby people, which could be used to lure away the guards.

She could prepare up to four first-circle spells: Expeditious Retreat for enhanced mobility, Disguise Self for disguise, Feather Fall to survive jumping off a building, and Sleep to put people to sleep.

Second-circle spells: three slots. Invisibility, Misty Step, and Knock for opening locks.

Perfect.

Vapgis was still asleep. She rolled over, messing up the sheets and blanket, muttering in her sleep.

‘Steak, foie gras, cream of mushroom soup, salmon… I want to eat…’

Vapgis was lost in a hazy dream.

In her dream, she had entered the divine realm of some food god, with everything she craved but couldn’t have laid out before her.

‘Vapgis, what are you saying?’

‘Eat…’

Vapgis bit down hard.

Sweet? Soft?

Was it pudding?

“Ahhhh!! What the hell, why did you bite me?!”

No, it was Aurora’s hand.

Stung by the bite, Aurora slapped Vapgis on the head. The startled half-elf mage shot up like a spring, crashing into Aurora.

Vapgis opened her eyes to see Aurora’s disgusted face.

A tear of pain welled at the corner of Aurora’s eye as she clutched her hand and glared at Vapgis.

But that wasn’t important. Vapgis looked down.

Black lace, sheer—a high-cut one-piece like a competitive swimsuit.

Suddenly, she kind of understood Balian.

Even a woman could be attracted to this stunning body.

‘Whoa, she’s so beautiful!’

Unfortunately, their scuffle had made quite a bit of noise, and Balian had just finished his morning exercise and was heading back to his room.

—He heard the commotion and walked toward Aurora’s room.

Aurora quickly pushed Vapgis by the shoulders into the blanket and scrambled back into bed herself.

Footsteps approached, then stopped. Balian stood at the door for a moment.

Hearing no sound, he didn’t dare disturb the sleeping Aurora and went back to his room to change.

Aurora hurriedly pulled Vapgis over and told her to prepare her spells.

At 7 a.m., the maids of Marquis Olivia’s household knocked on the door as usual. Aurora woke the sleepy Vapgis, and they helped each other change.

Vapgis wore the same outfit but left off her cloak for ease of movement. Aurora dressed as she had on the day of the trial, but removed the headscarf and cross, leaving out all religious elements.

Then, the two headed to the dining room.

Breakfast was fried eggs and bacon, a small bowl of cream of mushroom soup, and French bread sticks.

Balian was already waiting in the dining room. He seemed in high spirits and practically sprang to his feet the moment he saw them.

In contrast, Aurora and Vapgis were a bit listless from waking up early.

Balian was dressed like a young noble: a leather jerkin, white breeches, ankle-high leather boots, a sword at his hip, and a flamboyant wide-brimmed hat with a feather on his head.

Balian looked very handsome today. So handsome that Aurora grew anxious.

“Good morning, Miss Aurora.”

Balian was like a border collie spotting a sheep.

“You look absolutely radiant today. Marquis Ed has gone to the palace; he instructed me to take you to get some new clothes. Also, I was thinking of having a sword made for you, and then…”

“My God, we’re going shopping, Balian. You need to have some common sense about shopping. Vapgis, tell him what shopping is all about.”

Vapgis stammered, “Uh, you should prepare two lightning spells to shock gang members?”

Aurora: “?”

Vapgis: “Uh, just kidding. I don’t know.”

Aurora said, “Exactly. I don’t know either. Shopping means wandering aimlessly, going wherever, doing whatever you see. Got it?”

“Oh, oh, I see.”

Balian felt a bit deflated but then perked up, vowing to study harder to ensure Aurora’s comfort.

“I’ll follow you, miss. Wherever you go, I go.”

This gave Aurora a sense of guilt for deceiving an innocent young man.

She’d made it up. She didn’t know what shopping was supposed to be either. In her past life, when she could go shopping, she wasn’t a woman.

She only said that to veto Balian’s pre-planned itinerary and create an opportunity to sneak away.

“You said you wanted to get a sword made. Where else would I go? First, we’ll go where you want, then where I want. Hurry up and eat; don’t waste time.”

Aurora said.

It turned out Balian really had no talent for taking girls shopping.

He drove the carriage with the two delicate beauties straight toward the Right Bank.

The city of Frania straddled a great river called the Virgin River. To the left were the royal palace, the cathedral, nobles’ mansions, and the University of Frania; to the right were the slums and the big market.

The Right Bank of the Virgin River was a rough, mixed area—no lush gardens or beautiful noble ladies.

—The guards at the bridge concluded that Balian must be crazy.

Fortunately, neither Aurora nor Vapgis were sheltered young ladies unaccustomed to the Right Bank’s ways.

Vapgis, a poor student, often came here to buy food.

Aurora had a boyish personality and frequently went out with her guards to “fight for justice.”

She often went to the Right Bank and even owned a bakery there.

Even so, Aurora still thought this whole thing was a bit crazy.

She ranted, “Balian, if you ever take another girl out, never mention you’re my guard.”

“I will never take any other girl out, miss! I swear to you!”

“Is that the point? When I get back, I’ll tell Dad you brought me to a blacksmith’s to watch them forge iron!”

As they bickered, they arrived at their destination.

A blacksmith’s shop.

That really is a great place for a date.
